Bhopal: Top Congress leaders from the state will observe a fast in Gwalior on June 25 to press for the installation of BR Ambedkar's statue on the premises of the MP high court's Gwalior bench.
Notably, a controversy has erupted between two groups of lawyers over the installation of the statue.
Addressing a press conference in Gwalior on Sunday, Congress state unit media wing chairman Mukesh Nayak said the fast would be observed at Surya Namaskar tri-section in Gwalior in which party state in-charge Harish Chaudhary, state chief Jiu Parwari and several party leaders would participate.
Nayak said how there could be any resistance or opposition to installation of Ambedkar's statue on the premises of the high court.
He said: "The fast is being organised by the party to give a clear message that there can't be a bigger and holier agenda than allegiance to the Constitution and social harmony."

Ahead of Bihar polls, EC plans house-to-house survey for electoral roll

The Election Commission of India is planning to conduct an 'intensive house-to-house verification' of the voters' list in Bihar ahead of the assembly polls due in the state later this year, officials said on Sunday. Such an intensive and rigorous revision of the electoral rolls has been done in the past as well with the last such exercise undertaken in 2004 (HT Photo) Concerns have been raised by various civil society organisations, political parties and others persistently over the inclusion or deletion of names in the electoral rolls, the officials said. 'To ensure the system is completely robust and error-free, the ECI is considering an intensive house-to-house verification during the upcoming electoral roll revision before the Bihar Assembly polls,' an EC official familiar with the matter said requesting anonymity. The regular exercise of revision of electoral rolls is undertaken annually throughout the country by the EC and also before the holding of elections or bypolls. The provisions regarding eligibility to be registered as a voter and disqualification are clearly laid down in Article 326 of the Constitution and Section 16 of the Representation of the People Act, 1950 respectively, they said. Inter-state and intra-state movement of voters is another key reason why rolls need updation. For instance, during 2024, according to the forms received by the EC, 4.6 million people shifted their residence, 23 million applied for corrections and 3.3 million requested for replacement, the commission said in a statement issued on Sunday. Thus, in a single year, nearly 31 million changes were required to be made across the country, the commission said in the statement. Officials lamented that despite following a detailed protocol, insinuations and allegations are often made against the EC of arbitrarily inflating the electoral roll, even though the exercise is conducted with complete transparency and under constant scrutiny of political parties. Several parties, including the Congress, have accused the poll authority of manipulating voter data.

Union Minister Jitendra Singh unveils ANI Chairman Prem Prakash's book 'History That India Ignored'

New Delhi [India], June 23 (ANI): Union Minister Jitendra Singh on Sunday unveiled 'History That India Ignored', a book authored by Asian News International (ANI) Chairman and veteran journalist Prem Prakash. Speaking at the launch event, Singh, Minister of State for Personnel, Public Grievances and Pensions, highlighted a passage from the book's preface regarding the Congress party's early political stance. 'Till 1930, the demand of the Congress Party was only for home rule under the status of a Dominion of the British Empire, with the British monarch appointing a Governor General,' he said. 'This is something which is going to trigger quite a few heads. In other words, however much the Congress Party might claim to be the torchbearer of India's freedom struggle, its freedom struggle, if at all, on record began only after 1930,' Singh said. The Union Minister said that Congress's entire span leading up to independence was only 17 years, of which 4 years were the Second World War. 'The entire span leading up to independence is only 17 years, out of which 4 years are the Second World War. The high point was the Quit India Movement of 1942, which means that for only one decade, the Congress Party was apparently active as freedom fighters. But the drum beating has successfully carried on for all of us a century now, and that is where the book's title finds its justification- 'History That India Ignored',' he said. Singh also drew attention to the book's focus on revolutionary freedom fighter Madan Lal Dhingra. 'I think the most telling revelation, or a lesser-known fact, brought to light by the author Prakash ji is that of Madan Lal Dhingra, who killed Curzon Wyllie on July 1, 1909, in London,' he said. Highlighting Dhingra's defiance during his trial, Singh said, 'During the trial, he refused to hire an advocate. He was sentenced to death, and when he was asked to make the last statement, he wrote: 'No English Court has the authority to arrest me... If it is patriotic for an Englishman to fight against the German if they were to occupy his country, then it is much more justifiable and patriotic in my case to fight against the English.'' He also criticised the Congress party for distancing itself from Dhingra. 'The most important fact is that the Congress Party passes a resolution condemning the Dhingra Act, dissociating itself from Dhingra and Gandhi ji also unfortunately does... None of his family members visited him in prison till he was hanged, and did not even claim his body... There was only one person who had the courage and conviction to visit him in jail and meet him, and his name was Veer Savarkar,' Singh said. Prem Prakash's book revisits the untold stories from the Indian freedom struggle that are not commonly known but essential for the spirit of India. (ANI)

‘Clearly escalatory': Opposition on US strikes on Iran nuclear sites

Several opposition parties Sunday criticised the US strikes on Iran's nuclear sites, with the Congress saying that the government should uphold the 'inviolability of national sovereignty and the two-state solution' as they are two fundamental postulates followed by the country traditionally. Congress MP and general secretary of the party's foreign affairs department Manish Tewari told The Indian Express, 'The strikes are clearly escalatory and will further confound the dynamics in the Middle-East. It is unclear whether the strikes are in contravention of the US War Powers Resolutions, under which the authority to declare war is with the US Congress.' He said the strikes also undermine the negotiations between the US and Iran, which were being mediated by Oman, and between Iran and European nations. 'It is also unclear whether Iran had any nuclear weapons in its possession… There were ghost WMDs (weapons of mass destruction) which became the basis of the attack on Iraq in 2003. Or for that matter the mass graves that were the cause of purported action against Libya by European powers under the specious R2P doctrine,' said Tewari. The Congress has been vocal against Israel's strikes in Iran and its offensive in Gaza. CPP chairperson Sonia Gandhi Saturday criticised the government's silence on Israel's offensive in Gaza and Iran as 'not just a loss of its voice, but also a surrender of values'. In an article in The Hindu titled 'It is still not too late for India's voice to be heard', she said the Narendra Modi government had abandoned India's long-standing and principled commitment to a peaceful two-nation solution envisioning an independent Palestine along with Israel. She also criticized US President Donald Trump for following a 'destructive path' in West Asia. SP chief Akhilesh Yadav said, 'the Central government is confused about foreign policy'. 'The government should clarify its stand on foreign policy. A friend is recognised in bad times. Not standing with someone who has always supported you in bad times is a betrayal.' TMC MP Sagarika Ghose told The Indian Express that the 'need now is for diplomacy and de-escalation'. 'A volatile West Asia is not in anyone's interest. India can't just be a bystander…' she said. AIMIM chief Asaduddin Owaisi called the US strikes a violation of international laws and Treaty on Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons. He said after the US bombing, some of the Arab countries in West Asia may go for nuclear weapons due to Israel's 'blackmailing and hegemony'. In a joint statement, the Left parties said, 'This is a grave violation of Iranian sovereignty and the UN Charter, and it will inflame global tensions, destabilise West Asia…'
