The Springbok Women's poor ball retention almost came back to bite them as they survived a late onslaught to hold off the Kenya Lionesses 19-12 in their Rugby Africa Women's Cup clash at the Stade Makis in Antananarivo, Madagascar on Wednesday.
The South Africans – who thrashed Uganda 62-7 in their tournament opener – were dominant in the opening 40 minutes, but could only muster 12 points from two tries and a conversion.
The Bok Women, who are using the tournament as preparation for the World Cup in September, got stuck into the Kenyans from the start.
The forwards, with the likes of tighthead prop Nombuyekezo Mdliki, captain and lock Anathi Qolo and hooker Luchell Hanekom prominent, made serious inroads on attack with their strong carries, and they were backed up by backs such as wing Patience Mokone and fullback Byrhandré Dolf.
But the Bok Women battled to finish off a number of attacking moves, with their handling letting them down as they either lost possession or conceded breakdown turnover or penalty at crucial times inside the Kenyan 22.
That trend continued in the second half, and despite enjoying a healthy advantage in the scrums and playing with great physicality, SA were met with courageous defence by the determined Kenyans.
The Bok Women started off well enough, with powerful centre Aphiwe Ngwevu charging over from close range after a clever inside pass from flyhalf Mary Zulu.
But the South Africans had to wait until the 35th minute to add to their tally, when red-haired wing Mokone's dazzling run was finished off by flank Lerato Makua.

The defending champions never looked in any danger of losing the game despite their frustrating time on attack, and replacement loose forward Nobuhle Mjwara's touchdown with less than 15 minutes to go seemed to seal the victory.
But Kenya never gave up, and two late tries led to a thrilling finish.
Wing Freshia Awino got the East Africans on the scoreboard with good pace down the left flank, and a few minutes later, replacement prop Noleen Khaleyi dived over after a stunning counter-attack from inside their own half.
Suddenly it was 19-12 with five minutes to go, and the South Africans looked like they had lost their grip on the encounter.
But the Bok Women managed to close out the game without any further drama.
Assistant coaches Bafana Nhleko and Franzel September – who are managing the team in this event in the absence of head coach Swys de Bruin – will hope to see the players be much more decisive with ball-in-hand in their third match against hosts Madagascar on Sunday (2pm SA time start) in what is sure to be in front of a partisan home crowd.
Points-Scorers
Springbok Women 19 – Tries: Aphiwe Ngwevu, Lerato Makua, Nobuhle Mjwara. Conversions: Mary Zulu (2).
Kenya Lionesses 12 – Tries: Freshia Awino, Noleen Khaleyi. Conversion: Sinaida Nyachio (1).

Ntokozo Makhaza: I got a call from an unknown number
Ntokozo Makhaza stands on the brink of history, after receiving a maiden Springbok call up last week. Makhaza first made headlines when he was first named in the second alignment camp squad by Springbok coach Rassie Erasmus. Often known for his 'genius' rugby ideas and strategies, Erasmus pulled another one out of the hat with Makhaza. The 2x World Cup winning mentor had done something similar before. This time last year, he called up former NWU Pukke Varsity Cup winning captain Sampie Swiegers . Starring at what was looking like a brewing tighthead prop crisis, Eramsus turned to the burly star for cover. But in the end, it was just for cover. But with Makhaza, while many were expecting a similar situation, it proved different. Speaking to Newzroom Afrika 's Yolulwe Qoshe in Durban, he describes how he found out about his Springbok alignment camp call. 'I think I was overjoyed. I obviously, initially got the text from my coach, like two days before we won the Varsity Cup (with UCT Ikeys). Him telling me that, Rassie Erasmus asked for my number, at first I thought he was joking. Only for him to say no, he is being honest and telling the truth. And then from then on I was just overjoyed. I think everyday for a month after that, I was expecting that call from him, which I didn't get.' Makhaza recalls. Makhaza then remembers the moment things seemed to change in his favour, with that Springbok call finally coming! ' Until this one morning, I got a call from an unknown number, picked it up and it was Rassie (Erasmus). In that moment, I don't remember half the conversation, I was just overjoyed! But it's also very inspiring, to have someone like him looking at Varsity rugby, a 2x World Cup winner. Sees something in me' Makhaza continued. Makhaza relieves the moment he walked into the alignment camp, wearing the same Springbok tracksuit as some World Cup winners. ' I felt humbled and honoured I was like, 'is this really me? Being in the presence of all these players who have made a name for themselves in rugby. World Cup winners like Siya Kolisi. I mean, I even remember the people I was sitting around. In front of me was (Damian) Willemse, to his right was Kolisi, to his right was (Eben) Etzebeth, behind me was (Lukhanyo) Am, (Aphelele) Fassi, Ox Nche and Bongi Mbonambi' recalled Makhaza about being in the presence of experienced Springboks. 'In that moment I tried to pinch myself, I look down, I was wearing a Springbok top and I was like, is this really me, being in this environment. But it was a very welcoming experience. I never felt left out in anyway. That's just credit to the culture that they have and it made me want to be a part of it more' Makhaza continued. The 23-year-old Bethlehem-born star could be set for a historic feat. This by becoming the first player to be capped by the Springboks before playing a professional game. Makhaza says achieving that would mean the world to himself and his family. 'It would probably feel unreal at that moment but, it would be a testament to what people have done for me. The support that they've given me, my parents, my coaches, teammates, teachers and all my mentors along the way. So if I was to ever make that team it would be testament to their hard work, not just mine.' He concluded. Watch the video below: Makhaza's first opportunity for a Springbok debut will be against the Barbarians on the 28th of June. Matheus Cunha completes 'dream' Manchester United move
Dream come true Manchester United have announced that they have completed the deal to sign Brazil international Matheus Cunha from Wolverhampton Wanderers after meeting his £62.5 million buyout clause. Photo: Justin Tallis/AFP Image: Justin Tallis/AFP Matheus Cunha said he had "dreamed of wearing the red shirt" of Manchester United after the club confirmed his signing from Wolves on Thursday. United effectively sealed the deal, which was subject to the completion of a visa and medical, on June 1 after activating a £62.5 million ($85 million) release clause in the 26-year old's contract. "It is hard to put into words my feelings about becoming a Manchester United player," said the Brazil international, who has signed a five-year deal with the option of another year. "Ever since I was a child in Brazil watching Premier League games on TV at my grandmother's house, United was my favourite English team and I dreamed of wearing the red shirt. Get your news on the go, click here to join the IOL News WhatsApp channel. "I want to thank my family and everyone who has helped me make that dream a reality. "I can't wait for the start of pre-season to get to know my teammates and prepare for the season ahead. "All my focus is now on working hard to become a valuable part of the team, and helping get this club back to the top." Cunha scored 17 goals in all competitions for Wolves last season, winning the Premier League club's players' player of the year award. He became Ruben Amorim's first signing of the summer transfer window as the head coach sets about overhauling his squad after a miserable domestic campaign and a lacklustre Europa League final defeat to Tottenham. Cunha will add his predatory instincts and creative guile to a United attack that struggled throughout this season. The striker helped his country qualify for the World Cup on Tuesday when he set up the only goal for Vinicius Junior in a 1-0 win over Paraguay. United's director of football Jason Wilcox said: "Bringing in Matheus was one of our main priorities for this summer, so we are delighted to have completed his signing so early in the window. "He has all the qualities we are looking for as we seek to build a strong, dynamic and entertaining team capable of challenging for the biggest honours." Brentford forward Bryan Mbeumo has also been linked with a move to United, whose transfer business has been made harder by their failure to qualify for the Champions League. Perfect Cummins flattens Proteas
Kagiso Rabada picked up two wickets minutes before lunch to keep South Africa's hopes aflicker after a devastating spell from Australian captain Pat Cummins put his side in the ascendancy on the second day of the World Test Championship final. As he did in the first innings, the spearhead of the Proteas attack dismissed Usman Khawaja and Cameron Green in one over to put smiles on his teammates' faces. Australia went to tea on 32/2, a lead of 106 runs, with Marnus Labuschage on 16 and Steve Smith on 4. South Africa will need a lot more magic in the final session on Thursday if they are to narrow the gap to the Australians, for whom Cummins was magnificent as the spearhead of the effort that saw the Proteas bowled out for a miserable 138. The mission will be different for South Africa and Australia after the tea break 🇿🇦🇦🇺 📺 Stream #WTC25 on DStv: — SuperSport 🏆 (@SuperSportTV) June 12, 2025 He was like a pin that poked the Proteas' lunchtime balloon. The South Africans had felt good about themselves at the interval after scoring 78 runs in the first session and showing greater intent with the bat than they had on the first evening. Two elegant boundaries from David Bedingham in the final over put smiles on faces, but Cummins turned those to frowns with his burst after the break. It was the former Australian rugby captain John Eales who was given the moniker 'Nobody' because 'nobody's perfect', and it would have served as an appropriate nickname for Cummins too. He didn't make a mistake with the ball on Thursday, overwhelming the Proteas, to give his side what looks like a match-winning advantage. The cocaine, the suspension are in the past — this, the cricket, is what Rabada knows 'Hopefully we can score some runs,' Proteas ace says after gutting Australia but being let down by top order. Sport 12 hours ago Cummins trapped Kyle Verreynne lbw for 13, a decision that had to be sent to the TV official, after Chris Gaffney — who's been having a running battle with DRS in this match — kept his hands by his side. The Australian captain had the wherewithal to go to the third umpire even though he was smashed in the back by Verreynne who was trying to pick up a single. But nothing the South Africans did could keep Cummins down. Marco Jansen lasted three balls and chipped a delivery straight back to the bowler, while Bedingham, who top scored with 45, was the victim of a gem of delivery that was angled into him and then straightened off the surface, the ball glancing the edge of his bat giving Alex Carey a simple catch. That gave Cummins five for the innings, and his sixth wicket, saw him become the eighth Australian to pick up 300 Test wickets. 'It's way more than I could have asked for,' Cummins told the TV broadcaster. '300 is a big number for any fast bowler, it means you've come through a few things.' His post-lunch spell read 4.1—1-4-4 and saw him finish with 6/28, the kind of performance that, coupled with his display in the 50-over World Cup final against India two years ago, will only strengthen the argument that he belongs among the greats of the game in his own country.
