Trump to attend ‘Les Miserables' at revamped Kennedy Center, where sales have fallen

Months after orchestrating a conservative takeover of the Kennedy Center's leadership, President Donald Trump will attend "Les Miserables" on Wednesday, his first show at the performing arts facility that has become a symbol of U.S. cultural and political divides.
Trump did not attend events at the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts during his first term, but has taken a keen interest in it during his second. Deriding it on social media for putting on 'Drag Shows specifically targeting our youth,' he pushed out its former chairman, fired its longtime president and pledged to overhaul an institution he described as being in tremendous disrepair.
The fallout has been swift. The musical 'Hamilton' canceled plans to appear there, staff left and sales of subscriptions and individual tickets for Kennedy Center shows have dropped, according to two people briefed on the data.
Overall subscription revenue was down 36% to $2.8 million as of early June for next season, which begins in the autumn, according to one source. Theater subscriptions, normally a major revenue driver for the center, were down 82%.
A Kennedy Center spokeswoman declined to comment about the facility's sales. The center depends on revenue from tickets and subscriptions as well as donations to operate.
'President Trump cares deeply about American arts and culture, which is why he is revitalizing historic institutions like the Kennedy Center to their former greatness,' White House spokeswoman Anna Kelly said in a statement.
Trump's appearance at 'Les Miserables', a show about citizens rising up against their government, comes just days after he sent U.S. Marines and the National Guard to quell protests against his administration's immigration raids in Los Angeles.
Trump will sit in the presidential box overlooking center stage, but he is not guaranteed a friendly reception in the 2,300-seat theater. When Vice President JD Vance attended a Kennedy Center show with his wife earlier this year, the crowd booed.
Supportive donors will be present, but tickets for the musical were available for purchase by the public as well, along with regular subscribers. The night is sold out.
Trump's appearance is meant to juice fundraising. Donors who pay $100,000 to $2 million get to attend a reception before the show, receive a photo with the president and be seated in good locations in the theater. Vance is expected to attend as well.
The Kennedy Center is turning the event into one on par with its signature shows, including the Kennedy Center Honors, featuring a red carpet for high-profile guests with reporters and photographers in place.
Under the leadership of Ric Grenell, a close Trump ally and former ambassador to Germany, the Kennedy Center has sought to add more conservative-leaning programming, including a show that Grenell has described as a celebration of the birth of Christ.
Meanwhile, while Trump zeroed in on drag shows when he said the Kennedy Center had lost its way, multiple upcoming musicals include characters dressed in drag, such as 'Mrs. Doubtfire' and 'Chicago.'
Other musicals have pulled out, according to a former Kennedy Center official.

Image: Instagram True crime fans can prepare to delve into a harrowing chapter of legal mishaps and personal tragedy with the upcoming limited series, "The Twisted Tale of Amanda Knox". Disney+ recently announced that the eight-episode journey, inspired by one of the most controversial criminal cases in recent history, will premiere on Wednesday, August 20. The gripping story will follow Amanda Knox, an American student wrongfully accused of murdering her roommate Meredith Kercher in 2007 while they were studying abroad in Perugia, Italy. Twenty-one-year-old Kercher's body was found in her bedroom, partly undressed and with multiple stab wounds. She had been sexually assaulted. The series chronicles Knox's unsettling odyssey - from being sentenced to 26 years in prison alongside her boyfriend, Raffaele Sollecito due to inadequate circumstantial evidence, to navigating the Italian judicial system. Grace Van Patten, popular for her role in "Tell Me Lies", stars as Knox. Van Patten's portrayal promises to capture Knox's experience, from her wrongful conviction to her difficult fight for exoneration. Sharon Horgan will portray Knox's mother, Edda Mellas, with John Hoogenakker as Knox's father, Curt. Francesco Acquaroli takes up the role of the Italian prosecutor Giuliano Mignini, Giuseppe De Domenico will embody Raffaele Sollecito, Knox's then-boyfriend, while Roberta Mattei infuses the series with intensity as Monica Napoleoni, a fierce prosecutor's aide determined to see Knox and Sollecito convicted. "The Twisted Tale of Amanda Knox" will premiere on Wednesday, August 20 on Disney+. Image: Instagram The case captivated global audiences, highlighting issues of media influence and the legal injustices faced by those wrongfully accused. In an exclusive interview with "Us Weekly", Knox expressed her gratitude for the opportunity to retell her story. 'It really comes down to this idea of do I have a voice and does my voice matter in how a story is told? That is what Hulu has recognised,' Knox remarked. Meanwhile, in another online report, Meredith Kercher's sister, Stephanie Kercher said Meredith's 'strength and love remains strong after 17 years' and that she 'will forever hold a lasting legacy in friendship and kindness that no media can change'. Stephanie said her family had been through a lot and found it 'difficult to understand' how the series served any purpose. 'Meredith will always be remembered for her own fight for life, and yet in her absence, her love and personality continues to shine ... We will forever feel this indescribable void but we live by Meredith's standards with dignity.'

Kai Cenat and Drake to stream and collaborate on a music video

American streaming sensation Kai Cenat and Canadian rapper Drake will be on a live stream together on June 12. They will be reviewing submissions for a contest the pair hosted to find concepts for Drake's, Somebody Loves Me music video. Drake's latest album, $ome $exy $ongs 4 U , was created in collaboration with singer and songwriter PartyNextDoor. PartyNextDoor also happens to be the first artist Drake signed to his OVO Sound music label. The trap soul duo invited up-and-coming directors to pitch their best motifs and concepts for the video. The talent search, launched by Drake and PartyNextDoor, invited aspiring directors to pitch ideas for the video, with 20 winners receiving $15 000 each (267 424.50 ZAR) to bring their concepts to life. This whole thing first came to be when a sizeable portion of the live stream chat on Cenat's popular Twitch stream said they felt the last video Drake released was subpar. The rapper then insisted they direct his next one. The 20 chosen creators will contribute a short clip ranging between 30 seconds to a minute each. These will be stitched together and curated by Cenat and his collective Any Means Possible (AMP). Submissions for the contest closed on May 24, with both Cenat and Drake raving about some entries and critiquing others. The rise of social media has meshed with the music industry, with TikTok challenges garnering artists critical acclaim in this era. A slightly more artful approach has been what streamers and YouTubers have been able to cultivate. Drake has been making a point of joining streamers for sessions and locally we have even seen rappers like Cassper Nyovest and Nasty C embrace Twitch. None more so than Cenat. He has become somewhat of an authority on newer music tastes because of his widely enjoyed reviews. This collaboration surprises fans. Cenat was unexpectedly mentioned in Drake's lawsuit against Universal Music Group involving his globally recognised defeat to Kendrick Lamar, last year. So far, the mood between the two appears to be amicable. Let us know by leaving a comment below, or send a WhatsApp to 060 011 021 11.
