Rabbi Yehiel Poupko: A Jewish appreciation of Pope Francis

On Sept. 11, 2014, at the annual meeting of the Jewish Federation of Chicago, Cardinal Francis George told the audience: 'Before I went to the Conclave of the College of Cardinals this past February to elect a successor to Pope Benedict XVI, I asked Rabbi Poupko, 'What would the Jewish community like to see in the next pope?' He answered: 'We need a pope who knows us.''
This is who was elected pope. As archbishop of Buenos Aires, then-Cardinal Jorge Mario Bergoglio attended Rosh Hashanah services at the Benei Tikva synagogue in September 2007. Bergoglio told the congregation that he was there 'like a pilgrim, together with you, my elder brothers.'
In 2010, Rabbi Abraham Skorka and Bergoglio began memorializing their two decades of conversation in a book. Friends since 1990, the two had much to share. In the introduction to the book they co-wrote, 'On Heaven and Earth,' Francis described their friendship: 'With Rabbi Skorka I never had to compromise my Catholic identity, just like he never had to with his Jewish identity.'
The Jewish people have good memories of Francis. One of the gestures of Francis' friendship with the Jewish people came early in his papacy. In 2013, in a letter to journalist Eugenio Scalfari in the Italian newspaper la Repubblica, Francis responded to the question: 'What we should say to our Jewish brothers about the promise made to them by God: Has it all come to nothing?'
'This question, believe me, is a radical one for us Christians because with the help of God, especially in the light of the Second Vatican Council, we have rediscovered that the Jewish people remain for us the holy root from which Jesus was born. I too have cultivated many friendships through the years with my Jewish brothers in Argentina and often while in prayer, as my mind turned to the terrible experience of the Shoah, I looked to God,' he wrote.
'God has never neglected his faithfulness to the covenant with Israel, and that, through the awful trials of these last centuries, the Jews have preserved their faith in God. And for this, we, the Church and the whole human family, can never be sufficiently grateful to them.'
As the Germans murdered 6 million Jews, most of Christendom collaborated actively or passively with Nazism. In that time, the Jewish people gave witness to the one God. We alone were the sole sacred witness to the one God. Francis deepened that because he did not limit admiration and respect for Jewish witness to the period of the Shoah. He refers to 'the terrible trials of these centuries' in which 'the Jews have kept their faith in God.' He refers to the torment inflicted upon us by the Catholic Church and the Reformation churches throughout the ages. He affirms that the church and all of humanity will 'never be sufficiently grateful to them.' The pope affirms that Israel provided unique witness to the one God; that this unique witness came despite all the torment; and that Israel's faithfulness to the one God is a gift both to the church and to humanity. This is a remarkable affirmation of Judaism and the Jewish people.
People do not often pay enough attention to performance theology. Instead of issuing formal statements and teachings in well-reasoned theological papers, occasionally a pope will act out, will express in behavior, a religious idea.
In an act of performance theology while in Israel in 2014, Francis visited the grave of Theodor Herzl, the founder of Zionism, the Jewish national liberation movement.
The honor paid Herzl at his last resting place is compelling. One hundred and 10 years earlier, on Jan. 26, 1904, Herzl had an audience with Pope Pius X. Herzl sought the pope's support for Zionism. The pope replied, 'We cannot give approval to this movement. We cannot prevent the Jews from going to Jerusalem — but we could never sanction it. The soil of Jerusalem … has been sanctified by the life of Jesus Christ. As the Head of the Church, I cannot tell you anything different. The Jews have not recognized our Lord, therefore we cannot recognize the Jewish people.'
Pius X established what was the popular and official Christian attitude to Zionism and the establishment of the state of Israel. Christian theology has had a difficult time accounting for the Jewish return to the ancient homeland.
Francis' act of honor and respect to Herzl and to Zionism demonstrated that the Roman Catholic Church no longer holds any theological objection to the Jewish return to sovereignty in the ancient homeland.
In every relationship, there are disappointments. It is because of Francis' friendship extended to the Jewish people that several of his statements on Israel's war to prevent Hamas from annihilating Israel were received with pain.
The Jewish people will remember that as the sun set on Passover, Francis departed this life. He left behind the great Passover legacy, to ever seek freedom from slavery; to ever fulfill the mitzvah (commandment) to take care of the poor and the stranger.
In these days following his passing, we know that his abiding friendship for us will never be forgotten. Judaism holds that good deeds will ever endure. This is his gift and legacy.

House Speaker Mike Johnson praised Musk during most of his time speaking, saying the Tesla boss had done 'extraordinary' work finding needless government spending while leading DOGE. Musk, Johnson noted, was inside the 'belly of the beast' that is the U.S. government and helped shine a light on waste that was 'unknowable until now.' Still, Johnson also said President Trump was 'not delighted that Elon did a 180' on the bill. His comments came after Musk on Tuesday blasted the 'pork-filled' bill as a 'disgusting abomination.' The speaker's comments also stand out, considering White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt said on Tuesday the president had shrugged off Musk's criticism of the bill. 'The president already knows where Elon Musk stood on this bill, it doesn't change the president's opinion,' she said. Johnson on Wednesday said DOGE was 'the beginning of making government more efficient' and that it is 'going to take us a while' to make all the cuts Musk wants to see, considering it took decades for the deficit to reach the point it is at. He also said he called Musk on Tuesday night and was unable to reach him, but was hoping to the two would speak today. The 'One Big Beautiful Bill' passed the House last month and has moved to the Senate for consideration. Also on Wednesday, an analysis from the nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office noted the same bill could add $2.4 trillion to the nation's debt. GOP leaders then ripped Democrats and the Biden Administration for doing nothing to curb illegal immigration at several points on Wednesday morning. Rep. Lisa McClain of Michigan said the Biden Administration's 'open border policies' paved the way for the attack against Jews in Colorado last weekend while rallying for the release of hostages held by Hamas. The suspect, Mohamed Sabry Soliman, was seen on video yelling 'we have to end Zionists' in a video that went viral on X. The Egyptian national was in the country illegally, Fox News reported; Soliman entered the U.S. in 2022 and his work permit to remain in the country expired in March. 'I mean, honestly, what's next? Is a Democrat going to fly to Boulder to visit the illegal who burned Jews alive? Is that what's next for the Democratic Party?' McClain said on Wednesday. 'The contrast between Republicans and Democrats couldn't be more clear.' Shen also said more terrorist attacks could occur because of the 'tens of millions' of people who are in the country illegally thanks to Biden. Johnson then said one main reason the bill needs to pass the Senate is because it 'includes $45 billion to expand ICE detention capacity.' Record number of anti-Semitic attacks recorded in Germany in 2024

Anti-Semitic incidents in Germany were up by 77% in 2024 compared to the previous year, according to figures published by a monitoring organization on Wednesday, with the increase being partially attributed to the ongoing war in Gaza and the far right. "Never before have we been aware of more attacks against Jews in a calendar year than in the past year," said Benjamin Steinitz, managing director of the Federal Association of Departments for Research and Information on Antisemitism (RIAS). The 2024 report details 8,627 anti-Semitic incidents, including eight cases of extreme violence, 186 attacks, 443 cases of property damage and 300 cases involving threats. Cases classified as "offensive behaviour" were reported most frequently with 7,541 incidents, including 1,802 cases recorded at public gatherings. The latter category defined incidents as anti-Semitic based on the content of speeches or other material used as calls to action. A total of 544 cases were attributed to right-wing extremist views, a record since RIAS began documenting cases nationwide in 2020. Meanwhile, 5,857 cases were classified as "anti-Semitism related to Israel" - meaning incidents in which Jews living in Germany are held responsible for the actions of the Israeli government, or where Israel's right to exist is disputed. The figure was more than twice as many as recorded in 2023. Steinitz stressed that the category did not include cases of mere criticism of the Israeli government. The rise in anti-Semitic attacks since the October 7 attacks in Israel recorded by RIAS, which documents cases reported by victims or eyewitnesses, is also reflected in official data. However, a recently published report by the German-Israeli journalist Itay Mashiach on behalf of the Diaspora Alliance, an organization that fights anti-Semitism, accuses RIAS of "opaque methods," criticizing it for overemphasizing "Israel-related anti-Semitism." RIAS recorded a total of 450 anti-Semitic incidents at universities last year, followed by 284 at schools, including 19 attacks. Steinitz described the Hamas-led attacks on Israel in October 2023, which triggered Israel's devastating military campaign in the Gaza Strip, as a turning point. "The risk of being attacked as a Jew in Germany has objectively increased since October 7," he said. Among the cases of extreme anti-Semitic violence recorded by RIAS last year is that of a Jewish student who was attacked by a fellow student outside a bar in Berlin. In the same category, the association also included a terrorist attack on a city festival in the western city of Solingen, which left three dead, as well as an attack by a suspected Islamist on the Israeli consulate general in Munich. Among the 186 registered attacks was the case of a Jewish pupil who was held by two men on her way to school who called her a "dirty Jew." In another incident in a park in the eastern city of Leipzig, 10 to 15 right-wing extremists attacked three men who had been talking about anti-Semitism. Among the cases of property damages, 50 incidents were recorded in residential areas. In March 2024, unknown perpetrators daubed two swastikas next to the front door of the home of a Jewish couple in Hamburg, while in April, a Star of David was smeared onto the house of a Jewish person living in Leipzig. Steinitz rejected the accusations levelled against the association, and the German government's anti-Semitism commissioner Felix Klein said he has "great confidence in the work of RIAS." Klein described the new figures as shocking and stressed the need for the fight against anti-Semitism to become "even more focused, intensive and successful." Cooperation with states, municipalities, associations, organizations and individuals is necessary "so that we can ideally see the numbers of anti-Semitic incidents fall again as soon as possible."

Federal lawmakers stood in tribute for Sarah Milgrim, who grew up in Prairie Village, Kansas, and her partner, Yaron Lischinsky. Both were staff members at the Israeli embassy. They were fatally shot May 21 by a Chicago man who reportedly yelled 'free Palestine' while handcuffed and has been charged with first-degree murder. U.S. Rep. Sharice Davids, a Kansas Democrat who represents the community where Milgrim was raised, said the couple were 'tragically and senselessly killed in an antisemitic attack.' 'This hateful and targeted violence is not only heartbreaking, it is unacceptable,' she said. 'Antisemitism has no place in our country, and yet we are seeing a deeply disturbing rise in these acts of hate.' Davids said Milgrim was a member of Congregation B'nai Jehudah and that Milgrim and Lischinsky were committed to building understanding and connection between Israel and the United States. 'To the Jewish community in Kansas, Colorado and across the nation,' Davids said, 'please know that I am standing with you. We mourn with you. We recommit to creating a world where no one fears for their safety because of who they are.' Davids offered her thoughts Tuesday in collaboration with a group of representatives, including Kansas Republican U.S. Reps. Tracey Mann and Derek Schmidt. Milgrim was a 2017 graduate of Shawnee Mission East High School and earned a degree in 2021 from the University of Kansas. Her funeral service was May 27 at a synagogue in Overland Park, Kansas.
