The 26-year-old quarterback also threw one interception on a warm, hazy night as prairie wildfire smoke drifted into Quebec on Friday.

Veteran QB Nick Arbuckle, last year's unexpected Grey Cup MVP, threw for one touchdown, two interceptions and 273 yards on 20-for-32 completions for Toronto (0-1). The Argonauts lineup featured 13 different starters compared to last year's championship game.

Toronto also started a second consecutive season without starting QB Chad Kelly, who broke his tibia and fibula late in last year's East final.
Montreal kicker Jose Maltos went 2-for-3 with a rouge. Toronto's Lirim Hajrullahu went 1-for-1 on a 45-yard field goal.

Montreal took a 15-3 lead heading into halftime when Adeyemi-Berglund returned a fumble 17 yards into the end zone after Shawn Oakman laid out Arbuckle with 32 seconds left in the second quarter.

The play stood after review — instead of being ruled an incomplete pass — despite the fact Arbuckle released the ball before Oakman's hit. The league ruled that Arbuckle did not have a throwing motion before the ball left his hands.

Things only got worse for the Argos as James Letcher Jr. returned a kickoff 67 yards to open the second half.

Alexander then ran 12 yards and completed three passes to set up Evans' one-yard QB sneak into the end zone as the Alouettes took a 22-3 lead 4:29 into the half.
Article content
Derek Slywka intercepted Alexander's deep pass with five minutes remaining in the third quarter for his first pick in the CFL.
Article content
Alexander appeared to injure himself late in the third quarter when a Toronto defensive lineman fell on his legs. He rolled round on the field, holding his left knee in pain, but ultimately stood up on his own and returned to play on the next drive.

Calgary Stampeders set to start new CFL season with Vernon Adams Jr. at QB
The road back to the CFL playoffs goes through Vernon Adams Jr. in Calgary. The Stampeders acquired the quarterback from the B.C. Lions a month after their worst season in two decades concluded in 2024. Calgary finished last in the CFL with a 5-12-1 record. 5:05 New Stampeders quarterback The Lions choosing Nathan Rourke their No. 1 pivot, and Calgary looking for an upgrade after two and a half seasons of Jake Maier brought the 32-year-old Adams to a team looking for a turnaround in 2025 after missing the post-season for the first time in 19 years. Story continues below advertisement 'He's Vernon Adams, he's Big-Play VA, so he's going to bring Calgary back to where it used to be,' predicted receiver Dominique Rhymes. 'He's used to being a winner, so he is going to be bringing that winning culture, and I think it's going happen immediately.' Tweet This Click to share quote on Twitter: "He's used to being a winner, so he is going to be bringing that winning culture, and I think it's going happen immediately." Adams denies B.C.'s preference for Rourke injects extra motivation into him as a Stampeder. 'No, not at all. I'm blessed, I'm grateful,' the Californian declared. 'I'm happy a team wants me and I'm here. It's the start of a new journey and it's great.' He was in the conversation for Most Outstanding Player in 2024 with B.C. before he was sidelined with injury in August. CFL quarterbacks often get disproportionate credit for wins and blame for losses in a team game, but there's no denying the position's importance in a three-down league. 'One twelfth, but quarterback play is vital,' said Stampeders coach and general manager Dave Dickenson, a former CFL quarterback himself. 'I don't need fancy plays. Make plays, sure, but do what is required to win. He's done that in his career. He is definitely a guy that is a winner and finds ways to win ball games even sometimes when he maybe he's not having his best stuff. Story continues below advertisement 'I really believe halfway through the year, he was odds-on favourite to win the MOP last year and injuries kind of derailed it. Careers are weird that way. They definitely take you from one city to the other. I think he's happy to be here and we just got to provide him the support so he can be Vernon.' New Stampeder quarterbacks coach Dakota Prukop has had a close view of Adams' career since Prukop played for Montana State and Adams for Eastern Washington in the Big Sky Conference. Both men eventually transferred to Oregon, with Prukop a Duck a year after Adams. The two men continued to circle each other in the CFL before crossing paths at Lions training camp last year. 'Vernon's a veteran in the CFL, but this is his first year in this playbook,' Prukop said. Story continues below advertisement 'His ability to pick up this playbook in the way he has and have the details in this play book has been something really impressive. That has not surprised me. I saw his professional habits when we were together in B.C. 'I don't want to say he's a gamer in the sense that he does not do well outside of a game, but he has an extra gear on game day. When you couple that with his professionalism and being a true pro, and then he has that extra gear in game day, if the pressure is on, if the score is tight, he's the guy you want in your huddle.' Since throwing his first CFL pass for the Montreal Alouettes in 2016, Adams has amassed 16,190 career passing yards with a 64-per-cent completion rate. He's thrown 86 touchdown passes, as well as 54 interceptions, while rushing for 24 touchdowns. 'My thing was I threw too many interceptions,' Adams said. 'Just want to make sure I'm protecting the ball and getting my playmakers the ball. Let them do the rest.'

Miners test skills at Ontario Mine Rescue provincial championship
Eight teams representing from across Ontario competed for bragging rights at the provincial championship held at Glencore's Kidd Creek Mine. If a miner gets trapped under a rock, other miners need to know what to do to help. That was one of the challenges mine rescue teams had to figure out during the provincial championship that took place this week at Glencore's Kidd Mine Site in Timmins. Eight teams participated in the event, including those from Timmins, Sudbury and Rainy River. Mine rescue Eight teams representing mines from throughout Ontario competed for bragging rights at the provincial championship held at Glencore's Kidd Creek Mine in Timmins. (Lydia Chubak/CTV News) 'We've been working for this since 2019,' said Justin Borger, an equipment trainer with New Gold Inc.'s Rainy River Mine. 'We've been trying to get to provincials. So, this year we were able to take districts finally and we were able to get here … the team worked really hard.' The other challenge took place underground, where a miner was pinned by a vehicle. 'So the guys, when they were in there … they had to try to sneak into a pretty confined space to try and put an apparatus on the casualty,' said Borger. 'It was very, very tough' 'They managed to do that -- and it was very, very tough.' Officials with Ontario Mine Rescue said testing miners' skills is important for many reasons, especially since the skills are not used often. 'Prevention has come a long way in mining, and that's really the direction that we want to continue heading, but when incidents do take place, they're very serious,' said Danny Taillfer, deputy chief mine rescue officer with Ontario Mine Rescue. 'You're in, you know, a pretty hazardous environment.' While no cash prize is up for grabs, the knowledge the participants gain at the competition could one day save a life. 'It's really bragging rights for the year,' said Taillfer. 'We've got, you know, a pretty amazing trophy that we're going to be handing out on Friday night and, yeah, I mean, at the end of it, it's just a pride thing. These guys have worked extremely hard to try and get their name put on that trophy.' The winning team will also be invited to compete at an international competition in Zambia, Africa, next spring.
