John Swinney leads tributes after Kwik Fit founder Sir Tom Farmer dies aged 84
Sir Tom, who founded the garage chain Kwik Fit and was also a former director of MyTravel Group and Scottish Power, died at his Edinburgh home on Friday.
He owned a majority stake in Hibernian Football Club for 28 years, selling his interest in 2019 to US businessman Ron Gordon.
The First Minister hailed him as a 'generous individual to so many causes in Scotland'.

Scottish Secretary Ian Murray said he was a 'proud Scot' and a 'huge contributor' to Edinburgh's community football.
His family said in a statement on Saturday that Sir Tom's life and career 'touched many aspects of Scottish and UK life', and his philanthropy would be remembered.
They added: 'More than anything Sir Tom was a family man. Born in Leith, Edinburgh, in 1940 he was the youngest of seven children.
'He frequently spoke of the love, care and attention that was bestowed upon him by being the youngest in such a large family.'
Sir Tom started Kwik Fit in 1971 and grew it to become an international chain before selling it to Ford for £1 billion in 1999.

He was knighted in 1997 for his services to the automotive industry and made a Commander of the Royal Victorian Order in 2009 for his charitable work, including as chairman of the board of trustees for the Duke of Edinburgh's Award.
He was the first Scot to be awarded the prestigious Andrew Carnegie Medal for philanthropy, and was made a Knight Commander with Star of the Order of St Gregory the Great by the Catholic Church.
The First Minister released a statement on Saturday afternoon, saying: 'I am very sorry to hear of the death of Sir Tom Farmer, an outstanding entrepreneur and such a generous individual to so many causes in Scotland.
'He was a source of wise counsel who gave so much of himself to assist others.
'Sir Tom made a profound impact on his beloved Leith, on Scotland and the wider world. I express my condolences to his family.'

A post on Kwik Fit's X page said everyone at the company 'is very saddened', adding: 'Sir Tom will always be a towering figure in our industry. His entrepreneurship revolutionised the UK automotive aftermarket sector and built the foundations on which we stand today.
'Although Sir Tom's direct connection with the company ended more than two decades ago, his professional and personal qualities have remained a positive influence on many members of the Kwik Fit team to this day.'
The businessman had three brothers and three sisters, many nieces and nephews, and the family said he was 'proud to be an uncle to them and their families'.
He married Anne in 1966 after they met at their local church, and the devout Catholics were together for 57 years until her death in 2023.
Their family said Sir Tom often credited Anne for his business success: 'In later years when asked about the secret to his success, he would often say it was because he 'married a girl like Anne.'
'They lived their whole married life in Edinburgh and are survived by their two children and four grandchildren.

'Sir Tom's Roman Catholic faith was present throughout all areas of his life. He attended mass weekly in Edinburgh and enjoyed the friendship and company of many people with the Catholic community both here in Scotland and further afield.
'Sir Tom will be remembered by many for his deep commitment to his family, his work and his faith and for being at all times a proud Scotsman.'
Hibs paid tribute in a post on X, saying: 'Hibernian FC are devastated to hear of the passing of former owner Sir Tom Farmer, aged 84.
'Thank you for everything, Tom. Rest in peace.'
The family has asked for privacy.

Clarke beamed: 'Yes, it's been a while since the strikers scored. I spoke to both of them before the game. 'I said, if ever there was a game where they could both play up top, this was it. 'If ever there was a game where they could both get on the score sheet, this was it, which is great. 'Obviously, in the second half, when I'm making the substitutions, I'm leaving Che on because he's got two. 'I think that's the first hat-trick for a Scottish striker or Scottish player since (John McGinn in) 2019 so it's nice for Che and it's nice for George to get off the mark internationally.' Clarke sensed a determination to get a much-needed friendly win. The national coach stated: 'Yes, I think so. That is one thing we spoke about in the dressing room was getting a fast start. Our players had a little bit of anger in the performance at the start of the game. "They knew that they'd let themselves down in the previous match. "So, it's that as well as getting the early goal which makes it more comfortable and it's nice to build on that with another three goals. "Teams may win here but not too many come and score four goals. So, that's nice.' Lennon Miller and Ross Doohan also made their first starts, Clarke was pleased with both. Clarke, speaking about Miller, admitted: 'Really good. I thought we were good in the midfield. 'It wasn't easy to pass the ball. The pitch was a bit sticky but both of them were at it. 'We know what Lennon can do. He's a big prospect for us. 'It's nice to get these players on the pitch at an early age where you can start to give them international experience. It's nice.' Doohan had cut short a family holiday in Turkey for this game. Clarke added: 'We saw his performance. With his experience, with the many clubs where he has already played, he showed a high performance today.' Scotland also gave debuts to Connor Barron, Josh Doig, Kieron Bowie and Andy Irving. He thinks it was a glimpse of the country's long-term future. The former Kilmarnock manager explained: 'We brought them to the second team, they played their first international games and they showed good performances. It's nice to have such young and fresh players in the team. 'Now it's up to them to make it difficult for me to leave them out of the squad. But I think if you look at the team that's on the pitch at the end of the game it's maybe a glimpse into the future.' 'They made it difficult for me to leave them out of the squad. They performed well in training. So I decided to switch them in the second half.' It was also confirmed assistant John Carver will be leaving his role to concentrate on his head coach role at Lechia Gdansk. Clarke confirmed: 'John's leaving. He's got a full-time contract, three years in Gdansk. So he's going to move on. The only surprise for me is that it's taken five years for somebody to take John off me. 'We came across each other way back in 1998 at Newcastle when I was a young coach and John was an even younger coach, we came across each other. He was looking after the younger players at Newcastle. We always said that we'd try and work together. It took us a long time to get there. But we did. He's been outstanding for us. 'For me as a head coach, John's been a fantastic assistant. Obviously, I wish him all the best in the future. 'Now I've got to start the job of looking to fill his shoes, and they are big shoes to fill.'

In a short clip posted on Instagram, Lawrence and Nicole were filmed walking along the beachfront in the beautiful Ayrshire sun. It also showed Nicole posing for pictures in front of the shore, with Lawrence captured inside the hotel lobby, and both of them meeting up again outside the entrance. The couple shared intimidate moments both inside and outside of the hotel, while also being filmed when catching up their with their groomsmen and bridesmaids. The video also provides fans with a behind the scenes sneak peek of the wedding venue and how it all looked on the day for Mr and Mrs Shankland. The striker was joined by a number of his Hearts team-mates for the big day. Shankland will be enjoying his well-earned time off from football after season finished before his big day. LEE WILKIE: Dundee United must not lose Scottish heart
Dundee United and Jim Goodwin have a crucial summer transfer window. But they must be careful. They face a difficult second season in the Premiership after over-achieving on return to the top flight. You only have to look over the road to see what can happen in the next campaign. There is a squad overhaul set to begin. Key players left at the end of last season and will need replaced. The first player expected to arrive is Moldovan international Iurie Iovu. Goodwin's record over the past few seasons of plucking players out of Europe has been good. Hopefully this is another gem. However, I do hope they don't go losing the Scottish heart to the squad. Guys like Declan Gallagher, Ross Docherty and Kevin Holt were crucial in fostering the mentality that made United so hard to beat last season. All three of those have left, Glenn Middleton is also heading for pastures new. They were all key men last term. All four of them Scottish, too. Replacing them will be hard but I do hope there is a homegrown feel to the replacements coming in. It's a trend I have noticed across the division – Hibs sign an Austrian keeper, Aberdeen go for a few Australians and a German defender, Hearts are signing Norwegians, Belgians and Greeks. We'll see a mix of all nationalities in the Premiership next term. But fewer Scottish players isn't a good sign. Just look at the national team right now, there are not many players from the top flight featuring for Scotland. And we're not exactly excelling on the international front either. From Dundee United's perspective, they may feel they have to shop abroad to be able to compete again in the top six. What I hope they haven't thrown away is that ability to grind out results. I think you really need guys that know the league to help do that. Gallagher and Docherty in particular were leaders in driving the kind of mentality that pushed the Tangerines back into Europe. I was a little surprised to see Gallagher going back to the Championship with Ross County but that does show the ambition in Dingwall to come straight back up. He could have stayed in the Premiership and I've no doubt Docherty could do as well if the right offer is there. United now have to find others who can do that and that is not easy. Everything is about balance for any football manager. Last season had a good balanced squad in terms of quality, experience, youth and variety. It's going to be tough for Jim Goodwin to rebuild that this time around. But people will expect United to kick on. They overachieved last season but now fans expect improvement again. That's the nature of the game. They have set themselves such a high standard it's going to be tough to live up to it. It's a crucial, crucial summer at Tannadice.
