U.S. forces struck Iran's three main nuclear sites on Sunday, after a week of Israeli strikes on Iranian targets, and Iran said it reserved all options to defend itself.
Tehran had previously conveyed to Washington that it would respond firmly if the U.S. directly attacked Iran, and it has warned that U.S. assets in the region could be a target if it was attacked.
The U.S., which has long had major military bases in the Gulf Arab States, moved some aircraft and ships last week that may be vulnerable to a potential Iranian attack and limited access to its largest installation, Al Udeid Air Base in Qatar.

Israeli army says bodies of 3 hostages recovered in Gaza

'In a special operation... the bodies of the hostages Ofra Keidar, Yonatan Samerano and Staff Sergeant Shay Levinson were recovered from the Gaza Strip yesterday,' the military said in a statement. Mr Samerano's father had announced earlier on June 22 that his son's body, which was taken into Gaza after he was murdered in a kibbutz by the territory on Oct 7, 2023, had been recovered by the Israeli army. He paid tribute to 'the brave soldiers of the IDF (Israeli military) and the Shin Bet' security service in a message posted on Instagram. Ms Keidar, a 71-year-old mother of three, was also killed in a kibbutz and had been abducted, while 19-year-old tank commander Levinson 'engaged and fought terrorists on the morning of Oct 7 and fell in combat', a statement from the military said. The attack by Palestinian militant group Hamas on Israel in October 2023 resulted in the deaths of 1,219 people, mostly civilians, according to an AFP tally based on official figures. Of the 251 hostages seized during the assault, 49 are still being held in Gaza, including 27 the Israeli military says are dead. Israel's retaliatory military campaign has killed at least 55,908 people, also mostly civilians, according to the Health Ministry in the Hamas-run territory. The UN considers these figures reliable. U.S. President Donald Trump said he had "obliterated" Iran's main nuclear sites in strikes overnight, in a major new escalation of conflict in the Middle East as Tehran vowed to reserve all options to defend itself. Reynolds said Britain had not taken part in the strikes, though it had previously moved military assets to the region and would take "all action necessary" to defend its key allies if they came under threat. He added that Prime Minister Keir Starmer was talking to Britain's allies on Sunday. "I know often because of British military assets, RAF Akrotiri (in Cyprus) or Diego Garcia, sometimes that request is made. And this was not a situation where that request was made," Reynolds, the business and trade minister, told Sky News. Diego Garcia is a strategically important UK-U.S. military base located in the Chagos Islands. Reynolds said Britain knew about the strike in advance. "I can't tell you exactly when we did know, but we were informed, as you might expect," he said. Reynolds said that the government was in "active conversations" about chartering aircraft to get people out of the region within "hours, not days", pending the possible reopening of Israeli airspace. Britain's foreign ministry said it was preparing for a charter flight "early next week", adding that British nationals and their dependants in Israel and the Israeli-occupied Palestinian territories who were interested should register their details. Japan vigilant amid Iran conflict, mum on support for US attacks

PHOTO: AFP TOKYO - Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba said on June 22 that Japan is monitoring with 'grave concern' the developments in the Middle East after the United States attacked Iranian nuclear facilities, though he refrained from expressing immediate support for the military action taken by its closest ally. Speaking to reporters, Mr Ishiba underscored the importance of de-escalating the situation while stressing that Iran's nuclear development must be 'blocked'. Japan has traditionally maintained amicable ties with Iran even as its security alliance with the United States has remained strong. Stability in the Middle East is important for resource-scarce Japan, given its heavy dependence on the region for crude oil. While no immediate impact on energy supplies has been confirmed, Mr Ishiba said he has instructed officials to closely monitor the situation with urgency and take all necessary measures. 'We are gathering and analysing information and closely monitoring developments with grave concern,' he added. Asked whether Japan backs the US attacks, Mr Ishiba said, 'I will answer the question when appropriate,' after holding discussions within the government on the matter. The attacks on three key nuclear facilities have brought the United States into Israel's war against Iran, with President Donald Trump saying on June 21 the airstrikes had 'completely and totally obliterated' the facilities. Another batch of evacuated Japanese nationals and their family members, totaling 21, arrived by bus in Azerbaijan from Iran on June 22 , with none of them having any health issues, according to the Japanese Foreign Ministry. Their departure came after 87 Japanese nationals and their family members left Iran and Israel on Thursday. Around 200 Japanese nationals remain in Iran, while around 1,000 are still in Israel, according to the ministry.
