Berri blames US not Israel for ongoing ceasefire violations
Parliament Speaker Nabih Berri linked Friday the Israeli escalation in south Lebanon to the push for normalizing relations between Israel and the Arab world, days after U.S. President Donald Trump said Syria's president backed normalization with Israel in the future.
Trump had said after meeting the Syrian interim President that Ahmad al-Sharaa backed normalization with Israel in the future but "they have a lot of work to do". The meeting took place in Riyadh on Wednesday, a day after Trump announced he was lifting sanctions on the war-battered country.
"Syria is definitely on the path of joining the Abraham Accords," Berri told Asas Media, as he blamed the United States for the Israeli violations.
"We have signed a ceasefire deal with the U.S. and not with Israel," Berri said. "The Americans are supposed to compel Israel to implement the deal, if they really want a ceasefire," he added.
Israel has continued to launch strikes on Lebanon despite the November 27 truce which sought to halt more than a year of hostilities with Hezbollah including, two months of full-blown war.
Israel's military said Thursday it killed a Hezbollah militant in a strike on south Lebanon, on the Arnoun–Yahmor road. On Wednesday, Israel said it struck and killed a "Hezbollah commander of the Qabrikha area", also in the south.
Under the deal, Hezbollah was to pull back its fighters north of the Litani River and dismantle any remaining military infrastructure to its south. Israel was to withdraw all its forces from Lebanon, but it has kept troops in five areas that it deems "strategic".
Lebanon says it has respected its ceasefire commitments and has called on the international community to pressure Israel to end its attacks and withdraw all of its troops.

The Israeli army revealed details on Wednesday about what it described as an Iranian mechanism for transferring funds to Hezbollah, announcing the killing of a Lebanese currency exchanger linked to the group. Israeli army spokesperson Avichay Adraee shared on X, outlining a series of Israeli strikes targeting Hezbollah's financial infrastructure. "Yesterday, Israeli Air Force jets, guided by precise intelligence, carried out a strike in southern Lebanon, eliminating Haitham Abdullah Bakri, head of the 'Al-Sadiq' currency exchange network," Adraee wrote. "Bakri knowingly collaborated with Hezbollah to transfer funds in support of its terrorist activities." According to the Israeli military, the Al-Sadiq network was used as an infrastructure for storing and transferring funds to finance Hezbollah's military operations. 'The Al-Sadiq network serves as a financial pipeline, operated under the guidance and funding of Iran's Quds Force,' Adraee stated. 'These funds are used for military purposes, including the acquisition of weapons, manufacturing equipment, and paying salaries to operatives, in addition to financing terror operations and sustaining Hezbollah's broader terrorist activity,' he added. Adraee also confirmed that last weekend, the Israeli army killed Behnam Shahriari, commander of Unit 190 of Iran's Quds Force. "He exclusively oversaw the transfer of hundreds of millions of dollars annually to the Quds Force and its affiliates," Adraee posted. 'These financial transfers included routes involving exchange offices in Turkey, Iraq, and the UAE, connected to Lebanese networks. It will be the first meeting under the chairmanship of U.S. Major General Michael Leeney, who has succeeded U.S. Major General Jasper Jeffers as the head of the committee, the daily noted. 'The committee's resumption of its meetings is supposed to reflect a new U.S. performance that is less aggressive and less biased in Israel's favor, contrary to the term of Jeffers and his superior, former special envoy Morgan Ortagus,' al-Akhbar said.
