IPL 2025: Rohit stars as Mumbai knock Gujarat out of tournament
Rohit Sharma led Mumbai Indians' batting charge with his 81 to knock Gujarat Titans out of the Indian Premier League with a 20-run win in the eliminator on Friday.
Electing to bat, five-time champions Mumbai rode on a blazing opening stand between Rohit and England's Jonny Bairstow, who hit 47, to post 228-5 at Mullanpur in New Chandigarh.
Bowlers combined to restrict Gujarat to 208-6 despite a valiant 80 by in-form opener Sai Sudharsan in a do-or-die playoff clash.
Mumbai will now meet Punjab Kings in Qualifier 2 in Ahmedabad on Sunday to decide Royal Challengers Bengaluru's opponent in the title clash on June 3.
Wicketkeeper-batsman Bairstow joined Mumbai ahead of the playoffs due to a few players leaving the tournament to fulfil international commitments and made an instant impact in his 22-ball knock.
Rohit picked up pace despite surviving two dropped catches on three and 12 in a sloppy display of fielding by Gujarat players.
Gujarat missed wicketkeeper-batter Jos Buttler and his replacement Sri Lanka's Kusal Mendis dropped two catches with the gloves.
Left-arm spinner Sai Kishore denied Bairstow his fifty with Gerald Coetzee taking a relay catch from Sudharsan's rebound.
Rohit kept up the charge as he went past 7000 IPL runs and reached his 47th fifty in the tournament with a four.
New batter Suryakumar Yadav hit three sixes and one four in his 20-ball 33 before falling to Kishore.
Gujarat attempted to pull things back with some disciplined bowling in the middle overs as Prasidh Krishna dismissed Rohit and fellow quick Mohammed Siraj cut short Tilak Varma's knock on 25.
Skipper Hardik Pandya finished with a flourish in his unbeaten 22 off nine balls as Coetzee conceded 22 runs in the 20th over.
In reply, Gujarat lost skipper Shubman Gill in the first over when former New Zealand left-arm quick Trent Boult trapped the opener lbw for one.
Sudharsan, who leads the IPL batting chart with 759 runs, put the chase on track in key stands including an 84-run partnership with fellow left-hander Washington Sundar, who hit 48.
Jasprit Bumrah bowled Sundar with a yorker and Mumbai's latest England import Richard Gleeson rattled the stumps of Sudharsan to dim Gujarat's hopes.
Impact substitute Sherfane Rutherford fell on 24 in the 19th and with 24 needed in the final over Gleeson, who bowled just three balls before pulling out with apparent cramp, and then Ashwani Kumar kept their calm to seal Mumbai's win.

Flash floods and landslides after torrential monsoon rain over the last two days killed at least 30 people in India's northeast, officials said on Sunday. Scores of people die each year during the rainy season due to flash floods and landslides across India, a country of 1.4 billion people. India's annual monsoon season from June to September offers respite from the intense summer heat and is crucial for replenishing water supplies, but also brings widespread death and destruction. South Asia is getting hotter and in recent years has seen shifting weather patterns, but scientists are unclear on how exactly a warming planet is affecting monsoons. Last month, India's financial capital Mumbai was swamped by monsoon rain that began two weeks earlier than usual, the earliest for nearly a quarter of a century, according to weather forecasters.

India defence chief says at least one jet downed in Pakistan conflict
India's defence chief on Saturday appeared to confirm his country had lost at least one aircraft during the brief conflict with Pakistan earlier this month, he told Bloomberg in an interview. India and Pakistan were engaged in a four-day conflict this month, their worst standoff since 1999, before a ceasefire was agreed on May 10. More than 70 people were killed in missile, drone and artillery fire on both sides. Pakistan claimed its Chinese-supplied jets had shot down six Indian aircraft. India's chief of defence staff, General Anil Chauhan, called Pakistan's claims that it shot down six Indian warplanes "absolutely incorrect". But Chauhan, when pressed as to whether India had lost any jets, appeared to confirm New Delhi had lost an unspecified number of aircraft -- without giving details. "I think, what is important is that, not the jet being down, but why they were being down," he told Bloomberg TV, speaking on the sidelines of Shangri-La Dialogue defence meeting in Singapore. There was no immediate response from New Delhi. On May 11, a day after the ceasefire, India's Air Marshal A.K. Bharti, speaking to reporters, had said that "all our pilots are back home", adding that "we are in a combat scenario, and that losses are a part of combat". A senior security source told AFP three Indian jets had crashed on home soil without giving the make or cause. But until the comments on Saturday, India had not officially confirmed any of its aircraft were lost. "The good part is that we are able to understand the tactical mistake which we made, remedy it, rectify it, and then implement it again after two days and flew all our jets, again targeting at long range," Chauhan added, speaking to Bloomberg. "Why they were down -- that is more important for us, and what did we do after that", he added. The recent conflict between the nuclear-armed rivals was triggered by an attack on tourists in Indian-administered Kashmir on April 22, the deadliest on civilians in the contested Muslim-majority territory in decades. New Delhi blamed Islamabad for backing the Islamist militants it said carried out the attack, charges that Pakistan denied.

Indian actor Unni Mukundan says he didn't assault former manager
Actor Unni Mukundan has broken his silence over the recent allegations of assault levelled against him by his former manager, Vipin Kumar. In a press conference held in Kochi, Mukundan clarified that there was no physical assault and that the dispute had been misrepresented. "As a friend, I only wanted to confront Vipin about why he was speaking negatively about me. During the heated exchange, I did throw his sunglasses -- that is true," the 'Marco' star said. "But there was no physical contact." Mukundan also said that Kumar, who managed the actor's career for six years, is already facing multiple complaints from within the film industry. "There are cases against Vipin in FEFKA. More than one actress has approached film organisations with complaints about him," he said, adding that Vipin is not a registered member of the Film Employees Federation of Kerala. The controversy erupted following a first information report filed by Kumar on May 26, accusing Mukundan of physical assault and issuing threats during a confrontation at the basement parking of Mukundan's apartment complex in Kochi. "He called me for a meeting. When I arrived, he shouted at me, punched and hit me. Another person had to step in to stop him," Kumar told reporters. Kumar claimed that the incident may have been fueled by Mukundan's disappointment over the lukewarm industry response to his recent film Marco. "After the movie's release, he was disheartened that top directors weren't reaching out. He vented that frustration on me," Kumar alleged. In response, Mukundan has filed a counter-complaint with the Kerala Director General of Police (DGP), stating that he has been targeted unfairly and maliciously. We are very close friends," he clarified. Mukundan expressed his deep gratitude to the people of Kerala for supporting his journey in cinema and added, "I've worked hard to bring out my films. I will continue to do so with honesty."
