UCF mailbag: What grade do the Knights' offseason moves get?

Yahoo16-05-2025

The first UCF mailbag of the offseason brings questions about the transfer portal, facility updates and depth-chart questions.
What letter grade do you give UCF football in navigating the portal and constructing a roster for this upcoming season? Better yet, why that grade? — @MrEd315

C+. When Scott Frost and his coaching staff took over in mid-December, the program was expected to experience some player attrition. Coaching changes often lead to significant shifts in the offseason roster, and the Knights lost nearly 40 players to the transfer portal.
The team needed to rebuild much of its offense, particularly at quarterback, running back and wide receiver. They managed to add some new players to fill these positions. Similarly, the defense saw a complete overhaul of its linebacking group while strengthening its secondary.
While needs were filled in most cases, it was clear that the staff would not get into bidding wars over some transfer-market players.

What or when will we get a depth chart? Specifically, how do the LBs look? — @kn1ghts.bsky.social.
Frost mentioned early in spring camp that a depth chart is unlikely to be released until the end of fall camp. While the coaching staff may have some idea, an official depth chart is not expected until at least August. It wouldn't be surprising if a depth chart doesn't come out until the week leading up to the New Hampshire game.
The linebacker position is shaping up to be quite interesting this season, with several new starters entering the lineup. Veteran transfers Keli Lawson (Virginia Tech), Cole Kozlowski (Colgate) and Lewis Carter (Oklahoma) are expected to lead the first team. They will be joined by transfer Jayden McDonald (Virginia Tech) and returning players Kam Moore, TJ Bullard, Quentin Hatch and Troy Ford Jr. in the rotation. Additionally, Phil Picciotti — injured throughout the spring — and freshman Malakhi Boone could also make an impact.

What other athletic facility upgrades are coming besides the football arch and expansion? — @‪ucfguy1203.bsky.social‬.
The expansion of the Roth Tower and the Hagle Gateway projects are the only ongoing facility upgrades expected over the next year. Construction crews have already poured the support beams for the Tower, which is scheduled to be completed by the 2026 football season. UCF athletics director Terry Mohajir has said the building will be available for use this season, but construction will be evident.
The Hagle Gateway project is also moving ahead. Crews have removed the parking lot and one of the old football practice fields next to the Wayne Densch Complex to make room for the proposed Nicholson Plaza, McNamara Cove and Taylor A. Gerring Football Center.
How long do you think it will take for the Big XII money to percolate down to all sports that were more competitive than we are now? — @JAHattaway.

After two seasons of receiving only half of its Big 12 revenue, UCF, BYU, Houston and Cincinnati have already begun receiving a full share of approximately $35-$40 million. This increase in funding is expected to significantly benefit their athletics departments, which have been stretched thin while attempting to maintain competitive teams during those initial two seasons.
However, those departments must now deal with the revenue-sharing model resulting from the $2.8 billion House settlement. That initiative calls for institutions to create a $20.5 million revenue pool for their athletes starting in July. Where this money comes from is up to the discretion of the universities, with most using conference revenue.
UCF will use some of its Big 12 and fundraising revenue for this fund. The athletic department also set up the Competitive Success Fund to supplement funding.
Football is expected to receive the majority of this cap, followed by men's and women's basketball. The other sports will receive the rest. If a school like UCF chooses to invest more in sports such as baseball or softball, that only improves its chances of success.

Broncos' Sean Payton Speaks Out On JK Dobbins' Team Visit

Broncos' Sean Payton Speaks Out On JK Dobbins' Team Visit originally appeared on Athlon Sports. Despite using their second round pick to select UCF running back, RJ Harvey, there is still a feeling that the Denver Broncos' RB room could use some reinforcements. Advertisement Jaleel McLaughlin, Audric Estime and Tyler Badie are all nice complementary, auxiliary pieces, but none feel like they can be part of a hard-hitting, one-two punch with Harvey. So it makes sense that the team planned a visit with free agent, and ex Charger and Raven, JK Dobbins on Thursday. And head coach, Sean Payton, had some complementary words to say about the former AFC West rival, per Mike Klis. 'Another good football player that we've seen firsthand." Payton said to the media on Thursday, "I've seen for a while the importance of that position group. We really like the group right now we're working with, it's just another opportunity to possibly bring in another good football player to help us win.' JK Dobbins, Baltimore RavensPaul Rutherford-Imagn Image Dobbins is not necessarily an earth-shatteringly big name, but he is certainly an excellent back who would undoubtedly be on a roster right now as the RB1 - or high end 2 - if it were not for consistent injuries that have threaten to derail his otherwise potential-filled career. Advertisement Even though the former second round pick missed four games in 2024, he still managed 905 rushing yards and 9 touchdowns, with an additional 153 receiving yards off of 32 receptions. Of the backs still left unsigned in the NFL, Dobbins has arguably the best case for being a true, quality starting back in the league - and could be an excellent mentor and teammate for Harvey over the next season or two. That is, if he does end up signing with the Broncos. Newcastle Knights urged to backflip after brutal call to part ways with Origin hero

The Newcastle Knights and coach Adam O'Brien must surely be having second thoughts about the future of former State of Origin star Dane Gagai after Thursday night's stunning golden point win over Manly. The Knights came back from a 16-0 halftime deficit that saw them booed off the ground by their own fans, running in four tries to one after the break, before snatching the 26-22 win in extra time. At the heart of the epic come-from-behind victory was former Maroons star Gagai, who was arguably the best player on the field for the home side. Gagai had 10 tackle busts, three line break assists, a try assist and ran for 169 metres in Newcastle's victory, proving a handful for Manly's defence every time he touched the footy. The veteran centre has been one of the most consistent performers for the Knights over several seasons and showed his value to the Knights once again on Thursday night. But Maroons hero Gagai - who has played 22 Origin games for his state - is facing the prospect of being out of the Knights, amid reports the club is unwilling to take up his $400,000 team option for next season. Gagai has a team option to remain at the Knights in 2026 but reports that the club is unwilling to stump up the $400,000 to extend his contract. Such a figure appears more than reasonable for a player of Gagai's pedigree, who continues to punch out impressive performances as one of the NRL's most consistent centres. And for a 300-game player that only last year featured in Origin for the Maroons, it doesn't appear to make a whole lot of sense. But unless the 34-year-old is willing to take a pay cut to remain at the Hunter, it appears as though his future lies elsewhere beyond this season. Newcastle's hands are somewhat tied by salary cap constraints, with captain Kalyn Ponga on a $1.4 million per season deal and the club signing Eels playmaker Dylan Brown for next year, on a whopping 10-year, $13 million contract. Back-up halfback Jackson Hastings is also on big money but won't be at the club next season after O'Brien confirmed his contract wouldn't be extended. And the Knights are also set to lose prop Leo Thompson to the Bulldogs in 2026, with the future of English second-rower Kai Pearce-Paul also under a cloud. RELATED: Door ajar for Reece Walsh as Ponga on cusp of State of Origin ban Madge speaks on Cobbo axing as Broncos make key signing And while freeing up cap space to upgrade existing player contracts and chase other signings makes sense from a Newcastle perspective, many Knights fans believe the club should re-think its decision around Gagai. It's understood the veteran's management have already started sounding out rival NRL clubs for their interest in the veteran centre. Even if Gagai were to accept a downgrade on his current deal, the Knights are reportedly considering other options anyway, with the likes of James Schiller vying for a permanent centre role and exciting young outside back Fletcher Hunt coming through the ranks. But with Bradman Best currently sidelined and the gun centre having a chequered injury history, the Gagai decision is viewed by many fans as a head-scratcher from the Knights' top brass. Disappointing news re Gagz, still playing well enough for another 12-months imo. — Julian Vella (@vella_jay) June 5, 2025 They'll have to revisit that Gagai option after tonight! — Matt Blake (@MattyBlake1) June 5, 2025 We seem to be clearing a lot of cap space. I hope there's a plan. The Gags decision is surprising. — Duggo (@MJ_Duggos) June 5, 2025 I honestly don't understand the thought process about recruitment…we seem to want to let go of all our experienced players and leaders, gags, dsaf, Leo Thompson leaving Elliot & frizell maybe? Is this just the effects of salary cap? brown signing seems like a way to keep kp? — Irene (@IreneTheo_) June 5, 2025 Dane Gagai was heavily involved, playing a key role in the @NRLKnights come from behind win and was pretty good with the boot kicking 3/4 crucial conversions to setup a memorable Knights victory. #NRLKnightsManly #NRL — Seaside Mero (@local_navigator) June 5, 2025
