SAIL supplies 16,000 tonnes of steel for world's tallest railway bridge, Bhilai Plant leads contribution

Time of India8 hours ago

RAIPUR: The Steel Authority of India Ltd (SAIL) has played a pivotal role in the construction of the world's tallest railway bridge over the Chenab River in Jammu & Kashmir, supplying a total of 16,000 tonnes of steel — with its Bhilai Steel Plant alone contributing 12,000 tonnes.
A senior official from the Bhilai plant confirmed the figure on Friday, hailing it as a proud moment for the Indian steel industry and a major milestone in nation-building. The Chenab Railway Bridge, inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on June 6, 2025, is now the highest railway arch bridge on the planet, rising 359 metres above the riverbed — even taller than the Eiffel Tower.
The bridge is part of the strategically crucial Udhampur-Srinagar-Baramulla Rail Link (USBRL) project and aims to bring seamless all-weather connectivity to Kashmir, significantly improving both civilian and military mobility.
SAIL's contribution to the bridge included a wide range of steel products such as TMT bars, heavy plates, structural steel, and hot strip mill products. From the total volume supplied, the Bhilai Steel Plant alone provided 5,922 tonnes of TMT bars, 6,454 tonnes of steel plates, and 56 tonnes of structural steel. The remaining steel was delivered by SAIL's IISCO, Durgapur, Rourkela, and Bokaro plants.
Officials said that the construction of this 1.3 kilometre long bridge involved the use of approximately 29,000 metric tonnes of fabricated steel, over 10 lakh cubic metres of earthwork, 66,000 cubic metres of concrete, and a vast network of 84 kilometres of cable anchors and rock bolts.

Engineered to endure wind speeds of up to 266 kmph and strong earthquakes, the bridge is being seen not just as an engineering feat, but a strategic lifeline to India's northern frontier.
SAIL's Bhilai Steel Plant, known for producing high-grade TMT bars with earthquake- and corrosion-resistant properties, has been a consistent contributor to key national infrastructure. Its steel has previously been used in iconic structures like the Bandra-Worli Sea Link, Atal Setu, Sela and Atal Tunnels, and even in defence applications including warships like INS Vikrant.
According to the Bhilai plant official, the bridge is yet another example of how SAIL's quality steel is powering India's most ambitious projects. 'From high-altitude tunnels to bullet trains and now the world's tallest railway bridge, SAIL steel — especially from Bhilai — is proving essential to India's infrastructure push,' the official said.
The Chenab Bridge marks a significant advancement in rail connectivity in Jammu and Kashmir, but it also represents the silent strength of Indian steel behind every monumental achievement. As trains prepare to run across the mighty arch, it is steel from Bhilai that forms the backbone — quite literally — of this towering symbol of progress.

Delhi Metro achieves tunnel breakthrough on Aerocity corridor

New Delhi: The underground tunnel between Maa Anandmayee Marg and Tughlaqabad railway colony station has been completed on the Tughlaqabad-Aerocity corridor of phase IV, also known as Golden Line. A tunnel boring machine (TBM) broke through on Saturday morning at Tughlaqabad railway colony station after boring a 0.79km-long tunnel. This tunnel breakthrough was achieved using a mammoth 96-metre-long TBM. Two parallel circular tunnels for up and down movement are being constructed on this stretch. The breakthrough on the other parallel tunnel is expected to be achieved in July 2025. The tunnel breakthrough occurred in the presence of transport minister Pankaj Kumar Singh and DMRC managing director Vikas Kumar. Singh said, "Going forward, we will further accelerate metro expansion and ensure that Delhi's citizens receive the quality infrastructure and services they truly deserve." This new tunnel was constructed at an average depth of around 18 metres. About 566 rings were installed in the tunnel, with an inner diameter of 5.8 metres. The tunnel was built using the proven technology of the earth pressure balancing method with a concrete lining made of precast tunnel rings. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like No dark spots, 10 years younger! The concrete segments were cured with a steam curing system to achieve early strength. "All necessary safety precautions were taken during the construction of the tunnel below the existing built-up structures. Ground movements were monitored with highly sensitive instruments fixed on nearby structures, ensuring that there was no settlement anywhere," said Anuj Dayal, principal executive director of corporate communications at Delhi Metro Rail Corporation. As part of the phase-IV work approved so far, 40.11km underground lines are being constructed. The Aerocity-Tughlaqabad corridor has underground sections totalling 19.34km. A TBM is a machine used to excavate tunnels with a circular cross-section through various soil and rock strata. They can be designed to bore through anything from hard rock to sand. TBMs have revolutionised tunnelling work worldwide, enabling tunnels to be bored without disturbing buildings and other surface structures. TBMs are particularly useful for underground tunnelling work in congested urban areas. DMRC has been using TBMs for its tunnelling work since phase I. In phase III, when approximately 50km underground sections were built, about 30 TBMs were deployed in the national capital.

India a must at G7 table: Mark Carney on inviting PM Modi

NEW DELHI: Canadian PM Mark Carney defended the last-minute invitation to his counterpart Narendra Modi for the , saying it made sense for Canada and other members to invite the "5th largest economy" and the most populous country in the world that's central to a number of supply chains. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now While Modi's travel programme is not finalised yet, he's expected to reach Alberta in time for the G7 outreach session on June 17. Other G7 members keen on seeing Modi's participation, hints Carney The G7 summit begins on June 15. Asked repeatedly about why Canada would have Modi over when the probe into the killing of Khalistan separatist Hardeep Singh Nijjar is still on, Canadian PM Mark Carney said there had been progress on law enforcement dialogue which "recognises issues of accountability". Carney's predecessor Justin Trudeau had wrecked the India-Canada relationship by alleging the Indian govt's role in the murder without, as India continues to maintain, sharing any evidence. "Bilaterally, we have now agreed-importantly-to continued law enforcement dialogue. So, there's been some progress on that, which recognises issues of accountability. I extended the invitation to Prime Minister Modi in that context, and he has accepted,'' said Carney, responding to questions from the media about the issue and the invitation to Modi. "We are a country of the rule of law. The rule of law is proceeding as it should in Canada, and I am not going to disrupt that process,'' he added. Carney hinted that other G7 members were keen on seeing participation by the Indian leader. "First, we are in the role - Canada is in the role - of the G7 chair, and in those discussions, as agreed with our G7 colleagues, we're addressing important issues like energy security, the digital future, and critical minerals, among others. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now Partnerships in building infrastructure in the emerging and developing world are also part of the agenda,'' he said. "In my capacity as G7 chair, and in consultation with others - some of whom also make these determinations - it makes sense to include India, the fifth-largest economy in the world, effectively the most populous country, and central to a number of those supply chains,'' he added.
