Man arrested in Bani Gala for online hate campaign after Jaffer Express incident

Express Tribune17-03-2025

The Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) Cyber Crime Circle has arrested a suspect accused of running a hate campaign against state institutions following the Jaffar Express attack.
The suspect, identified as Haider Saeed, was apprehended in a raid conducted in the capital city's Bani Gala area, Express News reported.
According to the FIA spokesperson, Saeed was found sharing derogatory material targeting state institutions during the Jaffar Express attack.
Additionally, the suspect was involved in promoting banned terrorist organisations on social media, sharing inflammatory content in support of these groups.
The FIA stated that the suspect was not only spreading anti-state propaganda but was also posting provocative statements in favour of extremists. The agency has seized the suspect's social media accounts and digital evidence for further investigation.
The FIA has vowed to take strict legal action against the accused in accordance with the law.
Jaffar Express, with over 400 passengers on board in nine bogies, was on its way from Quetta to Peshawar when it came under attack in the Dhadar area of Bolan Pass on Tuesday, according to security sources.
It all started after armed gunmen forced the train to a halt in a remote, mountainous area of the province on Tuesday afternoon, with the assault immediately claimed by the banned Baloch Liberation Army (BLA), a terrorist group behind rising violence in the province.
The attackers bombed the railway track before storming aboard the train, said the security forces.
Sources indicated that the railway tracks had been destroyed with explosives, causing the train to stop, after which firing began, resulting in the death of the driver and several passengers.
Railway authorities stated that mobile networks were not working in the area where the train was located, causing difficulties in communication..
After the terrorist attack on the Jaffar Express, Indian and anti-national social media platforms started to actively spread misleading information and false propaganda.
According to sources, propaganda and fake news are being spread through old videos, AI-generated videos, outdated images, fake WhatsApp messages, and posters in an attempt to incite hysteria.
Sources indicate that a malicious social media campaign is attempting to create panic among the public. Social media accounts linked to terrorists are also working with Indian media to spread anti-Pakistan rhetoric.
Security sources stated that Indian media is misleading the public by broadcasting analyses from self-exiled Baloch leaders sitting outside Pakistan. People are being misled, and the public is advised to rely on credible sources of information rather than the misleading and fabricated propaganda spread on social media.

ATC issues arrest warrants of PTI workers

ISLAMABAD: The Anti-Terrorism Court (ATC) on Friday issued arrest warrants for the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) workers who did not appear before it in cases registered against them in connection with the November 26 cases. ATC judge Tahir Abbas Sipra, while hearing the cases, marked the attendance of workers who attended the hearing and adjourned the case registered at Aabpara police station until July 15 and Sangjani till July 14. The court expressed annoyance over the accused that failed to appear before the court and issued their arrest warrant. The court directed the police to arrest the accused and produce them before the court. PTI lawyer Sardar Masroof and Ayesha Khalid appeared before the court. Meanwhile, another court sent Chinese nationals allegedly involved to jail in a case registered against them in connection with online fraud. Police have produced eight nationals before judicial magistrate Abbas Shah, after completion of their physical remand. During the court proceedings, the prosecutor told the court that the accused had defrauded hundreds of citizens through online scams. The suspects had established offices in Pakistan to carry out their activities, yet nothing was registered in their own names—indicating an attempt to avoid legal accountability, he further said. The Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) had registered a case against the Chinese nationals. Copyright Business Recorder, 2025

EPBD's BoG rejects granting FBR excessive powers

ISLAMABAD: The Economic Policy and Business Development (EPBD) Board of Governors categorically rejected the draconian amendments introduced in the Budget that grant the Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) unprecedented and excessive powers over the business community. These measures represent a fundamental assault on business rights and economic freedom that no business organisation can tolerate. It also goes fundamentally against the government's policy of promoting Ease of Doing Business in Pakistan, the board observed. The budget transforms the FBR into an enforcement agency, with powers that threaten the foundation of Pakistan's business environment. Under the Anti-Money Laundering Act, 2010, FBR's Directorate General of Intelligence and Risk Management-Customs now operates with police-like authority, treating every businessman as a potential criminal rather than a contributor to the national economy. The mandatory e-bilty system under Section 83C imposes comprehensive digital surveillance on all business transactions. With penalties reaching Rs1 million, goods confiscation, and six-month imprisonment for non-compliance, this system creates a climate of fear that will cripple legitimate business operations. Most alarmingly, the Finance Bill 2025 grants FBR officers dangerous and excessive powers that have no place in a modern democracy: Section 37AA authorises arrest without warrant based on mere suspicion of tax fraud—a power that invites abuse and harassment; Section 14AE allows arbitrary seizure of business premises and property without adequate safeguards; Section 37B permits 14-day detention of businesspersons, extendable through magistrates; Section 11E enables tax assessment and recovery based on suspicion alone, without proper investigation; Section 33 (13 and 13A) introduces 10-year prison terms and Rs10 million fines for broadly defined "tax fraud" that could criminalise routine business errors; Section 32B empowers private auditors with quasi-legal authority over businesses. These provisions create a surveillance state where businesses operate under the constant threat of arbitrary action. This is not tax policy—this is systematic harassment institutionalised by law. While burdening businesses with these oppressive measures, the budget offers absolutely zero incentives for industrial growth or investment. With interest rates at 11 per cent - the highest in the region - businesses are already fighting for survival. Industrial closures, flight of capital, and unprecedented unemployment. This demands urgent relief to the business community, not additional persecution. The effective tax burden on Pakistani businesses has reached a breaking point. Corporate income tax at 25 per cent, combined with 25 per cent dividend tax, creates a 50 per cent burden before accounting for super tax, minimum turnover tax, withholding taxes, sales tax, and import duties. The total effective tax rate of 50-60 per cent makes Pakistan one of the most punitive business environments regionally, driving away investment and destroying job creation. The EPBT also expressed its resolve that with the inflations having been brought down to 4.5 per cent, the policy rate must not exceed six per cent. This will not only make the struggling businesses viable, but also create enough fiscal space to double the vital expenditures, as compared to last year on education and health, rather than reducing them, as has been proposed in this budget. The government is advised to use the monetary policy as a tool to kick-start the economy and not to throttle it. The EPBD issues ultimatum: If these provisions remain in the Finance Bill 2025, the business community will, unfortunately, have no choice but to cease operations in Pakistan. It is not difficult to appreciate that the tax-paying business community will find it difficult to participate in an economy that criminalises business activity and treats entrepreneurs as suspects. Pakistan's economy cannot survive without its business community. The proposed policy measures will make it impossible for law abiding businesses to survive in Pakistan. If the government believes it can collect taxes without taxpayers, it can try. If FBR thinks it can run the economy without businesses, let them do so. The EPBT demanded immediate actions by the government including; complete withdrawal of all arbitrary enforcement powers granted to FBR, reduction of interest rates to six per cent to provide relief to struggling businesses, elimination of the punitive tax structure that penalises compliant businesses, introduction of genuine pro-business policies that encourage investment and growth. FPCCI slams 18pc tax on e-commerce transactions, solar panels

KARACHI: Vice President of Federation of Pakistan Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FPCCI) Muhammad Amaan Paracha has said that the federal budget for the new fiscal year does not align with the expectations of the trade, industry, and the general public. He criticised the imposition of taxes on e-commerce transactions, saying it is an unjust move. 'Unemployed youth were earning through e-commerce, and this step will stifle their potential,' he said. Expressing serious concern over the 18% tax imposed on solar panels, Paracha said the government has retrieved Rs 3 trillion through the termination of Independent Power Producer (IPP) agreements — a positive move for the power sector. However, instead of formulating an effective alternative energy policy, the government has imposed 18% sales tax on solar panels. This has already caused a spike in solar panel prices in the market. 'The entire business community unanimously demands the immediate withdrawal of this sales tax,' he added. 'We had hoped for relief to help the industry stabilize, but even the agricultural sector received no support, and the government turned a blind eye to education, offering no relief,' Paracha stated. He further pointed out that the federal budget for 2025–26 contains over 40% anomalies that the government must address. The industrial sector had expected the budget to be business-friendly and in the public interest, but instead, it has led to deep disappointment. Due to rising electricity prices, industrial production costs are already extremely high, and taxing solar panels will deprive industries of cheap energy options — effectively forcing them to buy expensive electricity, which is unfair. Paracha acknowledged that given the current post-Pakistan-India war scenario, an increase in the defense budget was inevitable. He cited the regional situation, recent surge in terrorism, India's water aggression, and non-traditional threats as reasons to prioritize national security. A 21% increase in the defense budget, allocating Rs 2,550 billion, was a necessary and vital step, he said. He also urged the SBP governor to reduce the interest rate by 3% in the monetary policy scheduled to be announced on Monday. Copyright Business Recorder, 2025
