‘I feel horrible doing this': Inside Poh's hardest challenge yet

It's no exaggeration to say Poh Ling Yeow– a woman, like Beyoncé, I could have simply identified as 'Poh' – is one of the most beloved people in the country. The inaugural MasterChef runner-up has been a staple in our homes for 16 years, sharing her infectious joy for cooking through ABC and SBS series and books.
In 2020, she provided must-see viewing during lockdowns returning for a chaotic season of MasterChef: Back to Win and was soon after voted Australian reality TV contestant of the decade in AACTA's Audience Choice Awards, beating the likes of Sophie Monk and Chrissie Swan.
She's on our screens more than ever, having returned to the Channel Ten show where it all began as a judge last year (alongside Andy Allen, Sofia Levin and Jean-Christophe Novelli) and backing it up this week with a new season of Back to Win. As far as audiences are concerned, there could be no one better suited to the job.

But Yeow still isn't convinced. 'I don't know if I'm very good at it, actually,' she says, her famous full-throated laugh radiating down the phone line. 'In fact, I know I'm not that good at it. I'm a bit of a waffler … I'm not very good at delivering really succinct, catchy phrases. I find it very hard.'
'ABC is very much my brand,' she goes on, possibly stressing out the Ten PR team listening in on the call. 'A bit arty. Quality content. And they don't mind a waffler! It was a really safe space … If I had gone out on my own on a commercial network, I think I would have really struggled.
'But it's been so awesome to have this full circle moment and be back again. It's been such a crazy journey. It really has.'
When Malaysian-born Yeow, a then-35-year-old painter from Adelaide, first applied to MasterChef in 2009, she didn't expect any of this.
'[The show] was a complete pie-in-the-sky thing that no one knew about,' she says, recalling how a friend had sent her the entry form. 'I had such humble aspirations. I thought I was going to come back and start a little cottage industry making jam. No joke.'
While she did have aspirations to write a book at some point – a record of her family recipes – Yeow's motivation on the show was more personal than professional.
'I felt like I'd let so much of my culture slip away, trying to assimilate as a kid. And I was at this point in my life where I was just feeling a little bit wistful about the fact I hadn't nurtured those parts of me more.
'I'd lost the language, and I didn't really relate to the values any more because I was so Australianised. So food became this really important thing. I started to think about food quite obsessively, learning all the dishes that I grew up with.'
To use some of the MasterChef parlance that would go on to define the next decade of Australian primetime, Yeow's story was one of the first 'food journeys' – a home cook given the hero treatment, beloved for her skill and relatability in equal measure. And the fact she was achieving such success while also embracing her cultural heritage was a landmark moment for Asian-Australian representation on screen.
'To be completely honest, the public validation was very nice,' she says, reflecting on that first season. 'I grew up such a lonesome kid and this was something I guess I'd yearned for my whole life. It had this very profound effect on me on so many levels – not just career-wise, but also the way I saw myself.'
Yeow admits that in the years since the early seasons, the show strayed from its trademark relatability – and suffered for it.
'I think it's gone through many iterations,' she says. 'At the beginning, it was all about the home cook … And then it went crazy-foodie and I think we did lose some people along the way. But I feel like we've orbited back to that, which I really love. We want [audiences] to be able to relate to the food and to the flavours that we're showcasing.'
Does a Back to Win season, featuring now-professional chefs showcasing their skills – and to some degree using the platform to boost their profiles and existing businesses – complicate that?
It worked well enough in 2020. The season Yeow starred in was a ratings hit. And while the success was hugely influenced by a captive audience in COVID lockdowns and the novelty of a new judging panel (Andy Allen, Melissa Leong and the late Jock Zonfrillo), the show itself was still hugely entertaining. Nostalgia for past contestants such as Poh also certainly drew back viewers who had long since disengaged.
This season features many familiar faces including Callum Hann and Laura Sharrad, both entering the MasterChef kitchen for the third time and having last competed against Yeow in 2020. Andre Ursini, who placed seventh in season one, is also back for another crack.
'I felt really scared coming back [for this season],' Yeow says. ' Back to Win is all the people that I competed against, and now I have to judge them. I feel horrible doing this. But they've all taken it on the chin and been so lovely to me … I think a lot of my role is about the mentoring and the empathy, having been in that position a couple of times.'

Having had a closer look at how these contestants work, she says she's also been eating 'a bit of humble pie'. Despite taking some losses hard at the time, she says 'I completely understand why a lot of them beat me'.
'I've seen them take my advice on board too, so I feel okay about being in this position,' she says, laughing. 'But I'll never say I completely feel comfortable in it.'

During the final weeks of Perth's Sister Act season — where she played Michelle and alternated the role of Deloris Van Cartier — Thomas would spend her weekdays in Sydney-based CATS rehearsals and weekends on the Crown Perth Theatre stage. While that is a lot of frequent flyer points, the 29-year-old said she would have done anything to be in the 40th anniversary Australian tour of Andrew Lloyd Webber's famous musical based on T.S. Eliot's Old Possum's Book of Practical Cats. Not only is the Ohio-born performer in the record-breaking musical, but she has landed the role of former glamour cat and now ostracised feline, Grizabella. 'My introduction to musical theatre was CATS the musical,' Thomas said, laughing at the full circle moment. 'It's crazy how life plays out that way but my mum just randomly brought home the 1998 VHS one day and from that moment on, I just remember being hooked. 'I don't even know if I would be a performer if it weren't for CATS, which is so crazy that I'm in this rehearsal room now for this show.' Thomas will star in the production alongside Todd McKenney, Mark Vincent, Lucy Maunder, Des Flanagan, Jarrod Draper, Leigh Archer and the rest of the talented ensemble. The show opens in Sydney from June 17 before the tour reaches Crown Theatre Perth on November 8. 'I think the thing that's set apart this experience from any other rehearsal experience is the fact that everyone who is teaching the show is someone who has been a part of the CATS world for years,' Thomas, who is based between New York City and Melbourne, said. 'They love the show, and they have so many different specifics and nuances they're able to bring into the rehearsal space that helps us as actors get into the mindset and get into the world of the show. 'It's just been a magical room, because the people who are teaching the room have already brought the magic there, and they just kind of hold our hand and show us how we can bring that magic to the stage.' Screen Queen TV reviews: Ocean With David Attenborough, Mix Tape, Fubar S2 and Romcon

I've recently become obsessed with following the exploits of a family of urban foxes living in the overgrown backyard of a house in London. A young woman named Kels was surprised to find a mama fox had taken up residence with her cubs in her garden. She's been filming their exploits (from a safe distance) for TikTok for about four weeks now and, honestly, it's so wholesome. I'm delighting in learning more about their early lives via this young Londoner, who probably knows about as much as I do about foxes — she and I are on a steep learning curve, and I LOVE this for us. Full disclosure: Sir David Attenborough she is not. But her decidedly lo-fi nature commentary has more in common with his latest (last?) doco, hitting screens this week, than you might think. Sir David's film is dedicated to highlighting the importance and health of the world's oceans, and as the natural historian, now a grand 99 years old, says in the promo: 'We save the sea, we save our world'. It's hard not to feel emotional as you hear his rallying cry, as he implores us to 'open our eyes to what is happening right now, below the waves'. This beautiful National Geographic film has a huge budget and is being released on Disney Plus on World Oceans Day. It's sure to have a big impact. But Kels' videos, in their own little way, are also important. She's encouraging us to open our eyes to what's happening around us, and I love her little nature docos, filmed on a phone and beamed over social media to her modest number of 'Fox Fam' followers. Her videos are a million miles from this doco, but have a similar message of the wonder of the world around us, and I feel like this is something Attenborough would wholeheartedly approve of. Long may his legacy live on. Did you catch the addictive One Day on Netflix last year? It was a delightful series based on the book by David Nicholls, boasting a killer soundtrack and a devastating premise. I was hooked. In the same vein comes this four-part series, an Australian-Irish co-production. It follows the passionate teen romance of Alison and Daniel (played by Florence Hunt and Rory Walton-Smith) in Sheffield in the late 1980s. They connect over their love of music, swapping mix tapes, before life — and events beyond their control — wrests them from one another's orbit. It picks up again a decade or so later, with Teresa Palmer and Jim Sturgess playing them in their older years. They are now living on opposite ends of the earth, but connect again via music. This delightfully nostalgic drama will have you feeling all the feels. Not to be missed. Shout out to the little show that could! Twelve years on and I'm still enjoying dipping into this hilarious distraction of a show, which, in my opinion, continues to get better as the years go on. Great Monday night winter TV. Arnold Schwarzenegger is back for the second series of this surprisingly likeable comedy, which sees him and Monica Barbaro star as father-daughter CIA operatives. This season, Carrie-Anne Moss joins as a German spy named Greta Nelso — what a combo! Jason Porter, it turns out, is a man who managed to hoodwink several women, including Heather Rovet (pictured) in Toronto, fleecing them out of hundreds of thousands of dollars. Hats off to him: it takes chutzpah to attempt a catfishing scam these days, knowing there's every possibility you'll be immortalised via a made-for-TV doco series. JOKES — this is grim.
