A famous chef's autopsy tells the story of his career

Washington Post14-03-2025

Samuel Ashworth's 'The Death and Life of August Sweeney' is a novel concerned with viscera and the flesh. It begins with Sweeney — a gargantuan chef, of considerable appetites — discovering the source of a wretched odor oozing from the walk-in refrigerator of his celebrated restaurant: It's a pig's head, from the beast he butchered yesterday, carelessly packaged and refrigerated by a trainee chef. 'Even tightly wrapped in Saran the jowl had sloughed off the cheekbones,' Ashworth writes. 'The lower jaw which in life had pulverized black walnuts, chestnuts, and acorns, looked melted; all up the back of its head, pustules wept. The lovely pink of its skin had gone the gray of mortar.'
In no time, Sweeney, like the pig, will be cut up and taken apart.

New Doc Explores How Julia Sweeney's ‘SNL' Favorite Pat Became a Complex Nonbinary Icon

Julia Sweeney's popular Saturday Night Live character Pat gets their plaudits (and some criticism) as a gender non-conforming pioneer in a new clip from the upcoming documentary, We Are Pat, premiering exclusively on Rolling Stone. Sweeney played Pat throughout her run on SNL in the early Nineties and even got to star in a spin-off film, It's Pat. The inscrutability of Pat's androgyny was pushed to comedic extremes, effectively offering prominent, yet thorny representation for gender non-conforming people on television long before the term 'nonbinary' was being widely used. More from Rolling Stone USC's SoCal VoCals Are Pitch Perfect in 'Just Sing' Documentary Trailer See 'SNL' Spoof Mike Myers' Infamous Kanye West Moment in Elevator Sketch 'SNL': Watch Bad Bunny Perform 'NUEVAYoL,' 'PERFuMITO NUEVO' We Are Pat director Ro Haber tells Rolling Stone in an email they 'wanted to make a film about transness that had humor at the heart of it,' and kept coming back to their complicated feelings about Pat. 'Why am I laughing at something that's meant to laugh at me? Why do I love Pat? Is Pat a nonbinary icon or a transphobic trope of yesteryear?' Haber continues. 'In exploring these questions, it was really important that the film embraced a spirit of curiosity and conversation rather than cancel culture and judgment.' The new clip opens with Karam Ann, a professor of TV studies, noting the prescience of Pat and how the relatively new discussion around nonbinary identity and the use of they/them pronouns has 'reanimated Pat from the grave.' Actor and filmmaker River Gallo, who is nonbinary, adds, 'What's interesting to me about being nonbinary, and the definition of nonbinariness, is it's saying you're not these two things. It's not really definable but only by what it isn't. It's interesting thinking of Pat in those ways.' We Are Pat will have its world premiere at the Tribeca Film Festival on Sunday, June 8. It's set to feature interviews with an array of queer and trans comedians and writers, including Molly Kearney, Esther Fallick, Abby McEnany, Pink Foxx, and Roz Hernandez. Sweeney also partook in the film, as did her SNL co-star Kevin Nealon. Haber says one of the most profound things they learned while making the film was from Sweeney, who created Pat while grappling with her 'own gendered pressure as a woman trying to make it in the Ninetes boys club of comedy and SNL.' 'Pat grew out of familial and societal expectations of femininity that were placed on Julia during that time, and Pat was something of an escape for her,' Haber says. 'In the film, she says, 'It was actually a joy to be Pat because I got to have a break from having to be a girl too.' That sense of reacting to a gender expectation placed on you felt really relatable to the comics in the film and me.' { pmcCnx({ settings: { plugins: { pmcAtlasMG: { iabPlcmt: 1, }, pmcCnx: { singleAutoPlay: 'auto' } } }, playerId: "d762a038-c1a2-4e6c-969e-b2f1c9ec6f8a", mediaId: "4665abb0-57e9-4e09-a93a-fa846cda00cb", }).render("connatix_player_4665abb0-57e9-4e09-a93a-fa846cda00cb_2"); }); Best of Rolling Stone The 50 Best 'Saturday Night Live' Characters of All Time Denzel Washington's Movies Ranked, From Worst to Best 70 Greatest Comedies of the 21st Century

Blockbuster Actress Admits She Went Up 4 Pant Sizes in 'Crazy Strong' Transformation

Blockbuster Actress Admits She Went Up 4 Pant Sizes in 'Crazy Strong' Transformation originally appeared on Parade. Sydney Sweeney is revealing just how far she went to embody legendary boxer Christy Martin in the upcoming biopic directed by David Michôd. In a new interview with W Magazine, the Euphoria star, 27, opened up about her intense physical transformation for the role that included significant muscle gain and a major shift in body size. Sweeney, who typically wears a size 23 in jeans — roughly a U.S. size 00 or 000, with a 23-inch waist and 33–34-inch hips — didn't hold back when discussing the toll and triumph of the process. "I'm usually a size 23 in jeans," the actress shared, reflecting on her transformation. To prepare for the role, she committed to an extreme training regimen. 'I came onboard to play Christy, and I had about three-and-a-half months of training,' she explained. 'I started eating. I weight-trained in the morning for an hour, kickboxed midday for about two hours, and then weight-trained again at night for an hour.' 'My body was completely different,' she continued. 'I didn't fit in any of my clothes. I'm usually a size 23 in jeans, and I was wearing a size 27. My boobs got bigger. And my butt got huge. It was crazy! I was like, Oh my god. But it was amazing: I was so strong, like crazy strong.' Sweeney is portraying Martin, a trailblazing figure in women's boxing known as 'The Coal Miner's Daughter.' Martin rose to fame after her electrifying 1996 bout with Deirdre Gogarty at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas — a moment credited with putting women's boxing on the map. Behind the scenes, however, Martin endured two decades of domestic abuse at the hands of her ex-husband, trainer Jim Martin, before surviving a brutal attack in 2010. She later came out as a lesbian. While speaking to TMZ about the project, Martin expressed excitement over Sweeney taking on her story. 'I want this movie to bring awareness to domestic violence, the challenge of sexuality and overall underdog story,' Martin said. 'I am a coal miner's daughter from a small town in southern West Virginia that made an impact in a sport that wasn't taken seriously — women's boxing.' The biopic does not yet have a release date. Sydney Sweeney Means Business in Two Very Different Summer Suits

"Hearst Magazines and Yahoo may earn commission or revenue on some items through these links." Sydney Sweeney is taking on New York like a boss. In the midst of her Echo Valley press tour, the Euphoria star dressed up for a day of bouncing around talk shows in two different suit styles. While heading into Late Night with Jimmy Fallon on Thursday, the actor was photographed in a grey archival 1996 Givenchy Couture suit by John Galliano. The suit, which nodded to Old Hollywood, featured a high-collar, semi-cropped jacket with a matching high-waisted skirt. Both pieces of the suit were equipped with bow detailing—two on either side of the jacket and the hip of the skirt. Jumping over to The Kelly Clarkson Show, Sweeney was photographed on the way to the taping in a crisp all-white suit look. The summery suit featured a fitted, plunging jacket with matching short shorts. The actor topped off the look with a sleek high pony and a smooth side strip on one side of her face. The White Lotus star accessorized both of her sophisticated suits with black pointed-toe pumps and black top-handle bags. Throughout her press tour, the star has channeled her inner Working Girl with a selection of chic boardroom-inspired looks from a tie collared pinstripe blazer dress to a silk checkered pant set from Oscar de la Renta. But for the premiere screening of her Apple TV+ film, Sweeney strayed away from structured suit silhouettes and brought the drama in a grand Vera Wang gown. The actor wowed in the scarlet red billing ballgown—a custom creation made of decadent Italian silk. The show-stopping look gave us high glamour as was no doubt one of the best red carpet moments since this year's Cannes Film Festival.
