Measles and rubella vaccination campaign protects children in Lunda Norte

Maria da Graça, who lives in the municipality of Chitato, remembers with sadness one of the most difficult moments in her life. In 2024, her eldest daughter, then four years old, fell ill with measles. "It started with a fever, then the spots appeared. She became very weak. I was afraid I was going to lose her," says Maria, her eyes watering. Although her daughter survived, the disease left deep scars and a fear that never left her.
Maria's story is shared by many families in Chitato, Dundo and Mussungue, the three municipalities that recorded more than 200 cases of measles between November 2024 and March 2025. Most of those affected were children under the age of five, the group most vulnerable to the disease.
"Measles is highly contagious and dangerous. It can cause serious complications such as pneumonia, diarrhea, blindness and even lead to death," explains Augusto Muachissaco, Chitato's municipal health director. "Children between the ages of six months and four years are the most vulnerable. If we don't act now, cases will continue to rise and more lives will be at risk."
To contain the spread of the disease and protect children, the health authorities in Lunda Norte, with technical and logistical support from The World Health Organization (WHO), carried out an intensive measles and rubella vaccination campaign between March 20 and 25, 2025.
'The WHO worked closely with the local health authorities to ensure safe vaccines, trained professionals and an efficient campaign capable of reaching all children, even in the most remote areas,' said Dr. Noémia Silva, WHO immunization officer in Angola.
The campaign included fixed vaccination posts in health units, schools and communities, as well as advanced teams in the communities, ensuring that no child was left behind. As soon as she heard about the campaign, Maria also took her youngest son, who is one year old, to the post set up at the school in her neighborhood. "The vaccine is a guarantee that we won't go through the same anguish again. Now my two children are protected."
Thanks to the collective effort, almost 30,000 children have been vaccinated in the three municipalities. Thousands of families are now safer, better informed and better prepared to protect their children from possible health threats.
The initiative by the province of Lunda-Norte resonates deeply as a call to collective action, at a time when the African continent is celebrating African Vaccination Week, under the theme 'Vaccination for all is humanly possible'. This action demonstrates that with local initiatives, everyone's support and the active involvement of the community, it is possible to move towards the 'Great Recovery of Zero-Dose Children' and protect citizens from preventable diseases.
Measles is one of the most contagious diseases in the world, but it is also completely preventable through the administration of a safe and effective vaccine. Vaccinating is an act of love, responsibility and hope. Together, we can eliminate measles and save lives.

Court jails 2 for abusing drugs at Dubai Taxi labour accommodation

Dubai Misdemeanour Court sentenced two Asian nationals to three months in jail, to be followed by deportation, and banned them from transferring or depositing any funds to others, either personally or through intermediaries, without prior approval from the Central Bank of the UAE, in coordination with the Ministry of Interior. The ban will remain in effect for two years after the completion of their sentence. The suspects were charged with abusing narcotics in a labour accommodation. The incident dates back to January 2025 when a supervisor at a Dubai Taxi labour accommodation filed a report stating that during a routine inspection, he found the two suspects in their room consuming a substance suspected to be narcotics, appearing in an abnormal state. He added that one of the suspects admitted their coworker had provided the substance for Dhs10 so both were detained, and the police were notified. A policeman stated in the interrogations that the suspects were arrested, and a cigarette containing a suspected narcotic substance was found in their possession. They were reportedly taken to the General Directorate of Anti-Narcotics, where samples were collected and sent to the Dubai Police Forensic Laboratory for analysis. Lab results affirmed that the seized substance was a dried herbal narcotic listed in the drug schedule, which had been stuffed into a cigarette. Additionally, the suspects' samples tested positive for narcotics. The first suspect claimed the substance belonged to the second, who confessed that another coworker, who was later arrested and tried, had supplied the narcotic for Dhs10, after he asked him to collect the substance from an African national.

UAE- WHO initiative aims to combat malnutrition on Yemen's Socotra Island

The UAE's Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan Foundation and the World Health Organization (WHO) on Tuesday launched an initiative aimed at combatting malnutrition among women and children on Yemen's Socotra Island. Global reports say that Acute Malnutrition (GAM) rate in the island has reached 10.9 per cent, and the Severe Acute Malnutrition (SAM) rate is 1.6 per cent among children under five. Internationally, GAM rates between 10 per cent and 14 per cent are classified as serious, while SAM rates above 1 per cent are considered alarming. Mohamed Haji Al Khouri, Director-General of the Foundation, stressed the UAE's humanitarian and global responsibility to develop communities and enhance critical health services. 'This stems from the enduring humanitarian legacy of the late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan and the leadership of President His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan. We are determined to effectively address food and health challenges faced by women and children in Socotra, in collaboration with the WHO,' he said. Al Khouri explained that the Khalifa Foundation, an affiliate of Erth Zayed Philanthropies, would work with the WHO to develop appropriate solutions to nutritional and health challenges using a new survey based on current data. 'The joint initiative aims to reduce maternal and child mortality caused by malnutrition through a comprehensive plan of action spanning over two years. This will enhance maternal, infant, and child care services, and improve emergency preparedness and response to epidemics,' he added. Acting WHO Representative in Yemen Dr. Ferima Coulibaly-Zerbo said, 'This joint effort reflects our shared vision of building resilient health systems in Yemen. Together with the UAE and national authorities we are working to address urgent needs and lay the foundation for long-term health security on the Island. "Through this partnership, WHO and the UAE aim to build stronger, more responsive and more equitable health systems to serve the people of Socotra and contribute to a healthier, more resilient Yemen.' The initiative is part of joint aid activities between the UAE and WHO in Yemen aimed to provide urgent food relief and curb nutritional and health deterioration across various population groups. It will strengthen healthcare infrastructure in Socotra by training medical staff, supplying medications, and establishing emergency preparedness mechanisms. It also seeks to implement sustainable solutions for malnutrition, ensure food security, raise community awareness, and improve disease surveillance for more effective medical interventions based on ongoing assessments and studies.

UAE Launches Initiative with WHO to Combat Malnutrition in Socotra Island

The United Arab Emirates, in partnership with the World Health Organisation (WHO), has launched a humanitarian initiative to combat rising malnutrition rates among women and children on Yemen's Socotra Island. The effort, led by the Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan Foundation for Humanitarian Works, targets one of the region's most pressing health challenges. Recent data shows the Global Acute Malnutrition (GAM) rate among children under five on the island has reached 10.9%, with the Severe Acute Malnutrition (SAM) rate at 1.6%—figures that cross internationally recognised critical thresholds. Mohamed Haji Al Khouri, Director-General of the Foundation, said the initiative reflects the UAE's enduring commitment to humanitarian support and global health development. He emphasised the project's roots in the legacy of the late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan and the current leadership of President Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan. The Foundation, an affiliate of Erth Zayed Philanthropies, will work closely with WHO to develop evidence-based solutions to tackle nutrition-related health issues. The two-year plan includes reducing maternal and child mortality, enhancing emergency preparedness, and strengthening local healthcare systems. Dr. Ferima Coulibaly-Zerbo, Acting WHO Representative in Yemen, highlighted the importance of the partnership in addressing urgent needs and building long-term health resilience in the region. The initiative also aims to improve food security, raise awareness on nutrition and hygiene, train medical personnel, and boost disease surveillance. It forms part of broader joint efforts between the UAE and WHO to stabilise health conditions across Yemen through sustainable aid and infrastructure support. News Source: Emirates News Agency
