Ward targets Nations Cup win over 'top side' Slovenia
Republic of Ireland manager Carla Ward says they will face a Slovenia team with an "abundance of quality" in Tuesday night's Nations Cup game in Koper.Slovenia beat Greece 2-1 in their League B Group 2 opener on Friday while the Republic of Ireland clinched a 1-0 win over Turkey in Dublin."Slovenia are a top side - their age groups are showing that. Every single age group is improving in their rankings," Ward told RTE Sport."The first team are no different. They're a good side, they've got players with Champions League experience. But if I'm honest I think this type of game will be better than the game against Turkey. "Why? Because you've got two teams who want to play football. There will be spaces that open up which naturally makes for a better game. It'll be a very different game but it will be a tough game because they've got an abundance of quality."Kyra Carusa scored the only goal as Ward began her reign as Republic of Ireland boss with victory over Turkey at Tallaght Stadium.However, Ward said after the match her team's display "wasn't pretty" and there was room for improvement."The system will never change with me - I have a very clear way of playing, the players can see that," Ward said on Monday."It's trying to continue getting those messages in, but we are going to try and look at something that will allow us to create more because we didn't create enough [against Turkey]."We looked at it - five shots in the first half, none in the second. That's an area that we've focused a lot of our work on the last couple of days, both on and off the pitch."

Their regular Champions League foes Real Madrid could lie in wait in the first knockout round. Other notable sides involved include newly-crowned European champions Paris St Germain and the beaten finalists Inter Milan, Premier League rivals Chelsea, Bayern Munich, Atletico Madrid and Borussia Dortmund. There are 12 European entrants in total with six from South America, six from South America, four each from Africa and Asia, five from North America and one from Oceania. Brazil has the most participants of any one country with four. The tournament, which begins on June 14, has had plenty of detractors, particularly from Europe, and its success remains to be seen. For City the message is now clear, however. They would rather be involved than not. 'It's an honour,' Guardiola said. 'It means in the last seasons we have done really well. It's a new competition for us and I'm looking forward to it.'

Frank departure 'way messier than it needed to be'
So the long drawn-out saga of Thomas Frank crossing London to join Tottenham from Brentford is thankfully has been a hard one to take for a number of reasons:losing one of our best-ever managers;the media frenzy and length of time this has taken;three of our backroom staff also me get one thing straight first of all.I have no problem with Frank wanting to take the chance to manage in the Champions League. His stock is high, the chance has come up now and may never have happened again. He had to do it and I totally understand that.I always said that if or when he left us, it would be to a really big club or to the Denmark national has been a brilliant manager for us and I will always be grateful for that. He has achieved so much, taking us into the Premier League and establishing us there, earning some famous wins over the big boys, bringing an amazing culture and unity to the club and having a real bond with us what I and other supporters are upset about is him taking the core of our backroom staff promoted internally when other managers like Uwe Rosler and Dean Smith left and Frank was one of the beneficiaries of that has probably stopped us doing that now and makes appointing a replacement much slower than know that owner Matthew Benham and director of football Phil Giles are brilliant operators and would have had a contingency plan and we trust them to get it can also still do well again next this whole episode has been way messier than it needed to more from Ian Westbrook at Beesotted podcast, external

Bryan Mbeumo threatens Man Utd transfer U-turn after holding fresh talks
Manchester United could receive another transfer blow following Thomas Frank's arrival at Tottenham with a deal for Bryan Mbeumo yet to be sewn up with Brentford Bryan Mbeumo has been the subject of discussions between Brentford and Tottenham - and the forward is now interested in a move to Spurs. Mbeumo had declared his desire to move to Manchester United earlier this month. The Red Devils have already seen a bid rejected for the Premier League star who bagged 20 goals in 2024/25. The Bees want a £60million fee for the Cameroon international with talk of United making an improved offer in excess of that figure mounting after their first failure. But now, the arrival of Thomas Frank at Tottenham as Ange Postecoglou's successor could tempt Mbeumo to change tact. Mbeumo is said to hold be more intrigued by a move across London following the appointment of Frank as head coach. Mirror Football exclusively reported that Frank told Spurs he wanted them to rival United for Mbeumo. The ex-Troyes ace would be able to play in the Champions League in north London, which could hand Tottenham a key advantage. Newcastle United saw a move for the much-wanted star rejected in January and appear to have not competed for his signature this summer such were Mbeumo's salary demands for United. It was suggested the attacker has been offered a salary that could reach £200,000-a-week. Mbeumo has a year left on his contract with an option for a further year, leaving the Bees in a healthy position to negotiate for the moment. Brentford have already received £10m from Spurs as compensation for Frank. The Dane's new side are said to only be willing to foot up £130,000-a-week with additional bonuses. But the draw of Frank and European football could yet prove crucial. Speaking about Mbeumo's future earlier this summer, Frank suggested top teams should be looking at the player given his successes last term. The 51-year-old also admitted it would only be fair for Brentford to receive a signficant fee. "It is clear that if he is to be sold, it must be for a nice, nice amount. It is a lot. Really a lot," he said. Then it is clear that it is impossible to replace him one for one. It cannot be done. There is a reason why he costs x number of million pounds, and we do not have x number of million pounds to buy for." He added: "I would say that I would be surprised if a lot of big clubs don't look at him. I would be surprised with what he has to offer. "How many wingers score 20 goals for a mid-table club? And then with seven assists plus his work ethic. And his character. All these things mean that he has a lot, so he is a good player.'
