Bursa opens higher, retreats amid profit-taking

KUALA LUMPUR : Bursa Malaysia opened higher today but retreated thereafter, driven by mild profit-taking in selected heavyweights as Wall Street continued its uptrend, analysts said.
At 9.20am, the FTSE Bursa Malaysia KLCI (FBM KLCI) eased 0.21 of-a-point to 1,539.33 from Monday's close of 1,539.54.
The benchmark index was 1.10 points better at 1,540.64 at the opening bell.
Turnover stood at 280.75 million shares worth RM104.53 million.
Market breadth was negative, with 219 decliners outnumbering 142 gainers, 300 counters were unchanged, 1,674 untraded, and 17 suspended.
Malacca Securities Sdn Bhd said that while overall sentiment on the Bursa may turn softer today, it expects buying opportunities to be seen within banking stocks as the Finance Index has risen around 10% from its April 9 low.
'Alliance Bank and Ambank could be in focus, as they have lagged behind peers despite healthy dividend yields,' it said in a note.
Meanwhile, following continuous contract wins in Johor, and with prospects of replicating this success in Penang, the research firm believed there is a trading opportunity on ITMAX amid a downtrend line breakout.
'For a more conservative play, we remain positive on KPJ, as the company has minimal exposure to US tariff risks, while its solid management and brownfield expansion should provide further price support,' it said.
Among heavyweights, Maybank and IHH Healthcare were flat at RM10 and RM7, respectively, Public Bank slipped 1.0 sen to RM4.46, CIMB declined 5.0 sen to RM7.03, while Tenaga Nasional rose 8.0 sen to RM13.88.
In active trade, Permaju earned half-a-sen to 3.5 sen, Ekovest added 1.0 sen to 34 sen, while Jiankun and Velesto were flat at 3.0 sen and 15.5 sen, respectively.

‘No loyalty, no problem': Zahid says Tengku Zafrul's exit won't spark tensions in Umno

LONDON, June 3 — The decision by the Minister of Investment, Trade and Industry Datuk Seri Tengku Zafrul Abdul Aziz to quit Umno has not disrupted or raised tension within the party, according to Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi. The Deputy Prime Minister, who is also the Umno President, stated that most grassroots members view Tengku Zafrul's resignation from the party as appropriate given his lack of loyalty to Umno. 'I don't see any indication of 'temperature rising' within Umno. It's better for him to leave if there is no loyalty to the party. Don't disturb him because he is currently performing the Hajj, hopefully, peace will surround his mind,' he said. He made these remarks during a press conference after chairing a pre-meeting with the Malaysian delegation in conjunction with his four-day working visit to the United Kingdom, which began yesterday. Last Friday, Tengku Zafrul announced via a Facebook post that he had submitted his resignation from Umno to join PKR. Meanwhile, addressing the question of a cabinet reshuffle if Tengku Zafrul's position as Minister of Investment, Trade and Industry needs to be replaced, Ahmad Zahid said discussions on the matter should be held internally within the Unity Government. 'The absolute right to appoint ministers rests with the Prime Minister (Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim), and in this matter, it is better for us to hold internal discussions to avoid various interpretations,' he said. Earlier, Ahmad Zahid was reported to have said that Umno wants its quota of seven full ministers in the Federal Cabinet to be restored to the party following Tengku Zafrul's action. — Bernama

Look to blue chips as Bursa nears key support: Analyst

KUALA LUMPUR: Investors should consider accumulating blue-chip stocks, particularly in the banking and telecommunications sectors, as Bursa Malaysia edges closer to the psychological support level of 1,500, said Rakuten Trade. In its daily market note, the brokerage said renewed foreign fund outflows had pushed the benchmark index down 0.70 per cent or 10.63 points to close at 1,508.35 last Friday, with sentiment remaining fragile. "Notwithstanding recent sell-offs, we would advocate investors to accumulate on the blue chips, namely the banks and telecommunications (telcos), if and when the index dips below the 1,500 mark," it said. According to the firm, trading activity remained cautious, with 524 decliners outpacing 306 gainers. Total volume stood at 3.21 billion shares worth RM5.04 billion. Sector-wise, losses were led by telcos, down 2.5 per cent, consumer down 1.6 per cent and technology down 1.2 per cent, while transportation rose 0.9 per cent and real estate investment trusts added 0.1 per cent Rakuten Trade expects the FTSE Bursa Malaysia KLCI to trade within the 1,500 to 1,510 range today amid persistent global uncertainties and the absence of strong domestic catalysts. Overnight, Wall Street closed higher despite renewed US-China trade tensions. The Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 0.08 per cent, while the Nasdaq and S&P 500 added 0.67 per cent and 0.41 per cent respectively. Regional markets, however, closed mostly lower, with Hong Kong's Hang Seng Index down 1.20 per cent and Japan's Nikkei 225 falling 1.22 per cent. On the corporate front, Yinson Holdings Bhd posted a 66.1 per cent jump in full-year net profit to RM1.25 billion, lifted by a tax gain on its Netherlands offshore operations. Capital A Bhd returned to profitability with a net profit of RM689.6 million in the first quarter, reversing a RM91.5 million loss a year earlier, supported by gains across travel, logistics and other services. CIMB Group Holdings Bhd reported a 1.9 per cent rise in first-quarter net profit to RM1.97 billion, while Mah Sing Group Bhd saw earnings increase 10 per cent to RM66 million.
