Orthodox Church relieves Zacharias Mar Aprem of all administrative duties

The Hindu23-05-2025

A special session of the synod of the Malankara Orthodox Syrian Church here on Friday decided to relieve Metropolitan Zacharias Mar Aprem of the Adoor-Kadampanad Diocese from all diocesan administrative duties, responsibilities related to the Church's governance and his role at the Church's seminary until further notice.
The decision follows a series of public remarks made by the Metropolitan a couple of weeks ago, which were found to be in conflict with the official positions of the Church. 'His statements appeared to question the authority of the 1934 constitution of the Malankara Church and diminish the importance of court rulings favourable to the Church, which have triggered protest among the faithful,'' the Church said in an official release
The synod was convened under the leadership of Catholicos of the East and Malankara Metropolitan Baselios Mar Thoma Mathews III in response to complaints concerning these statements.
Seeks explanation
The controversy began when Mar Aprem, while addressing parishioners at Chungathara and Chennithala earlier this month, alleged that the Church leadership had asked him to wrest control of certain Jacobite churches within his diocese by executing a judicial order. He claimed to have refused the request outright. These comments prompted the Catholicos to seek a formal explanation, which was then reviewed at the synod.
The Metropolitan's repeated remarks, meanwhile, also fuelled speculation that he might be considering alignment with another faction of the Malankara Church, which maintains a strong presence in the Central Travancore region.

Secular parties should approach minorities directly: Sebastian Paul

Veteran politician Sebastian Paul on Monday (June 9) said it was high time the Communist parties in Kerala reached out to the Christian community without the mediation of the community-based political organisations. He was speaking at a seminar on 'Religions and Political Parties', held as part of the second anniversary celebrations of Deshiya Manavika Vedi in Kozhikode. Mr. Paul urged Communist parties to come up with an action plan to create political awareness among the members of the community rather than appease the smaller political parties that often represent the community. 'It is quite difficult to bridge the gap between followers of communism and Christianity. Communist governments across the world have often clashed with the Church, not due to religious reasons, but due to financial and political factors,' he said. He added that the core values advocated by Jesus Christ and Karl Marx were strikingly similar, as both stood for the oppressed and marginalised. 'However, the Church later transformed into a protector of vested interests, owning large tracts of property, while communism advocated for equitable distribution of resources among the public,' Paul said. Filmmaker P.T. Kunhumuhammed, who presided over the seminar, pointed out the lack of influence of political organisations that claim to represent the Muslim population of the State. He shared Mr. Sebastian Paul's opinion that the major political parties should establish a direct line of contact with the minority communities. Social critic KEN Kunjahammed, MES president Fazal Gafoor, and writer Khadeeja Mumtaz also participated in the session. Writer K. Satchidanandan joined the discussions virtually.

Forest officials flayed for registering trespass case against Church authorities

The Kothamangalam diocese under the Syro-Malabar Church criticised the Forest department and the Forest Minister after another case was registered against the Church authorities. According to officials, on April 12 the Forest department removed a cross erected the previous day by St. Thomas Church, Thommankuth, under the Syro-Malabar Church, on a property beside the Neyyassery-Thokkumban Road at Naranganam. The department also booked a case against the parish priest for erecting the cross on forestland. On April 19, the church organised a Way of the Cross procession to the location from where the Forest department had removed the cross. But the Church authorities alleged that the Forest department booked another case against Kothamangalam diocese general Vincent Nedungattu, Chancellor Fr. Jose Kulathur and parish priest Fr. James Ikaramattom on the charges of trespassing. Fr. Jacob Rathappallil, Director of the Commission for Social Harmony and Vigilance of the Kothamangalam diocese, said that the church erected the cross on land under its possession. 'The Forest department illegally demolished the cross and did not withdraw the cases though the parish authorities submitted relevant documents. In addition, the Forest department is trying to slap more charges on the local people and the Church authorities. Fr. Rathappallil stated that the Chief Minister and the Forest Minister should intervene in this issue and take steps to prevent the Forest department officials from engaging in such actions. A senior Forest department official said that the department only booked a trespass case against the Church authorities for illegally entering forestland. 'The Forest department only issued a notice for the incident and didn't arrest any people over the issue,' said the official. Last week, the district administration decided to conduct a Revenue, Forest, and Police department-level joint verification in the area at Naranganam, near Thommankuth, from where the cross was removed. According to sources, a recent report by the Thodupuzha tahsildar said that the area was revenue land and part of human settlement.

SC stays Bombay HC order allowing Bishops to continue beyond retirement age

New Delhi, May 30 (UNI) The Supreme Court on Friday granted an interim stay on the Bombay High Court's order dated May 5, 2025, which had allowed Bishop N.L. Karkare and Bishop Subodh C. Mondal aged 76 and 73 respectively, to continue as 'Active Bishops' of the Methodist Church of India, despite exceeding the prescribed retirement age. A bench comprising Justice B.V. Nagarathna and Justice Satish Chandra Sharma passed the interim order after hearing arguments from both sides. 'We have heard the senior counsels for the petitioners and the senior counsel for the Respondent Nos. 1 and 2. Interim stay of the order until further orders,' the bench recorded. Senior Advocates Kapil Sibal and Mukul Rohatgi appeared for the petitioner, the Methodist Church, arguing that the continued service of the two bishops violates the Church's constitutional bylaws, specifically the 'Book of Discipline', which mandates retirement at the age of 70. Senior Advocates Abhishek Manu Singhvi and Ranjit Kumar appeared on behalf of the Respondents. Singhvi contended that the delay in conducting the mandatory Quadranium, a Church conference held every four years to address administrative matters, including retirements had led to the current situation. He emphasised that the Respondents do not wish to remain in office beyond their retirement period and will step down as soon as the Quadranium concludes, scheduled for July 2 or 3, 2025. Addressing the Court's concern about manipulation of Church processes, Singhvi raised an issue involving Petitioner No. 5, Bishop Dr. Anilkumar Servand, who is currently 69 years and 11 months old. Singhvi alleged that the petitioner was seeking to conduct elections before his 70th birthday in order to be elected and thereby continue beyond the retirement age under the cover of a Quadranium session. 'He is saying, conduct the election before July 2 so he can continue beyond 70. He wants to cross 70 after getting elected, which would extend his term unfairly,' Singhvi argued. To this, Justice Nagarathna remarked, 'Petitioner No. 5 can't stay just for the election.' Ranjit Kumar and another advocate for the Respondents reiterated that none of the bishops wished to overstay their term and that the delay in transition was purely due to the adjournment of the 2023 Quadranium session, which had been postponed due to budgetary constraints within the Church. The bench has stayed the High Court's interim relief and will hear the matter further at a later date. The matter raises significant questions about internal governance within religious institutions and the limits of judicial intervention in ecclesiastical affairs, Singhvi contended. UNI SNG RN
