Sentence suspension in £190m case: IHC grants 7-day to NAB for appointing special prosecutor in IK, Bushra's pleas
ISLAMABAD: The Islamabad High Court (IHC) granted seven days to the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) for appointing special prosecutor in Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) founder Imran Khan and his spouse Bushra Bibi's appeals seeking suspension of their sentence in £190 million case.
A two-member bench comprising Acting Chief Justice Sardar Sarfraz Dogar and Justice Muhammad Asif, on Thursday, heard the case and adjourned the hearing until June 11, when the NAB told the court that it needed time to prepare arguments for the case.
During the hearing, Barrister Salman Safdar, representing the Imran Khan and Bushra Bibi argued that the petitions for suspension of the sentence were heard, after much prayers and supplications, adding that today's date has not been given easily.
NAB Prosecutor Rafay Maqsood appeared before the court and said that his request is that the federal government had to appoint a special prosecutor in this case but he has not been appointed yet.
Rafay prayed the court to grant four week, stating that they had received the notice yesterday. The acting chief justice said for issuing notification for the prosecution team seven days are enough.
Salman Safdar contended that more than 300 cases have been filed against the founder of PTI and the trial court sentenced him. Lawyer Latif Khosa said 'the PTI founder is in jail without any evidence; the PTI founder neither will go abroad nor is there any risk of tampering with the record.'
The court directed the NAB prosecution team to notify the special prosecutor within seven days and adjourned the hearing until June 11.
In this matter, founder PTI Imran Khan and his spouse Bushra Bibi approached the IHC seeking suspension of their sentences in the £190 million case.
They moved the court through their counsel Barrister Salman Safdar and cited the state and the chairman NAB as respondents.
Counsel Salman stated in petition that the petitioners were convicted by the Accountability Court (I) Islamabad through judgment dated 17.01.2025, wherein, they were held guilty for commission of offence of corruption and corrupt practices as defined u/s 9(a)(ii)(iv)(vi) of the National Accountability Ordinance, 1999 and Imran was sentenced u/s 10(a) of the National Accountability Ordinance, 1999 to undergo rigorous imprisonment (RI) for 14 years and fine amounting to Rs1,000,000.
Through the instant petition, they sought indulgence of this court for 'Suspension' of conviction and sentence awarded to them, till the final disposal of the main appeal already filed in the IHC.

Sindh bans 4-seater rickshaws; amends vehicle registration rules
Sindh government on Friday approved a ban on four-seater rickshaws and online as well as on the counter sale of tinted windows, police lights, and sirens. The meeting chaired by Home Minister Ziaul Hassan Lanjar discussed amendments to the Motor Vehicles Rules also approved outsourcing the motor vehicle fitness check. IGP Sindh, and secretaries of law, transport and mass transit, excise and taxation, along with the DIG traffic were present in the meeting. They approved mandatory fitness certification for commercial and non-commercial vehicles, It was decided that a draft would be prepared and submitted to the government for approval and ratification of the amendments. Participants approved a complete ban on four-seater rickshaws, and decided to make it mandatory for water tankers and dumpers to install trackers and sensors. Minister Lanjar stated that third party services will be engaged to issue fitness certificates to commercial and non-commercial vehicles, with formal Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) signed with them. Violation fines were also approved, including Rs200,000 fined for wrong-way driving of government vehicles, Rs25,000 for motorcyclists driving against traffic, and Rs100,000 for four-wheelers violating one-way rules. Motorcyclists driving without a license are to be fined Rs25,000, while car drivers are to be fined Rs50,000 for the violation. Meanwhile, first-time offenders of one-wheeling or drifting are to be fined Rs100,000, increasing to Rs200,000 and Rs300,000 for repeat offenses. Minister Lanjar also approved the installation of at least five cameras in heavy/load-carrying vehicles. Additionally, e-challans for traffic violations will be delivered to vehicle owners' registered home addresses, and vehicles with unpaid fines will not be approved for sale or transfer. The minister further stated that the traffic, transport, and excise systems will now be interlinked and operated online, while a dedicated Traffic Magistrate will be appointed to handle traffic law violation cases. Excise Minister Mukesh Kumar Chawala assured the department's full support in enforcing traffic regulations and emphasised that no registration or route permit will be issued to four-seater or larger rickshaws, and a crackdown will be launched against any such vehicles on the roads. He further stated that all organisational steps to establish the vehicle fitness service structure will be completed promptly, after which strict enforcement of fitness requirements will follow.

Five AVLC cops held for kidnapping
Malir Cantt police raided the Anti-Vehicle Lifting Cell (AVLC) office in Khawaja Ajmer Nagri, rescuing an abductee and arresting five AVLC personnel, including a sub-inspector. Reportedly, the victim, Madad Ali, had gone missing from near his residence in Bilawal Jokhio Goth. After failing to locate him, his family registered a complaint at the police station. Then, acting on intelligence, police raided the AVLC office and recovered Madad Ali, who had been detained on the station's rooftop for three days. The arrested personnel were identified as Constables Abdul Ghaffar, Riyaz, Khalid, Naeem, and Sub-Inspector Rashid Ali. They allegedly demanded a ransom of Rs500,000 from the victim's family for his release. Another individual reportedly involved was also taken into custody. During interrogation, the officers confessed to keeping the victim in illegal detention and attempting to extort ransom money. Further investigations are ongoing.

PFA launches crackdown ahead of Eid
LAHORE: An enforcement team of the Punjab Food Authority on Friday carried out a grand operation against the adulteration mafia in the Karol Ghati area and seized a large quantity of counterfeit cold drinks. The food safety teams discarded 180 litres of fake cold drinks and confiscated prohibited substances being used to manufacture spurious beverages. An FIR has been lodged against the unit. Director General Asim Javaid said that the food safety team recovered 3,900 ready-to-sell fake cold drink bottles, 250kg sweetener, 4,000 empty bottles, 60kg bottle caps, 200kg labels, chemicals, filling machines, gas cylinders, and drums. In a separate action, the teams inspected 14 food points near Multan Road, Daewoo and Jinnah Terminals. Three food outlets were fined a total of Rs245,000 for violations of food safety regulations. The DG said that banned and hazardous chemicals were being used to replicate well-known cold drink brands. All stock prepared for Eid supply was destroyed. He added that the violators failed to produce valid medical and training certificates for workers, while the premises were found unhygienic and insect-infested. He warned that consumption of fake beverages could cause severe stomach, liver, and kidney issues. He said the PFA has adopted a zero-tolerance policy against hazardous and substandard food products.
