Memorial Day 2025: Several ceremonies, events across region; what to know
Today is Memorial Day.
Several events across the region will honor those men and women who have made the ultimate sacrifice for our country.

This includes parades and ceremonies throughout the Miami Valley.

Here's a list of some of those events:
Greene County:
Beavercreek- A special Memorial Day ceremony will be held at Veterans Memorial Park at 1911 North Fairfield Road at 2 p.m.. They will honor those who lost their lives while serving the United States Armed Forces. Limited bleacher seating is available. They are asking you to bring a lawn chair.
Miami County
Piqua- The 2025 Piqua Memorial Day Parade starts with a service around 10 a.m. The parade travels Park Avenue to Washington and then to Veterans' Memorial near the Forest Hill Cemetery.
Troy- The City of Troy Memorial Day Remembrance is at 11 a.m. at the Veterans Memorial area of Riverside Cemetery at 101 Riverside Drive. The city said on its website that David Norman, one of the last marines to evacuate the U.S. Embassy in Saigon, will present the keynote address.
Montgomery County:
Centerville- The city will host a Memorial Day ceremony and monument dedication at Stubbs Park. The event starts at 9 a.m. at 255 W. Spring Pike.
Dayton- Memorial Day ceremony at the Dayton VA Hospital starts at 11 a.m. It takes place in the tent on top of Monument Hill. The cemetery will be closed to traffic until 1 p.m. Parking is available in the lots on Connecticut and Main Avenues on the VA Campus.
Huber Heights- The annual Memorial Day Ceremony will take place at the Veterans Memorial at Thomas A. Cloud Park at 4 p.m. at 4704 Brandt Pike. They will honor those who lost their lives while in service to the United States.
Miamisburg- Several Memorial Day events will take place from 8:45 a.m.-1 p.m. The event will include:
8:45 a.m.- Ceremony at Our Lady of Good Hope Catholic Cemetery, 1 N. 9th Street
9:15 a.m.- Ceremony at Hillgrove Union Cemetery, 1002 E. Central Avenue
9:40 a.m.- Ceremony at Highland Memorial Cemetery, 723 Upper Miamisburg Road
10:30 a.m.- Linden Avenue Bridge Ceremony
11 a.m.- Parade
Preble County:
Eaton- The annual Memorial Day Parade begins at 9 a.m. on Vine Street between the Red Mule and the former Armory. The parade begins at 10 a.m. and will travel west on Main Street.
Warren County:
Springboro- The annual Memorial Day Parade starts at 2 p.m. on S. Main Street in Historic Springboro. There will be a ceremony at Wade Field after the parade.

Ohio State football legend passes away at age 87 An Ohio State football legend has passed away. Former Buckeye and Minnesota Vikings defensive end Jim Marshall died at the age of 87 on Tuesday. He played under Woody Hayes in 1957 and 1958, helping lead the team to a national championship in 1957. He was a two-time All-Big Ten performer and was recognized as a third-team All-American in 1958. His Ohio State career was awfully good, but it was the NFL where he really shined. Marshall began his professional career in the Canadian Football League with the Saskatchewan Roughriders, but was eventually traded to the Cleveland Browns in a rare CFL/NFL swap. He played one year in Cleveland before being traded to the Minnesota Vikings as part of the 1962 NFL expansion. He became a perennial star in the Twin Cities. During a very long 20-year career (the last 19 with the Vikings), Marshall made two Pro Bowls, was a captain 14 consecutive seasons, set the league record for consecutive games played at 270 (since broken by Brett Favre in 2008), and helped anchor the famed "Purple People Eaters" defensive line. He was an NFL champion in 1969, has been inducted into the Minnesota Ring of Honor, and also has his No. 70 retired in the Twin Cities. "The entire Minnesota Vikings organization is mourning the loss of Jim Marshall," Vikings owner Mark Wilf and their ownership group said in a statement. "No player in Vikings history lived the ideals of toughness, camaraderie, and passion more than the all-time iron man. A cornerstone of the franchise from the beginning, Captain Jim's unmatched durability and quiet leadership earned the respect of teammates and opponents throughout his 20-year career. Jim led by example, and there was no finer example for others to follow. His impact on the Vikings was felt long after he left the field. Jim will always be remembered as a tremendous player and person." Marshall was inducted into the Ohio State Athletics Hall of Fame in 1978. May he rest in peace.

Why are some shoppers boycotting Walmart this week?
Another weeklong Walmart boycott is set to start Tuesday and will continue through Memorial Day. The company has been facing backlash since rolling back DEI programs in the past year but grassroots advocacy group The People's Union USA, which is led by John Schwarz and organized the first Walmart blackout in early April as well as this second one, told The Arizona Republic the actions of The People's Union USA are not directly tied to companies' DEI stances. "The mission of The People's Union USA is to hold corporations and corrupt systems accountable, not with violence or empty promises, but with the one thing that actually affects them, the money we spend," Schwarz said to The Arizona Republic via email. Here's what New York shoppers should know. The weeklong Walmart boycott begins Tuesday, May 20, and runs through Monday, May 26. While specific details haven't been released about this boycott, April's boycott included the chain's stores, online platforms, and Sam's Club, Walmart's membership-only warehouse.
