World Table Tennis Championships Finals: Manika, Manav, Diya's defeats end India's challenge in singles event
Doha [Qatar], May 20 (ANI): India's star paddler Manika Batra crashed out of the World Table Tennis Championships Finals 2025 after enduring a defeat against the Republic of Korea's Ga-Hyeon Park in her women's round of 64 match in Doha, Qatar, on Tuesday.
Manika, ranked 46 globally, ousted Nigeria's Fatimo Bello in her opening round fixture. However, she suffered a 4-0 (11-8, 11-7, 11-5, 11-8) defeat against Ga-Hyeon Park in the next match. The 144th-ranked paddler trounced Manika in a fixture that lasted for just over 35 minutes.
Meanwhile, Diya Chitale lost against the three-time Olympian Cheng I-Ching of Chinese Taipei in the round of 64. Chitale crashed out of the tournament after finding herself on the back foot in the opening three games.
After losing the first three games, Chitale bounced back in the fourth game. She threatened to come back after showing signs of a spirited comeback; however, Cheng closed out the win with a victory in the fifth game and moved to the next round with a 4-1 (11-3, 11-7, 11-6, 6-11, 11-5) triumph.
Coming to the men's singles event, Manav Thakkar fought with valiance, but it wasn't enough to confirm his spot in the next round. He walked out of the World Table Tennis Championships Finals after losing to Japan's Tomokazu Harimoto.
World No. 49 Thakkar made Harimoto, who is fourth in the men's singles table tennis rankings, toil hard for the victory. Manav saved two game points in the opener and even won the third and fifth games, hinting at a potential upset.
However, Manav's effort went in vain as he lost by 4-2 (13-11, 11-3, 9-11, 11-6, 9-11, 11-3) against the Japanese paddler, who is a team bronze medallist at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics.
Following defeats for Manika Batra, Diya Chitale, and Manav Thakkar, India's singles campaign at the World Table Tennis Championships Finals 2025 came to a bitter end.
Diya Chitale and Yashaswini Ghorpade, ranked 16th, will return to action and compete against the world No.6 Japanese pair of Miwa Harimoto and Miyuu Kihara in the women's doubles round of 16 match on Wednesday. (ANI)

Jarkhar Hockey Academy on Monday clinched the championship titles in both the senior and junior categories at the 15th Dabur Olympian Prithipal Singh Hockey Festival. The event, organised by the Mata Sahib Kaur Sports Charitable Trust, Jarkhar village, saw standout performances with star players Pawanpreet Singh Dangora and Manavdeep honoured with the title of 'dabur hero of the match' for their match-winning brilliance. The high-octane final matches were played under floodlights on the blue AstroTurf at Mata Sahib Kaur Sports Complex. In the senior category, Jarkhar Hockey Academy defeated Neeta Club Rampur in a nail-biting contest by 5-3 goals, claiming the Olympian Prithipal Singh Gold Cup Hockey Trophy along with a cash prize of approximately ₹81,000. Earlier, last year's champions, Dr Kuldeep Singh Moga Club, defeated Kila Raipur by 6-3 goals to secure third place. Jarkhar Academy's Gurinder Singh Guri and Rampur's Jagjit Singh were awarded 'dabur hero of the match'. International hockey star Harjot Singh Jyoti was declared the 'best goalkeeper' of the tournament. Rampur's Milkha Singh was named the 'best player of the tournament', and Pawanpreet Singh Dangora again stood out as 'dabur hero of the match'. Kila Raipur's Jagjit Singh Jaggi won the title of 'best player over 40'. All standout players were honoured with high-quality bicycles. In the junior final, Jarkhar Hockey Academy defeated Kila Raipur Hockey Centre in a hard-fought 1-0 match to clinch the junior title for the first time. Earlier, Nankana Sahib Public School Amargarh beat Ek Noor Academy Tehing by 4-3. Jarkhar Academy's goalkeeper, Dilpreet Singh, was named 'dabur hero of the match', while Kila Raipur School's Rajveer Singh was declared 'best player of the tournament'. Gurmanwadeep Singh Chahil was named 'hero of the tournament'. All players were felicitated with bicycles. At the grand final ceremony held on Monday, children from Dragon Academy, Ludhiana, won the audience's hearts with their choreographed dance performances on various songs. Chief guest, MLA Mohammad Jamil-ur-Rehman from Malerkotla, interacted with various teams, spoke about the achievements of the Punjab government, and appreciated the infrastructure of Jarkhar Stadium and the efforts of the Hockey Academy. Other dignitaries present included Prabhdeep Singh Nathowal (deputy director, public relations), international weightlifter Hardeep Singh Saini, Harbans Singh Saini, former AIG Punjab police Amrik Singh Minhas, Sukhwinder Singh Fauji, tournament manager Jagrup Singh Jarkhar, among others.

"We want to honour legends of the past": Keshav Maharaj ahead of WTC final against Australia
New Delhi [India], June 10 (ANI): Keshav Maharaj is determined to follow in the famous footsteps at the ICC World Test Championship Final 2025. South Africa will face off against Australia for ownership of the ICC Test Championship mace at Lord's, the same venue where the Proteas last got their hands on the trophy 13 years ago. A legendary South African side comprising Jacques Kallis, Dale Steyn, and Graeme Smith beat England at the fabled ground to rise to world number one that day, and Maharaj revealed those memories are fuelling motivation for his side to repeat the feat. 'I remember watching that when they lifted the mace. We know that apart from doing it for us, we want to honour the legends of the past, and hopefully we will one day be seen in the same calibre and light to win such a coveted title and hold the Test mace,' he said as quoted by the ICC media release. South Africa arrived in London in strong form following seven consecutive Test victories, with defeat last coming against New Zealand in February 2024. That run took the Proteas to the top of the ICC World Test Championship table and has bred plenty of confidence in camp ahead of the decider against Australia. 'When we started the journey two years ago, a lot of people didn't think we'd be in this situation, but with each and every series we grow more and more. Our blend of youth and experience complements each other really nicely, and we find ourselves competing for another trophy. The boys have put in a lot of hard work. The excitement is building as we edge closer and it's now about letting it sink in and soaking up the occasion to allow us to play with freedom,' added Maharaj. Maharaj is one of a number in the South African squad who have come agonisingly close to ICC silverware in the past few years. The spinner was part of the side that finished runners-up at the ICC Men's T20 World Cup 2024, while the Proteas also reached the semi-finals of both the ICC Men's Cricket World Cup 2023 and ICC Champions Trophy 2025. While those near misses still sting, Maharaj is insistent on using those experiences in a positive way. 'In previous attempts, no one expected us to reach the knockout phases of any competition, but we have reached two semi-finals and two finals. Hopefully through all those misses we come right in this one. There is a lot of inspiration we can draw from in the brand of cricket we have played in the last three or four years. If we run with it and stay true to it, hopefully this is our opportunity to finally raise that most-coveted trophy that has eluded us for a number of years,' he said On a personal note, Maharaj is just two away from 200 Test wickets, and while the experienced spinner is happy to trade individual accolades for team success, the prospect of bringing up the milestone at Lord's is one that he cannot escape. 'It would be very special. I don't pay too much attention to the numbers, I just want to help ensure my team wins, so hopefully I can get a 10-fer. I've enjoyed my journey so far, hopefully I've got a long time left, but to get that feat in front of my family at Lord's would be very special. "It's a huge honour:" James Anderson on IND-ENG Test series named after him
London [UK], June 10 (ANI): Former right-arm seamer James Anderson said that it was a 'huge honour' that the Test series between India and England has been named after him and India's legendary batter Sachin Tendulkar. Cricketing legends Tendulkar and Anderson will now have a special place in the India-England Test rivalry, as the two boards, BCCI (Board of Control for Cricket in India) and ECB (England and Wales Cricket Board), have decided to name the Test series between the two countries on them (Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy). Previously, the Test series in England was known as the Pataudi Trophy, named after former India captain Mansur Ali Khan Pataudi. When the series was played in India, it was called the Anthony de Mello Trophy, in honour of one of the BCCI's founding members and its first secretary and president. The new trophy will be officially unveiled by Tendulkar and Anderson at Lord's during the World Test Championship (WTC) final, which begins on June 11. This change comes just ahead of the new World Test Championship (WTC) cycle, with India and England set to play a five-match Test series starting June 20 at Headingley in Leeds. Speaking during a DP World event at Lord's, Anderson told ESPNcricinfo, 'It's a huge honour. I still can't quite believe it. Sachin is someone I looked up to when I was growing up, though I don't want to do him a disservice with his age. I remember watching him, an absolute legend of the game, and I played against him a lot as well. So to have this trophy is a huge honour for me, and I couldn't be more proud.' Anderson, who recently retired after playing 188 Tests, is regarded as England's greatest fast bowler. Tendulkar, widely considered one of the greatest batters in the game's history, played 200 Tests before retiring in 2013. India tour of England will take place from June to August 2025, with matches to be played at Headingley (Leeds), Edgbaston (Birmingham), Lord's (London), Old Trafford (Manchester), and The Oval (London). This will be India's first bilateral series since both Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli announced their retirement from Test cricket earlier this month.
