Jasper County voters can expect an unusual ballot this April; Here's why

CARTHAGE, Mo. — On April 8, voters will head to the polls to decide the outcome of several municipal elections. But for some elections, choices will be limited.
County Clerk Charlie Davis says four Jasper County races won't have a candidate listed on the ballot.
That's because no one filed for the office.
Those races include city aldermen in Duenweg and Waco, a city council seat in Carterville, and Purcell city collector.

When that happens, the county clerk's office then turns to the 'write-in' portion of the ballot.
Each name written on the ballot will then be tabulated, and the person with the most write-ins will be the winner.
Davis says that can become a time-consuming process.
'I'm glad that we don't have a full, state-wide race that had an open position, like the 9-1-1 board had last year, where we had over 460 names written in, and we actually had to write all of those names down and put them into the computer system and tally them. At least these are smaller towns,' said Davis.
In the event no names are written in, it will then be up to the individual city councils to appoint a person to fill the open seat.

Roughly 1,100 applications submitted by former federal workers amid Austin hiring campaign

AUSTIN (KXAN) — President Donald Trump's promise to cut federal workforce is starting to show in the latest jobs report from the U.S. Department of Labor, which indicated 22,000 fewer federal government jobs in the last month alone. In response to the president's letting go of some federal workforce, the city of Austin re-launched a recruitment effort its used in the past called the Get Hired campaign — this time aimed at those federal workers. 'We value public servants': Austin targeting federal staff let go by Trump administration The city said between March 21 and May 23, the duration of that campaign, the city received roughly 1,100 applications from former federal employees. Of those folks, 30 now work for the city, according to the city's human resource director, Susan Sinz. 'It is good to see that with that previous federal experience, how much we benefit from that….they understand customer service, I think they understand citizen engagement and they really understand how to be a servant leader and in our community that's what we're looking for,' Sinz said. On average, the city has 100 vacancies at any given time, though that includes everything — lifeguards, librarians, police officers — and those vacancies fluctuate greatly based on season. The city employs roughly 17,000 people, Sinz noted. Though that program targeting federal employees wrapped up late last month, Sinz hopes those folks will continue to keep their sights set on our city. 'We are excited to have them explore employment here at the city of Austin and really wish them a super long career here,' she said. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. Connecticut-Puerto Rico trade commission established

BRIDGEPORT, Conn. (WTNH) — The Governor signed an act Friday establishing a Connecticut-Puerto Rico trade commission. Connecticut-Puerto Rico trade commission established Lamont chose Bridgeport as the place he would sign the act because it has the highest Puerto Rican population per capita in our state. Many celebrated along Bridgeport's waterfront, where new construction and established businesses line the harbor. The trade commission is said to add and build on the many relationships that already exist between the state and the island, with trade expected to expand in both directions. 'Not just large companies we're talking about mom and pop businesses in Puerto Rico that are eager to sell their products here in Connecticut because of our growing population,' Rep. Chris Rosario (D) from Bridgeport said. Establishing the trade commission received unanimous bipartisan support in the state legislature. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved.
