Mass prison break in Pak after quakes trigger chaos
Karachi: Over 200 prisoners escaped in the southern Pakistani city of Karachi late on Monday after they were permitted to leave their cells following a series of earthquake tremors, local officials and police said.
Hundreds of prisoners were allowed into the courtyard of the jail due to the tremors, Zia-ul-Hasan Lanjar, the provincial law minister, told reporters at the scene.
"There was panic here because of earthquake tremors," said Lanjar, adding that it was hard to control a throng of up to 1,000 people. The jailbreak began just before midnight on Monday and carried on till the early hours of Tuesday, he said.
Police said the prisoners snatched guns from prison staff, leading to a shootout, and then forced open the main gate.

The SP further clarified that illegal transportation of animals will not be tolerated. 'We are strictly implementing the directives of the High Court regarding cow slaughter. Any violation of these orders will lead to severe consequences,' he stated. He also mentioned that nodal officers have been instructed to promptly respond to complaints and enforce the Andhra Pradesh Prohibition of Cow Slaughter and Animal Preservation Act-1977, Animal Transport Rules-1978, The Animal Transport (Amendment) Rules-2001 and Slaughter House Rules-2001. Citizens are encouraged to report any information related to cow slaughter or illegal transport of cattle by calling 112. The identity of informants will be kept strictly confidential, the SP assured.

Bangladesh CA Mohd Yunus announces national elections in April 2026
Dhaka, June 6 (UNI) Bangladesh Interim Government Chief Advisor Muhammad Yunus today announced that the much-awaited next national election will take place in the first half of April 2026. In a televised address to the nation on the eve of Eid-ul-Azha, he said that the Election Commission will provide a detailed roadmap for the elections in due course, the Daily Star reported. He said the interim government took office based on the three main mandates of having reform, justice and elections. "In that regard, I believe that by the next Eid-ul-Fitr, we will be able to reach an acceptable point on reform and justice. Especially, all will be able to see visible progress on the trial of crimes against humanity – which is the government's collective responsibility towards the martyrs of the July mass uprising," he said. "The government has held discussions with all parties to organise the most free, fair, competitive and acceptable elections in history. In addition, after reviewing the ongoing reform activities related to justice, reform and elections, I am announcing to the people of the country today that the next national elections will be held on a day in the first half of April 2026," Yunus said. This is a major development in the context of Bangladesh's politics after the fall of the Sheikh Hasina-led Awami League government in August 2024. Yunus, on several occasions during the past few months, has said that the next elections will take place between December 2025 and June 2026, based on the extent of refroms. However, BNP and like minded parties have been demanding that the election takes place by December this year. National Citizen Party, the newly formed political party comprised of July uprising leaders, have been pushing for the election to be held after the reforms are completed. Jamaat-e-Islami intially had a similar stance to the NCP. The party then said the election can take place in February, before Ramadan. Last week, top Jamaat leaders said the election can take place between December and April. Chief of Army Staff General Waker-Uz-Zaman, on May 21, said the national election should be held by December this year. "Bangladesh needs political stability. This is only possible through an elected government, not by unelected decision-makers," one source quoted the army chief as saying in an Officers' Address. Yunus, in his address to the nation today, also said the government wants an election that will satisfy the souls of the martyrs of the mass uprising. "We want the largest number of voters, the largest number of candidates and parties to participate in the next election. Let it be remembered by the nation as the most free, fair and impartial election", he hoped. Yunus also urged people to extract specific promises from the political parties that they will never, under any circumstances, violate the people's democratic rights and human dignity. He also reminded the people of the country that this election is not just about peaceful elections. It is an election to build a 'New Bangladesh', the aspiration of the students and the masses. Train links are a welcome now release prisoners on Eid to reduce Dil Ki Doori: Mirwaiz to Modi
ANI Hurriyat leader Mirwaiz Umar Farooq Srinagar: Hurriyat leader Mirwaiz Umar Farooq on Friday said that if the Prime Minister truly seeks to reduce the 'Dil Ki Doori' then humanitarian steps like release of prisoners need to be taken immediately. Mirwaiz while addressing a Friday gathering here at historic Jama Masjid in downtown Srinagar said that train links are a welcome, but it is the human links that truly matter and endure. On the eve of Eid-ul-Adha, Mirwaiz said that for thousands of families in J&K, the festival brings no joy. 'Their sons, husbands, fathers and brothers have been incarcerated for years—many without trial—in jails within and outside J&K. And each passing day, more of our youth are detained,' said Mirwaiz. The Hurriyat chief said that all such prisoners, including political leadership, remain in the prayers and thoughts of the people. Mirwaiz urged Government of India that a goodwill gesture be made on the occasion of Eid, by releasing these prisoners. 'If the Prime Minister truly seeks to reduce the 'dil ki doori' (distance of hearts) which he often mentions in his speeches, then such humanitarian steps are the real way forward. Train links are welcome, but it is the human links that truly matter and endure," said Mirwaiz. The Hurriyat leader also condemned the tragic and inhuman killing of 30-year-old Zubair Bhat of Ali Kadal, Srinagar, who was working in New Delhi. "The incident is deeply disturbing and unacceptable. Zubair's custodial-like death—allegedly at the hands of Delhi police as claimed by his family—has brought back haunting memories of such deaths and raised serious concerns regarding the safety and security of Kashmiris residing or working in different parts of India," said Mirwaiz. The Hurriyat leader said that the killing has sent shockwaves through the community and added to the prevailing fear and anxiety among the thousands of Kashmiri students, professionals, traders, and labourers living outside J&K. 'After the recent Pahalgam incident, Kashmiris across the country are increasingly facing hostility. And now, an innocent young trader has been killed in cold blood. How long will this go on?' Mirwaiz asked. The Hurriyat leader urged the Government of India and the Union Territory administration to fulfill their constitutional responsibility and ensure the safety, security, and dignity of all Kashmiri citizens, especially those outside the region. 'The silence and inaction only embolden those targeting Kashmiris,' he also made a heartfelt appeal to civil rights organisations, writers, intellectuals, and conscientious citizens of India to raise their voice against "the growing onslaught on Kashmiris and to stand up in solidarity with the victims of such brutality."
