Musk, the SpaceX founder and well-known Mars enthusiast, has argued against returning astronauts to the lunar surface. But the stunning forced exit of the billionaire's handpicked nominee for NASA chief and Musk's massive rupture with the president have handed moon backers in Congress and industry an opening — and they're seizing it. 'Elon was the main reason for the fork in the road for NASA's human exploration plans,' said Clayton Swope, a former congressional adviser on space. 'With his exodus from D.C., there's a good chance NASA will refocus back to the moon with the plan: moon then Mars.' A number of major space companies — just not SpaceX — are launching an ad campaign going big on the moon, according to two industry officials granted anonymity to discuss the effort. The move is the first sign of real pushback against the behemoth space company and its founder, who only days ago seemed to lock down government contracts every time he blinked. A television ad funded by the companies, who do not go by an umbrella name, will appear on television in the coming days with a pitch clearly aimed at Trump. A narrator, underlaid by dramatic images of America's Apollo missions, implores voters to call senators in support of the moon mission and 'keep America first in space.' A separate letter addressed to the Senate Commerce Committee, and obtained by POLITICO, backs investments in the moon, and is signed by a lengthy slate of prominent space companies — but not SpaceX. As the feud between Trump and Musk escalated on Thursday evening, the Senate Commerce Committee unveiled a new reconciliation bill that would channel $10 billion to NASA. Much of it would go to the space agency's effort to return to the moon through the Artemis program. The White House's NASA budget had proposed major cuts to Artemis, including slashing a planned lunar space station and moon missions. 'Anybody who's following space will have noticed how deeply committed [the committee is] to getting back to the moon, particularly before the Chinese get there,' said a committee aide, who was granted anonymity to discuss the bill. All of this is happening amid Musk's very public fall from grace. Trump, during the social media showdown with his former confidante, threatened to cancel Musk's contracts with the government. The SpaceX founder responded by saying he would end the Dragon spacecraft contract, which is the U.S.' only reliable way of accessing the International Space Station. (But he also suggested late Thursday night that he might not actually do so, and Trump played down the dispute in a POLITICO interview.) The president had already abruptly pulled the NASA administrator nomination for Musk ally Jared Isaacman last week, just days ahead of his likely confirmation by the Senate. Isaacman, speaking on a podcast this week, linked his ouster to Musk's provocative departure from the White House. 'I don't think the timing was much of a coincidence,' he said. This all means Congress may now have a stronger hand in negotiations with the White House over the NASA budget, which was written before Musk's break from Trump and heavily favors Mars. The administration's budget proposes major cuts to spending for the moon in favor of nearly $1 billion for landing an astronaut on Mars. SpaceX, thanks to provisions in the bill, was likely to snag a lucrative contract to build the landing system for any red planet mission. That seems much less feasible now. Senators from states with large NASA centers — such as Alabama and Louisiana — are particularly keen to latch on to moon funding. Trump has voiced support for a Mars mission, meaning the idea may not have completely faded. But with Musk's implosion and the latest moon push, a return to the lunar surface is on firmer ground than it was just a week ago. The institution said the violin had not been officially confirmed as the world's smallest, though it is smaller than the diameter of a human hair, which typically measures 17 to 180 microns (a micron is a millionth of a meter). Research projects using the nanolithography system to investigate applications—such as developing energy-efficient and faster data storage by combining advanced materials and nanoparticles—are underway at the university. Other research explores quantum materials to make next-generation memory devices smaller, faster and more reliable, and the nanolithography system helps to produce accurate test structures. Shortly after Donald Trump withdrew his nomination for Jared Isaacman to lead NASA, the billionaire private astronaut revealed what he would have changed at the agency had he been given the role of administrator. The most notable change would have been to NASA's Artemis program, which is struggling with cost overruns and a super expensive, disposable rocket. During an interview with the All-in Podcast on Wednesday, Isaacman spoke about his nomination for the role of NASA administrator and where his priorities would have lied at the agency. 'Let's complete our lunar obligations, because that's a whole other story with China,' Isaacman said. 'At the same time, in parallel, develop the capabilities to get to Mars.' If Isaacman had taken the helm at NASA, however, he would've focused on reusable hardware to reach the Moon. NASA's Artemis program has come under heavy criticism for its use of the agency's Space Launch System (SLS), an expendable super-heavy-lift rocket designed to launch the Orion capsule towards the Moon. The 5.75-million-pound rocket was built using components from NASA's Space Shuttle program, which ran from 1981 to 2011. 'It's a giant disposable rocket program that repurposes shuttle hardware,' Isaacman said during the interview. 'It's expensive, it's disposable. It is not the way to do affordable, repeatable, efficient exploration, whether it's to [the] Moon, Mars, or anywhere else.' So far, NASA has poured billions into SLS before admitting that it's ultimately unaffordable. SLS has already gone $6 billion over budget, with the projected cost of each SLS rocket being $144 million more than anticipated. That would increase the overall cost of a single Artemis launch to at least $4.2 billion, according to a report released in May by the office of NASA's inspector general. Instead of relying on SLS, Isaacman suggests focusing on reusable launch vehicles for Artemis 3 onwards. 'There's enough hardware now to fly a couple of missions and make sure you beat China back to the Moon,' Isaacman said. 'But you can't be stuck on this forever. This is literally the equivalency, by the way, of taking P-51 Mustangs [a fighter aircraft] from World War II and using them in Desert Storm, because we got to keep the plants open. And that obviously makes no logical sense whatsoever.' He went on to criticize other aspects of NASA's Artemis program. 'We signed up a lot of international partners to support it because we like collecting flags, and it doesn't necessarily always mean that what they're contributing to is in the best interests of the program,' Isaacman said. 'This is going down a rabbit hole of a lot of things because of the shortcomings of the vehicle.' This week, President Trump withdrew his nomination of Isaacman to lead NASA. The move was disappointing for the space community, which largely viewed Isaacman's prospective role as a welcomed change for the agency as it struggles with budgetary constraints and bureaucratic red tape. Trump's decision coincided with SpaceX founder and CEO Elon Musk's supposed departure from the government, which Isaacman suggests was the reason behind the president's sudden change of heart. 'I'm not going to play dumb on this – I don't think timing was much of a coincidence,' Isaacman said. 'Obviously, there was more than one departure that was covered on that day. There were some people who had some axes to grind, and I was a good, visible target.' With Isaacman gone, NASA's future is filled with uncertainty, particularly in relation to its Artemis program. The administration's proposed budget for NASA suggests phasing out its SLS rocket and the Orion capsule, and replacing them with commercial alternatives. There is a lot of emphasis on returning astronauts to the Moon, but no clear way on how to do it.
