Hans India02-05-2025

Yangon: A total of 653 survivors have been rescued by emergency teams following Myanmar's 7.7-magnitude earthquake, the state-owned daily Myanma Alinn reported on Friday.
Both local and international rescue teams carried out search and rescue operations. They were also able to retrieve 779 bodies as of Thursday, the report added.
A 7.7-magnitude earthquake struck Myanmar on March 28. As of May 1, the disaster has claimed 3,835 lives and injured 5,105 people, with 105 others still unaccounted for, Xinhua news agency reported.
Myanmar has experienced a total of 157 aftershocks following the devastating 7.7 magnitude earthquake on March 28.
The aftershocks ranged from magnitude 2.8 to 7.5, the department said.
More than 200,000 people have been displaced after a powerful 7.7 magnitude earthquake struck central Myanmar on March 28, according to the country's National Disaster Management Committee (NDMC).
At the committee's third meeting of the year, held on Friday in Nay Pyi Taw, NDMC Chairman Vice Senior General Soe Win said the earthquake caused widespread destruction across 10 regions and states, including Nay Pyi Taw, Sagaing, Mandalay, Bago, Magway, and Shan.
The earthquake destroyed or damaged over 63,000 homes, 6,700 schools, 5,400 monasteries, 5,300 pagodas, and hundreds of other religious buildings, hospitals, bridges, roads, and dams, he said.
International medical teams, including 337 foreign personnel, have set up temporary hospitals in the worst-affected areas and are providing care alongside local health workers.
Following a request for international assistance by the Myanmar government, 2,095 rescue workers from 26 countries and regions have arrived in Myanmar, bringing over 3,800 tonnes of relief supplies using 147 planes, seven ships, and 23 vehicles, he added.
Authorities are inspecting damaged buildings using a colour-coded system -- blue, orange, and red -- to assess structural damage and guide repairs.
Temporary housing, including bashas and modular shelters, is being built for displaced staff and residents, while plans are underway to reconstruct homes using earthquake-resistant designs based on soil testing and fault-line assessments.
Under 'Operation Brahma', India was the first responder to the earthquake-hit Myanmar and has provided relief supplies of over 750 MT including essential medicines, food grain, ready-to-eat meals, tents, blankets, gensets, rapidly deployable surgical and medical shelters, water sanitation and hygiene services, drinking water, essential clothing, prefabricated office/residential structures, etc.

Ugandan Police call for calm following bomb explosion in capital

Kampala: Ugandan police have urged the public to remain calm and continue with their normal activities as security forces investigate a bomb explosion that occurred Tuesday near a church in Munyonyo, a suburb of the capital, Kampala. Inspector General of Police Abbas Byakagaba told reporters at the scene that various security agencies had been deployed to conduct a thorough investigation. He confirmed that no civilians were injured or killed in the incident, apart from the two suspected terrorists who were riding a motorcycle. "It is too early to give anything tangible. We ask our people to remain alert, to be conscious of the environment around them. The situation is under control, and let them continue with the celebration of Martyrs' Day and all other activities. We assure them of security," Byakagaba said. Earlier, military spokesperson Chris Magezi told Xinhua by telephone that the army had killed two suspected suicide bombers, one of them a woman. Magezi said an explosive device went off during an attempt to intercept the suspects, Xinhua news agency reported. There was a heavy deployment of police and military at the scene, which was cordoned off, and roads leading to the area were blocked. An eyewitness at the scene told Xinhua that the suspects, a man and a woman, were riding on a motorcycle. "When they reached the church where people had gathered for prayers, the woman failed to access it because of the heavy security," the eyewitness said. "Shortly after they left the place, there was an explosion which killed both of them." The incident occurred as the country was commemorating Martyrs' Day, a national public holiday that attracts thousands of pilgrims from within Uganda and abroad. The last similar attack occurred in Kampala in November 2021, when terrorists detonated bombs near a police station and government offices. The Ugandan military attributed those attacks to the Allied Democratic Forces (ADF), a rebel group affiliated with the Islamic State in Central Africa. The ADF, originally a Ugandan insurgent group, is currently based in the eastern Democratic Republic of Congo.

NDMC to build iconic clock tower at Talkatora roundabout

NEW DELHI: The New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC) has finalised a design and prepared the estimates for constructing a clock tower at the Talkatora Roundabout after receiving necessary approvals from the Delhi Urban Art Commission (DUAC) last month. NDMC Vice Chairman Kuljeet Singh Chahal on Sunday informed that a magnificent clock tower will be constructed at the Talkatora Roundabout with the aim of enhancing the visual identity and architectural beauty of Lutyens' Delhi. 'It will be approximately 27 metres tall and feature a 2-metre diameter clock. The structure will have an octagonal design, constructed using RCC (Reinforced Cement Concrete), and will be adorned with a layer of clay bricks,' he said. The surrounding area will feature granite flooring, steel railings, and marble decorations. The estimated cost of the project is Rs 1.3 crore, and the target is to complete construction by December 2025. The project might be tabled in the council meeting for final approval. Chahal stated that most municipal bodies across the country have iconic clock towers as symbols of a city's identity, heritage, and architectural significance, and now NDMC will also develop such a grand architectural landmark. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like They Lost Their Money - Learn From Their Lesson Expertinspector Click Here Undo 'It will not only serve as a new attraction for Lutyens' Delhi but also mark the entry point into the NDMC area from nearby MCD regions such as Rajendra Nagar and Karol Bagh. There will be internal stairs constructed at the facility to enable maintenance and repairs. For safety, railings will be installed around the tower, and the base will be decorated with marble,' stated the Vice Chairman while adding that the project reflects the national mission of beautifying Indian cities and preserving cultural heritage. Earlier, the NDMC got the soil of the proposed location tested for building the clock tower via a private agency at the proposed site (Talkatora Roundabout), and the soil was found suitable for building the clock tower structure. 'Since construction of the tower required amendments in the layout plan, NDMC sent an updated proposal to DUAC for approval. The agency took some specific details, including technical ones, about the Ghantaghar layout plan from NDMC, and gave consent in April,' said an official earlier. NDMC initiated a search for a suitable location to erect a clock tower following Lieutenant Governor VK Saxena's inspection in April. Previously, the 'New Delhi Town Hall' featured a clock tower atop its headquarters, but the structure was demolished in the 1980s to make way for the present NDMC building.

Back lanes under NDMC's cleanliness scanner

New Delhi: New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC) is focusing on cleaning, lifting construction and demolition (C&D) waste, removing unwanted plants, and addressing encroachments in back lanes as part of the final 10 days of its ongoing cleanliness drive. The mega cleanliness campaign, launched by chief minister Rekha Gupta earlier this month, tasked various agencies with maintaining sanitation across the city's wards and zones. "For the first 10 days, we concentrated on the general sanitation of all areas starting May 5. Now, we are focusing on a theme-based drive for back lanes, in coordination with multiple departments, including horticulture, sanitation, and enforcement," said an official. The drive also involves proper disposal of C&D waste, removing mosquito breeding points, and placing waste bins. Construction and repair sites in the NDMC area generate 500-700 metric tonnes of waste daily, including concrete, wood, metals, and asphalt. "Improperly managed C&D waste can lead to pollution and harm urban ecosystems. We've partnered with waste management agencies to process the waste into reusable materials, and we're collaborating with MCD's C&D waste processing plants," added officials. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Ótimas notícias para os cidadãos brasileiros! Additionally, malaria workers are conducting fogging in back lanes where breeding chances are high due to unhygienic conditions. To prevent illegal C&D waste dumping, NDMC is enforcing regulations and imposing penalties on violators. Strict action is being taken against encroachments, with zero tolerance policies in place. "Enforcement teams regularly monitor market areas for proper waste disposal, and local RWAs and MTAs are contributing actively to the cleanliness efforts through Shramdan," the council stated.
