Alejandro Kirk's three-run homer powers Blue Jays past Rays 3-1
TORONTO - Alejandro Kirk's three-run blast powered the Toronto Blue Jays past the Tampa Bay Rays 3-1 on Wednesday.
Kirk's third home run of the season broke open the game after Toronto (21-21) trailed by a run for two innings.
Chris Bassitt struck out six and limited the Rays to just one run over 5 2/3 innings, despite giving up seven hits and two walks.
Relievers Brendon Little (2-0), Yariel Rodriguez and Yimi Garcia preserved the win, with Garcia earning his third save of the season.
Kameron Misner's RBI single in the third gave Tampa Bay (19-23) its only lead of the game.
Ryan Pepiot (2-5) gave up three runs over six innings of work, striking out seven but giving up six hits and a walk. Eric Orze pitched two innings of scoreless relief.
Takeaways
Rays: Pepiot was superb until the sixth inning when he walked Vladimir Guerrero Jr. — his first bases on balls of the game — and then gave up a single to Daulton Varsho, setting up Kirk's three-run homer and Tampa's loss.
Blue Jays: Leaving runners on base continues to be a problem for Toronto, with the hosts stranding six across the game, including Guerrero at third base twice. That adds to the 305 players left on base by the Blue Jays, tied with the Philadelphia Phillies for seventh most in Major League Baseball, heading into Wednesday's game.
Key moment
Bassitt's outing could have been derailed in the fourth when Travis Jankowski made contact with the ball. Blue Jays second baseman Ernie Clement fielded the hit and fired it home to Kirk to get Misner out at home for the inning's second out. Danny Jansen then grounded out to limit the damage to Misner's RBI single.
Key stat
Kirk's batting average improved to. 293 with two hits on Wednesday, eights points better than his average in 2022 when he made his only all-star game appearance.
Up next
Kevin Gausman (3-3) will take the mound for Toronto in the matinee finale Thursday.
Zack Littell (2-5) gets the start for Tampa Bay.

Marlins pitcher Ryan Weathers was terrifyingly struck in the head by catcher's throw
Marlins pitcher Ryan Weathers was terrifyingly struck in the head by catcher's throw Marlins pitcher Ryan Weathers has gone through countless warmups during his baseball career, but Saturday's freak accident with catcher Nick Fortes had to be a first. With Weathers going through his regular routine ahead of Miami's game against the Rays, he finished his final warmup pitch and started walking across the path of the mound. That was when Fortes' throw over to second struck Weathers right on the head. Weathers immediately went down in pain and understandably so — that was incredibly scary. The trainers took to the field to attend to Weathers, and at the time, he said he was fine to stay in the game. But after three innings, Weathers was taken out of the game. He described feeling increasingly worse as the game went on, via ESPN: "I just felt very disconnected out there a little bit just with like, just all that adrenaline left me," he said. "... It was kind of like that episode of 'SpongeBob' where like everything's on fire inside of his brain and I just felt like I was in pure chaos after that happened. So it was just kind of the right time to come out of the game there." Given the circumstances, it could have been much worse. He was cleared of a concussion on Saturday, and the Marlins won, 11-10.

Texas added three insurance runs off reliever Eduardo Salazar in the eighth. Haggerty and Langford led off with singles and Semien hit a two-run double. Adolis Garcia singled in the final run. Henry Davis' second HR in as many days lifts Pittsburgh Pirates to victory Davis hit a tiebreaking solo home run in the bottom of the seventh inning to lift Pittsburgh to a 2-1 victory over Philadelphia on Saturday after the slumping Phillies placed star first baseman Bryce Harper on the injured list before the game with right wrist inflammation. Davis hit his fourth home run of the season and second in as many games to left-center off Ranger Suarez (4-1) on a first-pitch changeup to snap a 1-1 tie. The Pirates won for the third time in four games and can sweep the three-game series on Sunday. The Phillies' lone run came on Kyle Schwarber's 20th homer with one out in the first inning off Andrew Heaney. Philadelphia has lost eight of its last nine games after winning 12 of 13. Nolan Gorman led off the ninth with a ground-rule double before being replaced with a pinch runner. After Pedro Pages reached on an error by pitcher Ben Casparius (4-1), the Dodgers vacated left field to play with five infielders, and Arenado's lazy fly ball landed just inside the foul line and bounced into the stands for another ground-rule double. The Dodgers, who lead the majors in scoring, home runs and batting average, were held scoreless for the first 17 innings of the series, but managed to tie it when Shohei Ohtani scored on a wild pitch by Ryan Helsley (3-0) in the top of the ninth. It was the second straight blown save for Helsley. Dodgers starter Yoshinobu Yamamoto struck out nine in six scoreless innings, allowing four singles and two walks. Reporting by The Associated Press. Maple Leafs Connected to NY Rangers Veteran Amid Offseason Retool
The Toronto Maple Leafs are entering an offseason of possible big changes after another early playoff exit. With over $26 million in projected cap space and a need to reshape the roster, Toronto is starting to get linked to several potential trade targets. Advertisement One name gaining traction is New York Rangers forward Chris Kreider, who could be on his way out of Manhattan. According to The Fourth Period's David Pagnotta, the Leafs are among the teams that could pursue Kreider this summer. In a piece for The Fourth Period, Pagnotta noted that New York may shop the 34-year-old winger to free up space. 'Is Chris Kreider the right target? The New York Rangers are expected throw his name out there again as they try to free up some cap space," Pagnotta wrote. "The former 52-goal scorer had a down year, but his $6.5 million cap hit, and style of player, could fit nicely on the team's second line if they feel he can regain 30+ goal form.' Advertisement Kreider finished the season with 22 goals and 30 points in 68 games, a sharp decline from the 39-goal campaign he posted just a year earlier. Kreider has two years remaining on his seven-year, $45.5 million contract and holds a 15-team no-trade clause, holding some leverage in his potential destination. New York Rangers left wing Chris Kreider (20) celebrates a goal with Artemi Panarin (10).Jim Rassol-Imagn Images Though Kreider expressed his desire to remain with the Rangers, trade speculation has surrounded him since reports emerged that general manager Chris Drury circulated his name in a memo to other teams at the start of the season. 'This is home for me,' Kreider said. 'This is the organization that gave me an opportunity to live out my dream.'
