A local Wicklow visual artist is gearing up for her first solo exhibition which invites audiences to find beauty in the unexpected and to appreciate the delicate balance between nature and the human experience.
Sarah Randle's work intertwines the wonders of the natural world with the captivating narratives found in film, books, life and the limitless realms of her imagination. She lives in Wicklow town and often explores nearby forests, woodlands and gardens which serve as both a sanctuary and an inspiration towards her work.
Speaking about her upcoming 'A Visual Awakening' exhibition, Sarah said: 'I have been involved in different group exhibitions before but this will be my first solo exhibition, which I am very excited about.'
Graduating with an Honours degree in fine art painting from the National College of Art and Design, Sarah honed her skills in various media, including oil, acrylic and ink.
'My creative process is deeply influenced by nostalgia, cinematography and world events,' said Sarah. 'I seek to capture fleeting moments of beauty and emotion, transforming them into vibrant and atmospheric visual experiences that resonate with viewers.
"I believe that beauty exists not only in grand landscapes but also in the subtle details of everyday life, prompting me to explore themes of connection, memory and the passage of time, while also using my art as a platform to advocate for the preservation of our planet's beauty.'
'A Visual Awakening' exhibition launches in Wicklow Library on Tuesday, June 3, at 7pm and then continues until Monday, June 30.

Leaving Cert Diary 2025: Students are free from English exams

To paraphrase today's Leaving Cert Diary blogger, who was referencing The Shawshank Redemption, we say students are free at last from English exams! The Leaving Cert Diary series, with thanks to our friends at the Irish Second-Level Students' Union (ISSU), will continue to share the thoughts of the young people sitting the state exams over the next two weeks. Here, Sarah from Co Louth and Kayleigh from Co Westmeath tell us how English Paper 2 went for them. We also have advice on how to eat well, get a good night's sleep and manage stress - click here! Read Sarah's blog here... As the English Paper 2 finishes, I am sure many students' hands are falling off. Like Andy Dufresne in The Shawshank Redemption, we are finally free from the prison, the prison of English exams! The comparative had three modes this year which was guaranteed to any student sitting the exam. The theme or issue question I wrote was how a character's frame of mind aided the author's exploration of the complexity of a theme or issue. I thought this question allowed more interpretation than the cultural context question on consequences of not conforming to societal norms. The Single text gave a wide variety of what I could talk about from injustices/ justice and betraying one's conscience on The Crucible. The unseen and prepared poetry section was handy for anyone who studied the female poets. I found I was torn between Eavan Boland and Tracy K Smith questions as they both were accessible to answer. Day two is done, but there are many more exams ahead of us. The next challenge? Algebra, calculus and Functions. Read Kayleigh's blog here... English Paper 2 seems to have gone over equally as well as Paper 1. Tracy K Smith made her debut on the paper with a question on "thought provoking questions about the nature of our lives". Boland made an appearance which I think the whole country was hoping for! Though Mahon is also another popular choice I think the question was unusual and would have certainly put me off going for it. The first King Lear question seems to have been disliked by a few students. Personally I found it nicer than the second question, though the content for both is very familiar. There seems to be students unhappy with every single comparative question, I wasn't a fan myself of the cultural context question, especially as some leaving course media has more obvious encouragement of division than others. The unseen poetry was nothing out of the ordinary either with both the two ten mark questions or the one twenty mark question being easy to approach. Overall I think depending on what students had prepared the paper could have gone either way but was still mostly what was predicted. I think we're all delighted to have one of the two paper subjects out of the way! Founded in 2008, the ISSU is the national representative body for school students in the Republic of Ireland. The ISSU is led by students, for students.

Mother of Louis Walsh remembered as ‘an extraordinary woman' as Westlife members and stars attend funeral of Maureen (94)

The Church of the Holy Family in Kiltimagh, Co Mayo, was almost full to capacity for the funeral of Maureen Walsh (94). Her sons Louis and Frank and daughter Sarah paid tribute to their mother, who enjoyed a great relationship with her children and always encouraged them to 'make the best' of themselves. Celebrities from the music and TV industries were in attendance, including Westlife members Nicky Byrne, Kian Egan and Shane Filan, as well as Dana Rosemary Scallan and Glenda Gilson. Born Maureen Healy in 1931 to Delia and Martin Healy and the eldest of five children, Ms Walsh moved to Kiltimagh when she was a teenager. She began working in a premises now occupied by the Teach O'Hora pub before she married Frank Walsh. The couple had 10 children. In the 1970s, she got a 'new lease of life' when she began working with voluntary help group Western Care, where she made many friends and stayed until her retirement. Fr Michael Quinn, who concelebrated the funeral mass with three other priests, described Ms Walsh as 'a true friend of many years', 'a treasured neighbour' and 'a great work colleague'. Mourners heard about the hospitality she showed visitors to her home in Church Street, Kiltimagh, where her door was 'always open'. A Mayo flag, rosary beads, a photo of Padre Pio, a pack of playing cards, a copy of Ireland's Own magazine, a rolling pin and a family photo were brought to the altar as symbols of her life. Ms Walsh was an enthusiastic follower of the Mayo and Kiltimagh GAA teams and always flew a flag outside her house before big games. She was also a keen listener to Midwest Radio throughout the day. 'She said she used to go to bed with Michael Commins twice a week,' said daughter Sarah, referring to the popular radio show presented by Commins, who knew her. She went on several Midwest Radio trips and always brought rashers, sausages and Barry's teabags with her. Described as 'deeply religious', Ms Walsh had a great love of Padre Pio and the rosary and went on pilgrimages to Medjugorje. She was also an enthusiastic set dancer and played cards most nights of the week before being afflicted with Alzheimer's. Son Frank said the disease made her final 12 years 'tough on the family'. 'Maureen lived for her family,' he said. 'She was the heart, she was the rock. We all loved her.' He went on to describe her as 'a woman of great strength, loyalty, grace, with infectious laughter and compassion'. 'It's very, very hard to say goodbye, but we have to let go,' he said. Ms Walsh is survived by sons Louis, Joseph, Noel, Paul, Frank, Eamon and Padraic, daughters Sarah and Evelyn, sisters Anne O'Hora and Christeen Reddington and brother Martin Healy, and was predeceased by her husband and daughter Catherine. She was laid to rest in a wicker coffin in Kilkinure Cemetery in Kiltimagh.
