Model of Banff Springs Hotel finds new home at Calgary business
A replica of the iconic Banff Springs Hotel has found a new home — although it won't be accepting reservations.

After being owned by the Calgary International Airport for several years, Calgarian Frank Kaufmann's model of the hotel has been relocated to another Calgary-based business.

Gary Hinton, with Falkbuilt, a manufacturer specializing in interior construction, noticed the model separated into pieces at a warehouse near their facility in southeast Calgary.

Falkbuilt found it, 'rescued it and displayed it for their own purpose,' said Kaufmann, 88, who was greeted by staff at Falkbuilt, including CEO Mogens Smed on Wednesday afternoon.

Hinton said, 'It's just great that that it didn't get destroyed . . . all the hard work and the effort that went in that Frank put into it.'

Kaufmann built the replica — which is around the size of a small car — beginning in the late 1970s, and finished it over three years.

Falkbuilt currently has it on display at one of its showrooms, and may move it to a more permanent location in the future.

Before the airport bought it in 2019, the model sat in Kaufmann's southwest Calgary garage for decades.

'I feel quite happy, because originally I wanted to dump it . . . I had nobody who was interested,' said Kaufmann, noting he had approached the Banff Springs Hotel and they were not interested in purchasing it.

His model-building journey has included replicas of buildings such as Calgary's historic City Hall, churches and his homes over the years — but his largest and most spectacular is the Banff Springs Hotel.

Kaufmann had difficulty mimicking the rock that lines the sides of the iconic hotel. He wound up using sand from a beach in Scheveningen, Holland.

'That beach, the beach sand, had exactly the color that I was looking for. I came across it accidentally,' said Kaufmann, adding he brought some on the plane ride home.

E3 Lithium Provides Progress Update for the Demonstration Facility

The skids are expected to arrive and be assembled on site in the Clearwater Project area over the next six to eight weeks. E3 Lithium has also received the sorbent for the DLE columns and completed the majority of the payments for this equipment. Article content Following arrival on site, the equipment will be assembled and undergo operational and safety checks, followed by final leak checks. Phase 1 will use brine hosted on site for the commissioning and operation of the 30-column system equipment to produce battery-grade lithium carbonate. It is expected that shortly after the drilling of the wells in Phase 2, the production well will be tied directly into the 30-column equipment and operate using a 'live' brine feed. As his new government enters its fifth week, Prime Minister Mark Carney continued to build out his inner circle Sunday, naming diplomat and lawyer Marc-André Blanchard as his chief of staff starting in July. In a statement posted to the social media platform X, Carney called Blanchard 'one of Canada's most accomplished builders, legal experts, executives, public servants, and diplomats.' Here's everything you need to know about the prime minister's new top aide. What is Blanchard's educational and professional background? Much like the prime minister he will serve, Blanchard graduated from some of the world's most elite universities; he holds degrees from the London School of Economics, Université de Montréal and Columbia University. Union Berlin forward Benedict Hollerbach is switching to Bundesliga rival Mainz
BERLIN (AP) — Union Berlin is losing its main attacking threat for next season after selling Benedict Hollerbach to Bundesliga rival Mainz. Hollerbach is leaving after playing 65 competitive games for Union, the Köpenick-based team said Sunday. Kicker magazine reported that Mainz was playing a fee of 10 million euros ($11.4 million) for the 23-year-old forward. Hollerbach was getting a four-year contract, Mainz said, to become the club's second signing of the offseason after young Austrian defender Konstantin Schopp joined from Sturm Graz the day before. Hollerbach scored 14 goals in 62 league games for Union, with nine of them coming last season to help the team stay in the Bundesliga for another year. The team's top scorer also set up four goals for teammates who mostly struggled to create openings without him on the field. 'Benedict continuously developed during his time with us and always gave his all for the club,' Union sporting director Horst Heldt said. Hollerbach joined Stuttgart in 2019 after five years with Bayern Munich, then joined third-division Wehen Wiesbaden, helping it to promotion in 2023.
