Lebanese Druze Leader Wiam Wahhab: Who Else Will Protect Us Druze Besides the Israelis? We Supported the Sunni Muslim Brotherhood in Palestine, Only to Be Slaughtered by Them in Syria

Memri24-03-2025

Lebanese Druze leader Wiam Wahhab discussed Israel's intervention on behalf of the Druze in Syria, during an interview with Roula Nasr on March 12, 2025. He argued that no one else would protect the Druze but the Israelis, questioning whether they are expected to be slaughtered. Wahhab expressed support for Arab nations and Sunnis but criticized countries like Egypt, Saudi Arabia, the UAE, and Al-Azhar University for not protecting the Druze despite their previous support. He also stressed that Hizbullah cannot continue supporting the Sunni Muslim Brotherhood, particularly Hamas, without assurances that Sunnis will not persecute Shiites and Druze. Wahhab pointed out Hizbullah's sacrifices for the Sunni cause in Palestine, only to have the Sunnis turn against them later in Syria, and questioned whether the Shiites and Druze are expected to liberate Palestine, only to face persecution afterward. He further criticized Hizbullah's alliance with the Muslim Brotherhood, emphasizing that the only significant movement in the Sunni world is the Muslim Brotherhood, with groups like HTS being rooted in it. Wahhab argued that with many moderate Sunni countries, it remains unclear why Hizbullah continues to align with the Brotherhood or Iran.

Al-Sudani's visit to Al-Anbar: Political and developmental messages

Shafaq News/ Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani paid a visit to Al-Anbar province, in what political observers and local sources described as a gesture loaded with messages of support, balance, and national development. Al-Sudani arrived in Al-Anbar earlier on Sunday, where he met with several tribal leaders at the start of his tour. Although not part of an official government agenda, the visit was closely watched by political actors in the province. Sources from Al-Anbar told Shafaq News that the visit had been planned for over a month but was postponed due to a prior trip by a senior figure within the Coordination Framework, the leader of the Wisdom Movement (Al-HiKma) Ammar al-Hakim. The delay aimed to avoid framing the prime minister's visit as politically or electorally motivated. One source stated that the meeting with tribal sheikhs was intended as a 'friendly and direct' interaction, signaling support for local efforts to maintain stability and prevent Al-Anbar from becoming aligned with any single political faction. 'This is about preserving balance—particularly ahead of elections on November,' the source noted. Separately, a member of Al-Anbar's Provincial Council told Shafaq News that the visit did not adhere to formal institutional procedures. 'The provincial flag was not raised during the visit, which indicates that it was not part of coordinated efforts with the council,' the official said. Moreover, the prime minister's decision to meet with figures known for their public criticism of the local government—such as Hamid al-Hayis and Arkan al-Tarmouz—was interpreted as a sign of his intention to recalibrate political dynamics within the province. Both men have recently directed sharp criticisms and direct appeals to the prime minister regarding the performance of Al-Anbar's local administration. 'The meetings seem to align with their recent statements, and the move has sparked questions among local observers, particularly due to the exclusion of elected bodies from the visit,' the source added. Al-Sudani's visit—though unofficial—comes at a pivotal time for Al-Anbar, one of Iraq's most strategically important provinces. With 15 parliamentary seats, Al-Anbar is a Sunni-majority region that plays a key role in shaping national politics. In the 2021 elections, the Taqadum Alliance, led by former Parliament Speaker Mohammed al-Halbousi, secured a dominant position with 11 seats. Notably, however, two seats were won by independents. This independent presence may offer potential avenues for cooperation, especially as the Iraqi Prime Minister has not, to date, aligned himself with any specific political alliance in the province.

Lebanese Activist Eli Khoury calls for 'De-Resistance-ation' in Lebanon, Like Post WWII Denazification in Germany: Hizbullah's Ideology Needs to Be Removed from People's Minds

In a May 27, 2025 interview on Spot Shot on YouTube, Lebanese activist and social media expert Eli Khoury compared the situation of Hizbullah to that of the Nazi Party in Germany. He said that after Nazism was shown to be deadly and harmful to society, it became necessary to engage in 'denazification' - the removal of the ideology from people's minds. He suggested that a similar process should be undertaken with Hizbullah. Khoury argued that Hizbullah's ideology is not native to Lebanon, but rather imported from a country he does not consider important. He proposed calling the process 'de-resistance-ation.'

Hizbullah-Affiliated Academic Sadek Al-Naboulsi: Disarming Hizbullah Would Lead to Civil War – Anyone Calling fHizbullah-Affiliated Academic Sadek Al-Naboulsi: Disarming Hizbullah Would Lead to Civil

Hizbullah-affiliated Lebanese academic Sadek Al-Naboulsi categorically rejected Hizbullah's disarmament in a May 29, 2025 interview on Spot Shot (YouTube). He said that disarming Hizbullah would lead to civil war in Lebanon, and asked whether those calling for this are prepared to sacrifice the blood of their children and people for the sake of Israel and America. Al-Naboulsi said that anyone supporting such calls is 'burning' Lebanon and leading it toward a 'holocaust,' insisting that such change would come through bloodshed. He also questioned why there is talk only of disarming Hizbullah and not Israel, which he called an 'illegal, deadly, and barbaric country.' He asked: 'Why do you want to disarm the most noble resistance movement in the region, but you do not say a single word about the need to disarm Israel?'
