How local airports deal with snowy conditions

PEORIA, Ill. (WMBD) — Snow impacts nearly every facet of our lives, and travel is no exception. For airport workers, clearing the runways and making sure planes are able to fly is paramount.
While the snow that came down this week in central Illinois wasn't as significant as first thought, it still required an all-day effort from airport workers.
Gene Olson is the Director of Airports for the Gen. Wayne A. Downing Peoria International Airport and said the swift response time is necessary.
'As soon as the snow starts to cover the markings on the pavement, we get out there and start working on it because the pavement markings tell things to pilots, and they have to be able to see that,' he said.
In terms of snow maintenance, Olson said the two main focal points are the pavement and the planes themselves.
He said taking care of the planes is complex, as factors such as what kind of precipitation is coming down, the temperature and the water content are all taken into account.
From there, a holdover time needs to be calculated quickly.
'From the time when they de-ice an aircraft, they only have a certain number of minutes based on those calculations to get that aircraft off the ground,' he said.
Once the plane is in the air, Olson said the heat from the engines plus the air compression makes it a lot easier to keep the ice off.
For the pavement, Olson said they can't use salt, as it can corrode the planes that are mostly made of aluminum.
Instead, they use a potassium acetate liquid to prevent ice. If ice and snow have already accumulated, Olson said they use sodium acetate pellets that can eat through the snow and ice.
When snow or freezing rain is falling, Olson said conditions are assessed at least once every hour. From there, they file a 'Notice to Air Missions,' or NOTAM, which goes out to a national network, so pilots know what to expect before they land.
Melissa Beaver is the Manager of Marketing and Communications at the Central Illinois Regional Airport in Bloomington, often shortened to CIRA.
She said similar things to Olson, mainly about how it's 'all hands on deck' from the time the snow starts, and that there's a checklist for maintenance items all day.
In terms of de-icing the planes and treating the pavement, it's roughly the same.
For passengers, Beaver said to be patient and stay in touch with the airport, as delays and cancellations may not be related to CIRA, but the destination airport.
For passengers, Olson said to be 'patient and flexible' when flying in inclement weather and to arrive early to avoid any potential trouble.
Something that has popped up recently, according to Olson, is people arriving later due to airlines notifying people of delayed plane arrivals.
'That can cause problems because the ticket counter might be closed when they get here. Think about whether you should adjust your arrival time based on that email. You might want to still get here in plenty of time,' he said.
Olson also recommends people join frequent flyer clubs, even if they don't fly a lot. He said they are 'great' for receiving information from airlines.

Peoria, Ill. (WMBD) — There's been a lot of chatter on social media about increasing chances for Derechos in the next few weeks across portions of the Midwest. These posts are lacking a bit of context so I hope to provide some of that here. A Derecho (deh-REY-cho) is a widespread, long-lived wind storm that is associated with a rapidly moving band of showers or thunderstorms. For severe straight line wind events to be classified as derechos they need to produce continuous damaging wind gusts over 58 mph, with at least 5 well separated reports of 74 mph, over a minimum distance of 248 miles. We're no stranger to derechos in Central Illinois as we are typically impacted by one Derecho a year. That said, not every Derecho is the same and some are more impactful than others. Here are some of the more memorable events in recent history… The 'Corn-belt Derecho of 2020' was the costliest thunderstorm event in modern U.S. history after producing 11.5 Billion dollars worth of damage. That event produced a 140 mph wind gust in Cedar Rapids, IA and at least 26 tornadoes across Iowa, Illinois, Wisconsin, and Indiana. This particular event battered areas along I-80 more than areas along I-74. More recently we had a derecho blast through Central Illinois on July 15th, 2024. Even though this derecho produced a measured wind gust of 105 mph near Speer, it was more known for the number of spin up tornadoes that occurred along the leading edge of the line. The storm produced at least 56 tornadoes across Iowa, Wisconsin, Illinois, and Indiana. 48 of those tornadoes occurred in Illinois which included a number of EF-1 Tornadoes moving through the Peoria Metro Area. As of June 6th, 2025 there are no derecho events in the immediate forecast. What many social media pages are posting as forecasts are simply climatological data that's not labeled as such. The month of June is peak severe weather season for the state of Illinois, and anytime storms are in the forecast, there's likely going to be some potential for severe weather. Most of those events won't be derechos. That said, 70% of all derechos happen between the months of May and August, so it wouldn't be all that surprising if we started to see more derecho events in the next few months, especially as we start to trend towards a more typical summer-like pattern. So, is there a high likelihood a derecho will occur somewhere across the Midwest through the end of July? CI Road Trip: Tremont Turkey Festival

TREMONT, Ill. (WMBD) — Chief Meteorologist Chris Yates was in Tremont on Friday for our CI Road Trip. Chris was visiting the Tremont Turkey Festival and was enjoying the food, including the strawberry shortcake. He said he is also looking forward to having a turkey leg. This is the festival's 59th year, with the theme 'Gobble and Groove' honoring the festival's history of live music. Chris talked to Miss Tremont, Ava Proehl, who said her favorite thing about the festival is the community and the businesses. 'I think it's amazing to promote small businesses and look at all the knick-knacky, small things that vendors sell,' Proehl said. The festival will run from June 6 to 8. With summer right around the corner, Gen Z vacationers have begun touting their travel tips. And among the top recommendations? 'Buy now, pay later' services like Klarna, Afterpay and Affirm. Those tools have slowly expanded across different platforms, giving consumers the option to schedule out incremental payments for practically anything: sneakers, burritos — and now, even airplane tickets. Advertisement For young, single or financially-limited Gen-Z travelers, covering airfare and other travel expenses with BNPL methods has become a popular — if concerning — trend. Many major airlines and hospitality groups have started to offer BNPL methods to travelers. By choosing to pay the entire fare in small installments, 'I still got to do the fun stuff I wanted to do in the time beforehand instead of the normal 'Oh, I spent $800 and now I have to lay low for a minute.'' Advertisement But Gen-Z's travel spending habits have become a frequent source of online outrage — take Coachella's shocking stats, for example. A post-2025 festival study conducted by Billboard found that more than 60% of concertgoers used BNPL options to finance their tickets, compared to a minuscule 18% when the choice first became available in 2009. While spending smaller increments of money may appear initially attractive to prospective travelers, experts advise against it, citing potential interest payments and credit repercussions as a result of constant loans. Advertisement 'The short answer is, don't do it,' Clint Henderson, a travel expert at The Points Guy, recently told NBC10 Boston. 'All the airlines offer some form of 'buy now, pay later' now, so they're all getting in on the act. You know, this is free money for them. 'You're much better off opening a credit card that's going to give you a statement credit and a big signup bonus,' Henderson added. If those tried-and-true signup bonuses and rewards aren't a big enough incentive to avoid the BNPL method, rest assured knowing that 2025 flight prices for summer travel are down 7% year-over-year, according to a Kayak report. Oftentimes, experts suggest, planning your vacations around destinations with significant deals can be the best way to cut travel costs. Getty Images Advertisement Henderson agrees on that front. 'This is the first time in about five years that prices are actually down year over year for the peak summer travel season,' he said. While Gen-Z may boast some occasional crafty tips and tricks to make navigating e-commerce a breeze, this 'buy now, pay later' bonanza is a serious no-no, according to experts. Instead, look to travel credit cards that offer rewards, like free miles or discounted hotel bookings, which benefit vacationers more in the long run. The Points Guy Director of Travel Content Eric Rosen previously shared another helpful travel tip with The Post: Tourists should 'garden their reservations' and check in weekly regarding arrangements for a flight or hotel. 'If that airfare drops between the time you book it and the time you fly, you can cancel it (depending on which type of ticket you have), rebook and save some of that money as a credit towards a future reservation,' Rosen explained.
