Powys: Arts programme for children secures lottery funding
The MAKE Creative Arts Programme for children in and around Presteigne, Powys, has received £19,804 in funding.
The money, from the National Lottery Community Fund, will help the Sidney Nolan Trust to continue running the programme for children aged seven to 11 years old until July 2027.
The weekly arts club, which is held on Monday afternoons during term time at the Youth Centre in Presteigne, was developed to give access to arts and creative learning for young people in Presteigne and the surrounding area.
The new funding from the National Lottery Community Fund, which distributes money raised by National Lottery players for good causes and is the largest community funder in the UK, offers important support to help sustain this well-regarded after-school programme based in the community.
Run by artists from the area, Sophie Ferrier and Olivia Mabey, the sessions give young people the chance to explore a variety of ideas and creative skills, as well as to share their artwork within the community.
Those taking part help shape the direction of the sessions, with the group having worked across drawing, printmaking, photography, animation and puppetry, among other art forms.
Antony Mottershead, curator and creative producer at the Sidney Nolan Trust, who set up the project with initial support from the Ashley Family Foundation, said: "We're proud to be enabling young people in our rural area to get hands-on through MAKE with a range of creative ideas and processes.
"We know that the arts are increasingly pushed to the margins of education and the support of the National Lottery Community Fund enables us to maintain this vibrant artist-led programme in the heart of our community.
"Alongside developing their creativity and problem-solving we also see our participants growing in confidence, social skills and aspiration."
When young people turn 11, they are encouraged to continue developing their creativity by joining the Trust's Cultivate arts programme, which is designed for those aged 11 to 18.
One of the young people said: "I have been going to the Sidney Nolan Trust for a long time now.
"I started in the MAKE group and then progressed to the Cultivate group.
"One of the sessions I really liked at MAKE was the Lino printing.
"We sketched plants and transferred the image to Lino and made prints.
"There are so many things I love about Cultivate.
"I get to meet artists and be inspired by them, and even work with them.
"At Cultivate, I get to meet people and work with materials that I can't do anywhere else.
"I live somewhere where I can't find much art to take part in.
"Cultivate helps me feel like I can be an artist."
The National Lottery Community Fund has recently introduced its new strategy, 'It starts with community', which will guide the distribution of at least £4 billion in National Lottery funding by 2030.
As part of this strategy, the funder has identified four main missions: to support communities in coming together, promote environmental sustainability, help children and young people thrive, and enable people to lead healthier lives.

You've always said you adore dancing. Was this the perfect show for you? Oh yes, dance is my biggest passion. It was the perfect show for me. I was dancing and having the time of my life and making new friends. I look back with such fond memories of the cast, Strictly really is magic. I'm so excited to see the new cast this year. Honestly, the people doing it are going to love it. They're in for a treat. There's been controversy around celebrity welfare on Strictly. How did you find it? EXCLUSIVE: Strictly Come Dancing runner-up Tasha Ghouri has revealed how she managed the discrimination she has faced over the years as she shared how the "world can be so sad and scary" Strictly Come Dancing finalist Tasha Ghouri has opened up on the "difficulties" she has faced due to "discrimination" over her disability. Tasha, who was born deaf, admitted the " world is sad and scary". Millions watched on last year as Tasha danced her way to the Strictly final alongside professional partner Aljaž Škorjanec. They went on to miss out on the coveted Glitterball trophy to eventual winners Chris McCausland and Dianne Buswell. Tasha shot to fame when the 26-year-old was selected to appear in the 2022 series of Love Island where she finished in fourth place as she walked away coupled up with her now ex-boyfriend, Andrew Le Page. Away from her time on reality TV, Tasha has leant her support to various charities as well as raising awareness for the deaf community after she herself was diagnosed with the condition after she was born. Continuing to show her support for those with serious health conditions, she was recently in attendance at the Disney Wish UK event. The event, which is a collaboration between Disney and the Make-A-Wish charity, saw her on hand to meet families at Hoar Cross Hall, Staffordshire for this years annual event that sees hundreds of children with serious illnesses get the chance to meet their favourite Disney characters. During a recent chat with the Mirror, she opened up about the discrimination she has faced in the past regarding her deafness, but admitted that it doesn't "compare" to the difficulties to that which the children at the Disney Wish event go through. She said: "Yeah, I do still face difficulties with that today, but, you know, it does not compare at all to anything to what these children go through every day." She added: "Everyone has their own difficulties with different kinds of disabilities, illnesses, but you know, these children day in day out, live in a hospital, and, you know, for Make A Wish to actually provide a day where it's all accessible, they can travel there, and they look after them." Tasha went on to share how an event of this kind can be especially important as the "world can be so sad and scary". She added: "I think it's so important to have that in the world that we live in, because the world can be so sad and scary sometimes. It's nice to have that positive light in their lives." Reflecting on her time spent with the children at Hoar Cross Hall in Staffordshire, Tasha said that it "was such a beautiful, magical day, that I look back on and feel grateful to be part of". It was announced that Tasha had split up from her boyfriend Andrew Le Page in February this year, though the reality star said she had kept the dog they shared, called Luna.
