Correct use of inhaler is a must to control asthma: Docs

Lucknow: Improper
inhaler use
, irregular medication and lack of expert consultation are major reasons why many asthma patients fail to control their condition effectively, warned doctors from the department of pulmonary and critical care medicine at KGMU on the eve of
World Asthma Day
.
Speaking at a media interaction, experts emphasised the urgent need to correct common mistakes and raise public awareness to improve the quality of life for asthma patients. "Many patients inhale too quickly or fail to coordinate their breath with the inhaler spray. Some do not use spacers, which are crucial for delivering medicine to the lungs," said HOD Prof Ved Prakash. He added that proper technique—such as lifting the chin and sealing the lips tightly around the device—can make treatment more effective.
Prof Rajendra Prasad, former department head, warned against stopping medication during pregnancy without medical advice. "
Asthma medication
should be continued under supervision to ensure the safety of both mother and child," he said.
They highlighted other common mistakes, such as not shaking metered-dose inhalers before use, failing to rinse the mouth after using steroid inhalers, or accidentally blocking the device with the tongue or teeth. They urged patients to follow a regular medication schedule, take annual flu vaccines and seek care from specialists like chest physicians or allergists.
Experts said only about 5% of asthma patients are properly diagnosed and treated. Poor air quality, underdiagnosis, and lack of awareness continue to add to the disease burden. They also noted a rise in allergies globally, which are major triggers for asthma.
"Allergens, air pollution, cold air, infections, physical activity and emotional stress can worsen asthma. While it cannot be cured, with the right treatment and lifestyle changes, patients can lead normal, active lives," said Prof Prasad.
The team also stressed the importance of accurate diagnosis through pulmonary function tests and allergy assessments like skin prick testing. Looking ahead, they called for wider access to affordable medications, cost-effective inhalers, stronger pollution control laws, public education campaigns, and the use of digital tools to monitor asthma.

One dead, two injured as woman in car strikes several on footpath in Lucknow

A woman rashly driving a car struck several people, killing one and injuring two others on a footpath near Shia PG College in Lucknow on Tuesday afternoon, police said. Among the two injured, one is a 10-year-old, who was hospitalised. Around 3:30 pm, the speeding car first hit the extension of a cafeteria near the college and then ran over a bicyclist before hitting a street pole that brought it to a stop, police and eyewitnesses said. The incident was caught on CCTV, the footage of which has been doing the rounds on social media. 'Upon reaching the spot, police found out that the car (bearing registration number UP32KE0037) had veered off its path and climbed the footpath. It had struck people standing there before colliding with an electric pole,' said Lucknow police in their official statement. According to eyewitnesses, the woman was driving rashly, which resulted in the car losing control. 'It crashed into a pole, otherwise, it would have injured more people,' said one. Police said Tanu Gupta, 35, who lives in Saadatganj area of the city and works in the real estate sector, was driving the car. She was coming from the Daliganj Crossing when she struck people. Madyeganj SHO Rajesh Singh said, 'The woman was an experienced driver and had her driving licence as well. She was not under the influence of alcohol.' The SHO added an FIR had been registered under relevant sections of the BNS in the case. Police, with the assistance of locals, rushed the injured to the Balrampur Hospital. Virendra Pandey, 45, from Khadra succumbed to his injuries during treatment, said the statement. Pandey was a contract worker at KGMU. His brother Sunil Pandey said he was returning home from a market when he was run over. He is survived by his wife Saroj, son Krishna and daughter Anya Pandey. Daksh Sonkar, 10, who hails from Bansmandi Bhanu Tola on Sitapur Road and was under medical care, was one of the two people injured in the accident. The other is a woman, but was yet to be identified. She is believed to be a beggar. She sustained minor injuries in the mishap. Mujahid, an eyewitness, said: 'I was heading towards the crossing on my bicycle when I saw a car speeding down the other track. As I approached the gate of Shia PG College, I heard a loud noise. I stopped my bicycle and saw that the same car had run over several people. I rushed to the spot. One of the injured was being taken in an e-rickshaw, but he appeared to have died already. All of this happened within 3-4 minutes.' The car in question was seized and taken to a police station. Authorities confirmed that no law-and-order disturbance took place following the accident.

Pneumatic tube transportsystem to start at KGMU

Lucknow: Attendants at KGMU trauma centre will no longer have to run from ward to lab to submit blood samples, as the university is set to introduce a pneumatic tube transport system. Estimated at around Rs 2 crore, the project was inaugurated by Deputy Chief Minister Brajesh Pathak on Monday. Chief Medical Superintendent of KGMUTC Prof Prem Raj Singh explained that the pneumatic tube transport system is a mechanism for transferring material in bulk. The installation work will commence two months after the tendering process concludes. He further said that the trauma centre includes departments of orthopaedics, general surgery, plastic surgery, neurology, medicine and neurosurgery. It handles a heavy patient load—around 300 to 400 patients daily—keeping the laboratories occupied round-the-clock. As many patients require multiple tests, attendants are frequently seen moving between different counters. The new tube system will minimise the need for attendants to move about. Nurses or paramedical staff will place the samples in a designated container with test and patient details. This container will be transported to the lab via a vacuum-based system, saving both time and effort, Prof Singh added. To further cut down queues for diagnostics, KGMU will soon launch a digital payment facility.
