Champions Italy drawn to face hosts China in BJK Cup Finals

Reuters12-05-2025

May 12 (Reuters) - Holders Italy will meet hosts China while 18-times winners the United States face Kazakhstan in the last eight after the draw for the Billie Jean King Cup Finals to be held in Shenzhen in September was made on Monday.
Spain take on Ukraine in another quarter-final at the elite women's team competition while Britain play Japan, organisers the International Tennis Federation said following a ceremony in the south-eastern Chinese city.
The game's global body added that former world number two and Grand Slam champion Conchita Martinez would return as the tournament director for a third consecutive year.
"Last year's Finals were a powerful reminder of just how much this competition means - not only to the players, but to fans around the world," Martinez said.
"Returning as tournament Director for a third year is an opportunity to build on that energy and continue shaping an event that celebrates the very best of team tennis."
The ITF announced in January that the Finals would be held in Shenzhen until 2027. This year's edition takes place from September 16-21 after being rescheduled from its November slot.
WTA tournaments will take place in Asia in Seoul, Beijing, Hong Kong, Wuhan, Osaka, Ningbo, Guangzhou, Tokyo and Jiujiang between September and October and the ITF's move is aimed at helping players navigate the calendar better.
Italy eased past Slovakia 2-0 in last year's Billie Jean King Cup final to claim their fifth title.

Ex-Roma star Nicolo Zaniolo breaks silence after being accused by his former club of being 'visibly intoxicated', urinating on their property and hospitalising two youth players

Nicolo Zaniolo has insisted he has not committed 'any violent acts' but admitted he did not act in 'the most appropriate way' after being accused of hospitalising two youth players in a dressing room brawl. Roma initially brought the alleged incident to light shortly after their Primavera championship semi-final against Fiorentina - the club that Zaniolo spent last season on loan at from Turkish side Galatasaray. After Fiorentina claimed a 2-1 victory to book their place in the final of the youth team competition, Zaniolo is said to have gone to Roma's locker room. The Italian, who made 128 appearances for Roma between 2018 and 2023, took to Instagram to address the matter, protest his innocence, while apologising for failing to conduct himself in a manner befitting someone of his level of seniority. 'Obviously I cannot go into the merits of the explanations I have provided regarding the dynamics of the events, which I believe to be conclusive,' he wrote. 'I reiterate that I have not committed any aggressive or violent acts against anyone, but that I was the target of unjustified insults and provocations by some AS Roma members; nevertheless, I recognize that I did not react in the most appropriate way given my role and experience. 'I have always believed in the values of sport and in the importance of providing young people with positive role models: I am sorry that I have failed in this responsibility and I promise to treasure this unpleasant experience for the future.' In a statement last month, alleged that Zaniolo 'engaged in provocative behaviour' and physically struck two of their players. They later doubled down on the claim and provided details on the alleged altercation, with the club accusing Zaniolo of being 'visibly intoxicated' and urinating on their property. Roma's statement read: 'On the evening of May 26, following the Primavera semi-final match Fiorentina vs AS Roma at Viola Park, Nicolo Zaniolo (Fiorentina first team) unlawfully entered the Roma dressing room area accompanied by an associate, despite lacking accreditation. Witnesses report Zaniolo appeared visibly intoxicated. He urinated in Roma facilities, provoked players, and, without verbal exchange, physically struck Mattia Almaviva and violently pushed Marco Litti against a bench. 'Litti had recently undergone shoulder surgery. Both players required hospitalization: Almaviva received a 10-day recovery prognosis, Litti 21 days. 'AS Roma stands firmly by its youth players and is appalled by the violent and unjustifiable behavior witnessed at Viola Park. 'We trust that the institutions will act decisively to ensure accountability and protect the values of Italian football.' The FIGC - Italy's football federation - launched an investigation, which could see Zaniolo handed a lengthy ban if found guilty of any wrongdoing. Zaniolo, who spent the 2023-24 season on loan at Aston Villa, denied the allegations made against him after Roma's statement. He has now revealed that he has given evidence to federal prosecutors in the case.

Alfa Romeo is going racing again… with a sailing boat

First Look Storied automotive brand will compete in the Americas Cup, which is famous for not having cars in it Skip 1 photos in the image carousel and continue reading Spot the odd one out: a) Formula 1, b) Le Mans, c) the European Touring Car Championship, d) the America's Cup. If you said d), congratulations! You've successfully identified the one that isn't motorsport. That isn't stopping Alfa Romeo though. The Italian brand – known the world over for its cars, which are also known the world over for not really working very well on water – is entering the 2027 America's Cup in partnership with sailing outfit Luna Rossa Team. Let's get #AlfaLogic trending immediately. Advertisement - Page continues below But 'it's not just about putting a logo on the sails or on the boat' says team skipper Max Sirena. 'We actually started the engineering work and transfer between the two teams even way before signing the contract.' Allow us to explain. Sort of. Alfa argues that there will be an 'exchange' of know-how that will benefit both it and the sailing team, chiefly in aerodynamics, materials and (please don't snigger back there) quality control. You might like And there will legit be some Luna Rossa-based limited edition Alfas too. 'I don't want to reveal too much, but the idea is to make some specific cars, developed together with Luna Rossa,' teases Cristiano Fiorio, head of global marketing, communication and strategic projects. 'That means some performance cars, some limited edition cars that will embed the best know-how of both brands. We believe that a limited edition of cars carved together with Luna Rossa Team will be the answer to sell, as we were saying, additional cars.
