How India Post found a money-spinner in Goa tourism
In north Goa, India's first such pick-up service on wheels for collection of consignments and parcels dispatched by international tourists has generated revenues of over Rs 24.73 lakh for the department of posts. The pilot project launched on January 14 had handled 594 international and 637 domestic consignments by the end of May.A senior official from India Post says international tourists who spend time in Goa choose to send clothes, handicrafts and other purchases back home using postal services. 'We send the van to their doorstep to collect the parcel and pack it,' he adds. The van has a crew of two—a driver and a booking staff. Every week, from Monday to Saturday, they follow a designated route that includes Candolim, Calangute, Anjuna, Morjim, Arambol and Assagao in north Goa.advertisementThough the service was initially meant to cover foreign tourists, the response was so encouraging that it was extended to domestic consignments as well.R.P. Patil, director, postal services, Goa region, says the response to the pilot project was good. A bulk of the foreign tourists who have used the initiative to send parcels abroad are from Russia, followed by those from countries like Israel and the United Kingdom. The department has kept the service running even after the tourist season ended in May because of the persisting demand at some collection points. International tourists usually stay in Goa from October to May.
Before launching the service, the authorities distributed pamphlets door-to-door to build awareness on the initiative. In an experimental run from April 24 to May 27, 2024, 58 parcels were picked up, including 25 international consignments, which brought in revenue of Rs 2.44 lakh, and 31 domestic parcels that generated revenue of Rs 23,969.advertisementThe officials also conducted a market survey with potential vendors, shopkeepers, packaging agents, resorts and small exporters. Marketing executives also visited offices, houses and shops of such customers before launching the pilot project.Patil adds that they plan to launch this service in south Goa, too, around October- November this year and had begun testing the waters. Officials say this could cover tourist spots like Colva, Benaulim and Palolem. In 2023, Goa saw 8.1 million domestic and 453,000 foreign tourists. The numbers went up to 9.94 million domestic tourists and around 468,000 international tourists in 2024. 'The state has witnessed a notable 21 per cent growth in tourism, which promises a very positive trend,' said the Economic Survey of Goa, 2024-25. 'While domestic tourist footfall increased by 22 per cent, foreign tourist footfall increased by 3 per cent. These statistics unmistakably indicate a robust growth in Goa's tourism sector, reaffirming its position as a most preferred tourist destination.'The department of tourism has said tourist arrivals in the first quarter of 2025 have grown by 10.5 per cent year on year as compared to the same period in 2024. The first three months of this year have seen 2.85 million visitors come to Goa, up from 2.58 million in the first quarter of 2024.advertisementSubscribe to India Today Magazine

2 yrs after issuing work orders, BMC completes 63% of road concretisation work in first phase
Two years after the road concretisation work began in Mumbai, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has been able to complete work of 203.36 km or 63 per cent of the total 320 km of roads that were taken up for concretisation in the first phase. The work order for the project was issued in January 2023 and till June 10, 2024, the BMC was able to achieve 9 per cent completion and in the last one year the civic officials have been able to achieve 54 per cent of progress rate — shows the BMC's data. The data shows that in the first phase, 700 roads having a total length of 320 km were taken for concretisation. Out of this, 343 roads which equalled 101.67 km were completed in entirety and 239 roads which equalled 101.68 km were completed partially. Owing to the ongoing monsoon season, civil works like concreting of roads could not be taken up and as a result the balance work after monsoon withdrawal begins post first week of October. The BMC had issued concretisation work in two phases at a total cost of Rs 17,700 crore. In the second phase, 1,421 roads having a total length of 378.36 km were taken for concretisation of which 139.38 km or 36.83 per cent have been completed so far. The BMC's data furthermore shows that out of the total roads that were taken up in the second phase, around 428 roads or 84.33 km were completed entirely while 375 roads having a total length of 55.06 km were completed partially in the second phase. During his budget speech in February, Municipal Commissioner Bhushan Gagrani had said that by March, 2026, BMC intends to finish 75 per cent of the total concretisation works taken in the first phase and 50 per cent of the work taken in the second phase. 'This time, the monsoon onset happened very early and keeping in mind our forecasts we had preponed the deadline for completing the concreting works to May 20 instead of continuing the work till the first week of June. Our objective was to make sure that the maximum number of roads that were taken up for concreting works stay in a motorable condition when monsoon breaks out,' an official told The Indian Express. The officials said that a key challenge on why it took two years to cross the halfway mark for the project is Mumbai's weather as during the rains, the soil also becomes loose. 'All the major utilities like electrical cables, telephone and fibre lines run beneath the road, therefore digging the roads during rains will expose them to water which may cause serious accidents. As a result, these factors pertaining to the monsoon season on the other hand have automatically pushed the start of work by five more months,' the official said.

Phase 1 of 37k cr Virar-Alibaug multimodal corridor approved
Mumbai: The cabinet on Tuesday approved the construction of the first phase of the 126.1km Virar-Alibaug multipurpose transport corridor on a build, operate and transfer (BOT) basis. Phase 1, comprising 96.4km, stretches from Navghar in Palghar district to Balavali in Pen taluka. Land acquisition for it can begin immediately. The project, which aims to halve the travel time between Virar and Alibaug, will be executed by MSRDC at a cost of Rs 37,013 crore. "The corridor will connect JNPT to the proposed Navi Mumbai international airport and MTHL," said an official, adding that it will be a key connector for multiple highways and will act as a shortcut between various areas of MMR and Goa. Sources said the project was to be built on a hybrid annuity model but owing to financial constraints, govt decided to build it on BOT basis to attract private investors. Officials said the plan for the corridor has been in the pipeline since 2011. MSRDC had awarded contracts for phase 1 to seven firms during the tenure of Eknath Shinde-led govt, but the tenders were later scrapped when the investment model changed. —Chaitanya Marpakwar
