PA again passes disputed bills amid ruckus
KARACHI:
The treassury benches in Sindh Assembly, in a turbulent session on Monday, re-approved the Sindh Universities Amendment Bill 2025 and the Sindh Civil Courts Amendment Bill (Revised). Governor Kamran Tessori had refused to sign the controversial laws and returned the bills with notes of objections.
Approving the disapproved bills ignited a powder keg in the house. The opposition members, led by MQM-P, staged a strong protest, tore the copies of the bills and raised slogans of 'black law, rejected, rejected'.
Minister for Law and Parliamentary Affairs Ziaul Hassan Lanjar presented the Sindh Universities Amendment Bill 2025 and the Sindh Civil Courts Amendment Bill (Revised) separately for approval in the session chaired by the Deputy Speaker Naveed Anthony.
The protesting members surrounded the speaker's dais and chanted slogans against the two laws.
On this occasion, Sharjeel Inam Memon, speaking on one of his points of order, said that the behaviour of the opposition today was condemnable. MQM-P and PTI have joined hands. Now they have an alliance and today's ruckus in the House is the result of the alliance. He said that the uninvited guests in this House should be ashamed. Sharjeel severely criticised the opposition and said that none of the people who protested today even bothered to have read the bill.
In the future, any capable person can be appointed as the Vice Chancellor of a university. The commotion on the part of the opposition was a childish act. The opposition members also walked out of the House after their protest.
During its proceedings, the Sindh Assembly also unanimously passed a resolution to pay homage to the great Sufi saint of Sindh, Hazrat Lal Shahbaz Qalandar. This resolution was presented in the house by PPP member Shazia Singhar. Later, the assembly session was adjourned.
Minister vows to combat drug
Sindh Excise Narcotics Control Minister Mukesh Kumar Chawla urged members of the provincial Assembly to identify drug dealers and trafficking dens in their respective constituencies, assuring that action will be taken against them.
Most rehab centres for drug addicts are being run by the Sindh government itself, Chawla said. He expressed these views while answering various written and supplementary questions from members during the Question and Answer Session on the Excise, Narcotics, and Taxation Department in the Sindh Assembly.
Members of the Sindh Assembly expressed concern over the rising incidence of drug abuse in Sindh. Mukesh Chawla challenged the members to identify drug trafficking dens and assured strict action against them.
PTI member Sajjad Soomro said that a rehabilitation centre has been established in Lyari, but drug trafficking dens are operating openly in the area. The Excise Minister invited Soomro to visit Lyari with him to identify the spots where drugs are being sold. Kumar stated that the provincial government will not hesitate to take action against elements involved in drug trafficking.

Speaking on India's intentions, he responded to a question saying that the Modi government is following the RSS's extremist agenda and is hostile toward both Pakistan and Muslims. He added that while the military has fulfilled its duties, it is now the responsibility of the political leadership to unite for national development. He confirmed that these elections will be held on a party basis. Sanaullah also said that the Punjab government is working on welfare schemes such as the Kisan Card, Mazdoor Card, and Mazoor Card to improve the quality of life for ordinary citizens. He concluded by noting that major national projects, including Pakistan's nuclear tests, were completed during PML-N's tenure, and that Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz is now stepping forward with a new vision of public service.

TSX set for record high after US jobs data, trade optimism
Canada's main stock index was headed for a record high on Friday, as a better-than-expected U.S. jobs report and signs of easing trade tensions between Washington and China fueled investor optimism. The Toronto Stock Exchange's S&P/TSX composite index was up 0.6% at 26,486.37 points. The index was set to eclipse Tuesday's record closing high of 26,426.64 if gains hold. U.S. nonfarm payrolls rose by 139,000 jobs last month, data released on Friday showed, while economists polled by Reuters had expected a job growth of 130,000. Meanwhile, White House trade adviser Peter Navarro said on Friday that a planned meeting between U.S. and Chinese officials on trade is expected within seven days, giving hope that the trade war between the world's two largest economies might de-escalate. Separately, China on Friday called to improve bilateral ties with Canada. Earlier this week, U.S. President Donald Trump had doubled tariffs on imports on steel and aluminum. TSX edges higher amid US-China trade talks and upcoming jobs data 'It's just a ploy to get everyone to the table and to try to make a deal,' said Michael Constantino, CEO of online investment platform Webull Canada. Canada's Industry Minister Melanie Joly said on Thursday that Prime Minister Mark Carney and Trump are in direct communication as part of Ottawa's bid to persuade Washington to lift tariffs. PTI activists protest outside SHC, brave police brutality
During the hearing for Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Patron-in-Chief Imran Khan's bail plea in the Al-Qadir Trust case, PTI leaders and workers staged a protest outside the Sindh High Court (SHC) under the leadership of PTI Sindh President Haleem Adil Sheikh. The protesters demanded the release of Imran Khan, Bushra Bibi, and other PTI leaders in custody, along with their acquittal in the false cases filed against them. During the peaceful demonstration, a police contingent attempted to arrest Haleem Adil Sheikh and other leaders. However, PTI lawyers intervened, and escorted Sheikh and the others into the court premises. Haleem Adil Sheikh stated, "our protest was peaceful, yet the police resorted to brutality and violence, which we will challenge in court. A civilian dictatorship has been established in Sindh, and martial law has been imposed across the country." Sheikh further said that Imran Khan has remained falsely imprisoned for over 600 days, stating, "the 26th Constitutional Amendment has resulted in a massacre of justice, and the judiciary has been weakened." Regarding the Al-Qadir Trust case, Sheikh asserted that Imran Khan is not a beneficiary and has committed no corruption, and instead "the real corruption was committed by Asif Ali Zardari and others, who purchased flats in London using stolen money, with the Sharif family as the beneficiaries. Imran Khan, on the other hand, established Al-Qadir University for religious education."
