Trent Alexander-Arnold picks Real Madrid number and will sport new name on back
Real Madrid will officially unveil Trent Alexander-Arnold as a Los Blancos player ahead of the FIFA Club World Cup but the Liverpool star will not be able to wear the No.66
Trent Alexander-Arnold will wear the No.12 shirt at Real Madrid with La Liga rules preventing him from donning the same 66 that he wore during his entire Liverpool career, and he'll have a new name on the back of it too.
The England star, 26, will officially be unveiled as a Real Madrid player on Thursday after completing a transfer worth £10million. He was poised to join on a free transfer, however, Los Blancos paid out a significant fee in order for the Reds academy graduate to participate for them in the FIFA Club World Cup rather than joining at the end of the month.
Alexander-Arnold wore the same No.66 throughout his time at Anfield, however, he is unable to wear that same number in Spain.
That's because La Liga rules state that first-team players must wear a shirt number between one and 25, with Nos. 13 and 25 reserved specifically for goalkeepers.
With that in mind, various reports have now confirmed that Alexander-Arnold will wear No.12 for his new club this coming season, with the defender also set to have his name, Trent, on the back of his shirt rather than his surname.
The No.12 was worn for over a decade by a former Bernabeu favourite in Marcelo; the Brazilian left-back made the number his own during a trophy-laden 16-year spell in the Spanish capital. Eduardo Camavinga then donned the number for a short while before switching to the No.6 last season.
Alexander-Arnold, who has signed a six-year deal with Real, has already changed his Instagram account to remove the number 66 from his handle, with his new account tag just @trent.
The defender was met with a backlash from Liverpool fans after announcing he would not be renewing his contract with the Premier League champions. He was, though, given a positive reception on his farewell appearance last month.
"I didn't know what to expect at Anfield after what happened a few weeks ago. To get the reception that I got means more than anything to me," the emotional star said after Liverpool's final game of the season.
"I hope that one day the fans of this club will be able to recognise the hard work and everything I've done for this team. There wasn't a second where I didn't think about this team. I've loved every single minute of it. It goes down as the best day of my life for me."

Wrexham coach hails Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney impact
Former Premier League midfielder and now first team coach at The Racecourse, Jones is looking forward to the next chapter on the Reds' amazing progress since the Hollywood movie stars became owners. 'Rob and Ryan have been superb from the beginning,' said Jones, who has just returned from America after taking charge of the Red Dragons' sevens team in a $1m North Carolina TST tournament. 'Their enthusiasm, drive and commitment to the club has inspired everyone connected with Wrexham. 'On the footballing side, they have brought in a quality manager in Phil Parkinson, who has now been promoted six times in his career, as well as the experienced Steve Parkin and Aidan Davison, who have great knowledge of the game. 'The players that have been integrated into the squad over the last few seasons have been a mix of youth and experience, which has proved very successful.' Jones, who was promoted to the Premier League four times as a player, says another key factor of the success is how the owners have always fully embraced Wrexham's proud history. 'Off the pitch Shaun Harvey and Michael Williamson have both used their areas of expertise to take the club forward while strengthening the link between the fans, players and staff. Humphrey Ker, who has been here since the takeover, has been a very calming and consistently supportive influence around the place as the football club has grown. 'There are people who have been at the club for many years still working here including the head groundsman Paul Chaloner, kit man Iwan Pugh-Jones and Cledwyn Ashford in youth development not to mention the support and wisdom on offer from Brian Flynn, Joey Jones and Mickey Thomas,' added Jones. 'These colleagues and Wrexham legends are the fabric of the club and the owners recognise the importance of these people'. A former pupil at Darland High School in Rossett, where Wrexham's Academy graduates now hang out, Jones began his footballing journey at Wrexham as a nine year old before being signed by Manchester United a year later. He went onto make four first team appearances under Sir Alex Ferguson before being bought by Derby County for £1.5 million in 2007. He made over 400 career appearances during spells at Wolves, Blackburn, Burnley, Wigan and Sheffield Wednesday before heading to Wrexham where he volleyed in a debut goal in Parkinson's first match in charge - a 2-2 draw at Solihull Moors in 2021.

Gabriel Magalhaes urges Arsenal to pursue summer move for Real Madrid 'phenomenon' Rodrygo as Brazil team-mate's future remains uncertain
Arsenal should step up their attempts to sign Real Madrid star Rodrygo this summer, according to his Brazil team-mate Gabriel Magalhaes. Rodrygo has emerged as a top target for the Gunners, who are looking to add firepower to a team that has finished second in the Premier League three seasons running. A new striker is the priority but a versatile attacking player is also wanted by manager Mikel Arteta. Rodrygo put big clubs across Europe on alert when he reportedly told Madrid he never wanted to play for them again having refused to feature in last month's El Clasico against Barcelona. The Brazilian winger was said to be upset about playing a secondary role behind superstar team-mates Kylian Mbappe, Vinicius Jr and Jude Bellingham, and was increasingly warming the bench under Carlo Ancelotti last season. Los Blancos would demand a significant fee if they are to part ways with Rodrygo, believed to be somewhere in the region of £70m. And Gabriel thinks his compatriot would be more than worth the money for the gunners. 'I don't know,' he responded when asked by the Podpah Podcast if Rodrygo would be arriving at the Emirates this summer. 'But I'd like obviously. He's a phenomenon. 'I've told people already, he's a phenomenon! If it was up to me, of course!' Rodrygo has developed into an integral player for Madrid since joining from Brazilian side Santos for €45million (£37.9m) in 2019. The forward, who has also won 33 caps for Brazil, may have a lower profile than fellow attackers Kylian Mbappe and Vinicius Jnr, yet he still has a hugely impressive record at the Bernabeu.

Bradley Barcola and PSG respond to Liverpool interest in £100m transfer
Bradley Barcola is not interested in a move to Liverpool this summer with Paris Saint-Germain adamant he is not for sale. The 22-year-old enjoyed a sensational campaign in the French capital, helping the club finally clinch the Champions League with a wonderful return of 21 goals and 19 assists during the 2024-25 campaign. With PSG boasting perhaps the most exciting forward line in European football, Barcola was competing with Ousmane Dembele, Desire Doue and Khvicha Kvaratskhelia for a starting berth with one of that quartet usually left on the bench. Barcola was the unlucky man in the Champions League final against Inter earlier this month, still coming off the bench to grab an assist. While there has been no indication he is unhappy with the situation in Paris, reports have claimed Liverpool will look to tempt him to Merseyside in a £100million deal once they have wrapped up a deal for Florian Wirtz. Wake up to find news on your club in your inbox every morning with Metro's Football Newsletter. Sign up to our newsletter and then select your team in the link we'll send you so we can get football news tailored to you. The France international is also on Bayern Munich's radar with the German champions eager to freshen up their wide options. Both clubs are set to be disappointed, however. Foot Mercato report PSG have ruled out any possibility of Barcola leaving the club this summer with the youngster considered integral to the team by head coach Luis Enrique. Barcola is also eager to remain at PSG with both parties 'sharing the desire to continue the adventure together'. While Liverpool are making a sizeable investment in bringing Wirtz to the club for what will be a record Premier League fee, their summer transfer window is unlikely to end there. More Trending Another attacking option is being considered with Luis Diaz also thought to be eager to leave to join Barcelona. Liverpool are keen on an ambitious move for Newcastle United star Alexander Isak, who Newcastle United value at over £150million. Arsenal have already thrown in the towel in their pursuit of the Swede with that price tag surely placing him out of Liverpool's reach too. Darwin Nunez is available for transfer and expected to leave, while Liverpool will also consider bids for Diogo Jota.
