Northampton healthcare organization Transhealth accepting new pediatric patients
NORTHAMPTON, Mass. (WWLP) – A non-profit healthcare organization in Hampshire County is accepting new pediatric patients for primary and specialty care for the first time since May 2024.
Transhealth in Northampton has recently hired Dr. Ashley Brown as the organization's new Co-Primary Care Director and pediatrician. Dr. Brown worked and lived in Iowa until the state implemented a ban on medical healthcare for trans youth.
Advocates looking for 'actual strategy' for Bay State LGBTQ+ community
Brown said she is committed to providing gender-affirming care for trans youth, bringing a special perspective to the practice as a trans woman herself.
'My job as a pediatrician–which is the best job in the world– is to keep kids healthy and safe, and to partner with families to support the physical and social-emotional growth of their children,' Brown said. 'I am fully committed to taking care of all children, including trans and gender-diverse children, using the most up-to-date standards of care, and that's exactly what I am doing at Transhealth.'
Transhealth was founded in 2021 and is the only independent, non-profit healthcare organization in the United States devoted exclusively to serving the trans and gender-diverse community. The organization said it has doubled down on services for its most vulnerable patients.
'In an age where trans people are being vilified and weaponized, we refuse to retreat and are doubling down on making sure that trans and gender-diverse youth have the medically necessary healthcare they need and deserve,' said Transhealth CEO Jo Erwin, RN, BSN (any pronouns). 'When trans and gender-diverse young people receive best practice, evidence-based care and support, they thrive. It's that simple.'

Austin overdose deaths plummet
Drug-related deaths in Travis County have dropped from pandemic-era highs, but are still above 2019 levels, CDC data shows. Why it matters: Fatal overdoses initially rose during the COVID pandemic, but have been falling since 2023 as naloxone, which reverses an opioid overdose, has become more widely available. Flashback: Narcan, the best-known name brand of the drug, was made available over the counter in 2023. It is standard issue for first responders and available in treatment centers and some public places. By the numbers: Deaths from opioid use are still the No. 1 cause of accidental death in Travis County, Travis County Judge Andy Brown said this week, but opioid-related deaths dropped from 486 in 2023 to 380 in 2024, a 22% decrease. Fentanyl-related deaths decreased from 279 to 179 in that same time frame, or 36%, Brown said. Opioids include drugs like fentanyl and oxycodone. Naloxone works only on opioid overdoses. What they're saying:"We are no longer in Austin and Travis County reacting to a crisis," Mayor Kirk Watson said at a news conference this week to talk about how a $2 million federal grant that's ending (as scheduled) helped make progress in fighting overdoses. "We are building a system that prevents it." The decline translates into "lives saved, families intact and a community that's learning how to keep each other safe," Watson said. Zoom in: Among other things, the grant paid for the distribution of more than 24,000 doses of Narcan — including in every police car, ambulance and fire engine — and the training of more than 1,100 people in how to recognize an overdose and administer naloxone. Yes, but: Even with the decline, numbers are still above pre-pandemic figures. In the 12-month period ending in January 2020, there were about 174 overdose deaths in Travis County, per CDC data.

What do we need to know about star Boston Celtics forward Jaylen Brown getting surgery?
What do we need to know about star Boston Celtics forward Jaylen Brown getting surgery? What do we need to know about star Boston Celtics forward Jaylen Brown getting surgery on his knee? The Georgia native had been dealing with knee soreness impacting his game on the court since the latter third of the 2024-25 NBA season, and it continued to bother him through the end of Boston's run in the 2025 NBA Playoffs. Brown's malady had initially been described as a bone bruise and knee impingement, but later word broke that the Cal alum had been playing on a partially torn meniscus. After that, his prognosis was vague, with Brown himself relating that he needed to see several doctors to decide on the best course of action. Earlier this week, news of his successful surgery broke via the team -- what impact will it have on the season to come and Brown's future? The hosts of the CLNS Media "How Bout Them Celtics!" podcast, Jack Simone and Sam LaFrance, took some time on a recent episode of their show to talk it over. Check it out below!
