Bersatu didn't pay bureau chiefs, Muhyiddin's ex-aide tells court

KUALA LUMPUR : Bersatu did not pay individuals who led its internal bureaus, including its former legal head Haniff Khatri Abdulla, the High Court heard today.
Marzuki Mohamad, a former principal private secretary to party president Muhyiddin Yassin, said no payments were made to Haniff during the time he headed Bersatu's legal and constitutional bureau in the party's early years because that was the practice then.
'Two other lawyers also offered their services voluntarily. It was standard practice not to offer remuneration,' said Marzuki, who now lectures at a university.
He was testifying in a lawsuit filed by Haniff in 2021 to claim RM12.5 million in legal fees from Bersatu. Haniff also named Muhyiddin, deputy president Hamzah Zainudin and treasurer Salleh Bajuri as co-defendants.
Haniff alleged that he had issued multiple invoices between January and March 2021, but received no response.
Bersatu, in its defence, claimed that his services from 2016 to 2020 were offered pro bono.
Marzuki also told the court he had drafted the party's constitution and had sought Haniff's feedback, but claimed Haniff never responded.
Asked by Haniff's lawyer Nizamuddin Hamid whether he knew Haniff was never a party member, Marzuki said he never asked.
When questioned about Haniff's invoices and reminders, Marzuki said he had not seen them and only learnt of the lawsuit through media reports.
Justice Akhtar Tahir fixed Aug 25 for a decision after Bersatu's lawyer Chetan Jethwani confirmed that the defence had closed its case.

KUALA LUMPUR : The ringgit closed higher against the US dollar today, supported by a weaker greenback following downbeat US economic data, as investors shifted into risk-on mode. Bank Muamalat Malaysia Bhd chief economist Afzanizam Abdul Rashid said traders and investors were weighing the prospects of an economic slowdown and the risk of higher inflation stemming from recent tariff shocks. At 6pm, the local note stood at 4.2245/4.2295 against the greenback, strengthening from yesterday's close of 4.2435/4.2490 At the close, the ringgit traded mostly higher against a basket of major currencies. It slipped against the Japanese yen to 2.9495/2.9531 from yesterday's 2.9444/2.9486 but strengthened versus the euro to 4.8235/4.8292 from 4.8300/4.8362 and appreciated against the British pound to 5.7301/5.7369 from 5.7427/5.7502. The local currency also traded higher against most of its Asean peers. It appreciated versus the Singapore dollar to 3.2881/3.2922 from 3.2906/3.2951, advanced against the Indonesian rupiah to 259.3/259.8 from 260.4/260.8, and edged higher against the Philippine peso to 7.59/7.61 from 7.60/7.62. However, it fell against the Thai baht to 12.9925/13.0138 from 12.9679/12.9911.

Port of Tanjung Pelepas on record-breaking streak

KLIA Aerotrain back on track? Transport minister says media to get ‘first hand look' next week
SEPANG, June 5 — Transport Minister Anthony Loke today said he will provide an update next week on the progress of the new Aerotrain service at the Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA). He said the media will be given a tour of the upgraded train service before it goes into operation. 'We will invite you (the media) to KLIA next week to take a first-hand look,' Loke said after the groundbreaking ceremony of the Selangor Aero Park here. The KLIA Aerotrain service is slated to resume in the second quarter (Q2) of this year. Malaysia Airports Holdings Bhd (MAHB) Managing Director Datuk Mohd Izani Ghani previously said several technical aspects need to be resolved before the relaunch to ensure the system runs smoothly and complies with all safety requirements. The Aerotrain, a key component of KLIA's internal transport system since 1998, was suspended in March 2023 following a breakdown. The new Aerotrain system is expected to improve the passenger experience, reduce operational disruptions, and support the anticipated increase in air passenger traffic in the coming years. — Bernama
