Athletes at Limestone University hit the transfer portal

GAFFNEY, S.C. (WSPA) — Despite a potential funding life saver, Limestone University's future is still uncertain.
Limestone University faces possible closure
On Tuesday, the university's board of trustees said they needed more time to come up with options to save the school.
While athletic events are still underway at Limestone, student-athletes are in contact with coaches at other schools, trying to figure out their next steps if the school closes.
The transfer portal is a large aspect of college athletics, but student-athletes at Limestone University are not entering the portal by their own choice.
'Where do we go from here?': Students, athletes react to possible closure of Limestone University
According to a spokesperson for Limestone University, if the school stays open, athletics will continue next fall, but student-athletes said time is running out to make a decision.
'The school is mostly made up of athletes and it is so late in the game and a lot of people do depend on scholarship to be able to go on to college and get that higher education and so do I,' said Mariya Montgomery, a Volleyball player at Limestone,
Competing for Limestone comes with a sense of pride.
'I love Limestone,' said volleyball player Calie Covey. 'The people make it ten times better. The athletics of course but I would do anything to keep it open.'
'It's so sad': Alumni and staff discuss possible closure of Limestone University
'Coming to Limestone was a big change,' Limestone Volleyball player, Jenna Szabelski said. 'I was definitely scared to come but it changed my life — it has been such an amazing school.'
Student-athletes said competing as a Saint is more than a number or name on the back of their jersey, it's about being part of a family.
'The chemistry is great,' said Evan Soeffker, a baseball player. 'A bunch of scrappy guys we are a family out there. Practice is great and everybody is really just playing for each other.'
On the football team, freshman running back Myran Hunt said he's entered the transfer portal.
'It is weird,' Hunt reflected. 'I feel like I am in high school again, starting all over, but everything happens for a reason.'
'It's a long shot': Limestone students turn to Mr. Beast, other influencers to save university
A lot of students' future career in college athletics is unknown.
'It is crunch time for people,' Covey continued. 'People are closing rosters so I just hope someone will take me.'
For seniors heading into graduation, things also feel different.
'I definitely feel a lot of guilt,' Szabelski explained. 'I was proud to watch them next year and come back and cheer them on and to see them go through these hard times it is really hard and really sad.'
Head Baseball Coach Brett Harker is facing an oddly familiar situation. Harker was at Furman when the Paladins dropped their baseball program in 2020.
'What I have learned through all this is I am done with loyalties to universities or NCAA,' Harker said. 'My loyalty is to these players so just figuring how to best serve these guys.'
Amid uncertain times, prayer walk held at Limestone University
Harker says the most difficult part is making sure his players are taken care of.
'I have never had a university call me and invite me to their wedding or send me pictures of their first child, but over the last 14 years, I have gone to a lot of weddings and get pictures from proud dads,' Harker said. 'I find myself at a point now where I only care about them.
Linda Greenberg is the mother of a baseball player at Limestone. She said that she wanted the university to be a home for her son.
'Everyone is still in shock and now panic has set in because we have to find him a place,' Greenberg said. 'He has to find a place.'
Nearly 500 possible layoffs if Limestone University closes, report says
Through it all, athletes like Soeffker, said the difficulty has only made them stronger.
'We know this could be the last time we play together and some of us ever see each other again so we are really just playing for each other,' Soeffker said. 'The guy next to you is going to get you recruited so you just play your best.'
Many athletes said if Limestone stays open, they will stick around.
The question still looming is if Limestone University will continue on. A decision on if the university will close will be announced no later than April 29.

BMW Charity Pro-Am raises over $16 million for S.C. charities

GREENVILLE, S.C. (WSPA) — At the BMW Charity Pro-Am golf tournament, their mission is all about giving back to local charities. For 25 years, the BMW Charity Pro-Am has been in 'full swing,' bringing a fun tournament to the Upstate while raising money for charities across the state. 'Oh, they love it,' Jeff Morris, Executive Director of Folds of Honor for the Palmetto State also said. 'They are calling me as soon as we are finished,' Chrystal Assadzandi, Charity and Volunteer Coordinator for the BMW Charity Pro-Am, said. 'I get a lot of calls saying 'how can we participate? How can we be a part?'' In 2001, the tournament was created to showcase the beauty of the South Carolina Upstate, while bringing locals, celebrities, and professional golfers together. It's aimed to raise money and awareness for South Carolina charities. One of those charities that has been impacted is Folds of Honor. 'I have had many veterans come up to me and they are so grateful to have the opportunity to come watch a golf tournament, come into the hospitality suite, interact with other veterans,' Morris said. 'It is amazing when you hear them, and they just go in there and they swap stories.' Morris said since Folds of Honor's involvement with the BMW Charity Pro-Am began in 2018, their group has been awarded around $250,000. The charity offers educational scholarships to the children and spouses of military and first responders. Funding for Folds of Honor, along with the more than 50 charities involved in this year's tournament, is raised in many ways, including through donations, ticket sales, and volunteer programs. BMW leaders said hundreds of charities have been impacted through this tournament over the past 25 years, and the money raised for them has not slowed down. 'We have given back in the past 25 years over $16 million to charities right here in the Upstate,' Assadzandi said. The BMW Charity Pro-Am will run through Sunday, June 8. For the final two days of the tournament, it's being held at the Thornblade Club in Greenville. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. Ranking the top 20 sacks leaders in New Orleans Saints franchise history

Ranking the top 20 sacks leaders in New Orleans Saints franchise history Cameron Jordan finds himself on the heels of a Hall of Famer Our top-20 series continues as we shift to the defensive side of the ball, highlighting the New Orleans Saints' all-time sack leaders. This list features some of the most disruptive forces to ever wear the black and gold — players who built their legacies by living in opponents' backfields. A current All-Pro linebacker makes a surprise appearance at the 20th spot, while a pair of beloved fan favorites sit near the top, each playing a key role in establishing the dominant defenses of the Sean Payton era. And at the very top, another active Saint is on the brink of history, needing just two more sacks to pass a Pro Football Hall of Famer and claim the franchise record. At least unofficially. Before we get into the list, we should note that sacks have only been tracked officially since 1982. But the team at Pro Football Reference went back further and did the work to chart sacks in years beyond that. That's why Rickey Jackson (who had 8 unofficial sacks in his 1981 rookie season) still places ahead of Cameron Jordan, who was officially named the franchise sacks leader during the 2022 season. So while this is an unofficial list, as PFR's work has not been double-checked by the NFL, ESPN, or another major outlet, it's still worth remembering the guys who made key plays before they were given full credit for it. Here are the (unofficial) top 20 sack leaders in New Orleans Saints history: 1. Rickey Jackson (1981-1993): 123 sacks 2. Cameron Jordan (2011-2024): 121.5 sacks 3. Wayne Martin (1989-1999): 82.5 sacks 4. Pat Swilling (1986-1992): 76.5 sacks 5. Will Smith (2004-2012): 67.5 sacks 6. Frank Warren (1981-1994): 56 sacks 7. Joe Johnson (1994-2001): 50.5 sacks 8. La'Roi Glover (1997-2001): 50 sacks 9. Jim Wilks (1981-1993): 49 sacks 10. Derland Moore: (1973-1985): 48 sacks 11. Charles Grant (2002-2009): 47 sacks Tied-12. Darren Howard (2000-2005): 44.5 sacks Tied-12. Renaldo Turnbull (1990-1996): 44.5 sacks 14. Elois Grooms (1975-1981): 42.5 sacks 15. Bruce Clark (1982-1988): 39.5 sacks 16. Joe Owens (1971-1975): 38 sacks 17. Bob Pollard (1971-1977): 37 sacks 18. Elex Price (1973-1980): 32 sacks 19. Junior Galette (2010-2014): 31.5 sacks 20. Demario Davis (2018-2024): 31 sacks

Fans, celebrities excited for return of BMW Charity Pro-Am to Thornblade

GREER, S.C. (WSPA) – Celebrating 25 years, this year's BMW Charity Pro-Am brings together celebrities, professional golfers and the Upstate community for a good cause and a fun weekend. Thousands of people were out at the Thornblade Club in Greenville County having a great time Friday afternoon. Many said they look forward to this tournament weekend year after year. 'It's just a great tradition for the neighborhood,' said Dale Hunt, a Thornblade resident. 'The club gets behind it and everybody likes it. It's just fun. It's a great little celebration.' 'It's just an immaculate golf course, we love just being in the atmosphere of what this is and I love that it's literally in our backyard, so we don't have to travel very far,' said neighbor Steven DeLisle. One familiar face some may recognize out on the course is Furman University alumnus and former USA soccer player Clint Dempsey, who said he is always thrilled to come back to Greenville. 'I went to college at Furman University,' said Dempsey. 'It's where it gave me a chance to take my game to the next level for soccer and kind of become my own man, getting away from Texas and being on my own. So, anytime I can come here it always feels like a second home.' Dempsey said while he hasn't lost his competitive spirit, he and his partner are just out to have a good time and raise money for local charities. 'Anytime you can have a win-win situation where you're doing good, can be outside enjoying a different sport, and it challenges you to be a better person, ' he said. 'It kind of keeps that competitiveness going in your life once you've retired from another sport. It's always fun and like I said, to give back and help those in need, there's no better feeling than that' Tournament organizers said over the past 25 years, more than $16 million has been donated to local charities, including Mobile Meals of Spartanburg, PAL, Gibbs Center Center, Folds of Honor Palmetto State, Hispanic Alliance, Hope Center for Children, Neighborhood Cancer Connection, and Upstate Warrior Solution.
