Multiple suspected drones crash across Iraq amid heightened regional tensions
Baghdad (IraqiNews.com) – At least three separate incidents involving crashed drones or suspected drone parts were reported across Iraq on Thursday (June 19, 2025), raising concerns about violations of the country's airspace amid heightened regional tensions.
In Nineveh province, a security source reported that a drone, suspected to be of Iranian origin, crashed in an open area in the Al-Qaraj sub-district near Makhmour. Iraqi Army teams cordoned off the site and were preparing to detonate the wreckage remotely as a precaution.
Separately, in the Kurdistan Region, an unidentified drone crashed in an agricultural area in Dukan district, Sulaymaniyah, with no casualties reported. Local official Sirwan Sarhad confirmed that an investigation has been launched.
Meanwhile, in southern Iraq, 'war objects believed to be drones' were reported to have fallen near a cement factory in Muthanna province. Security forces and explosives experts were dispatched to the scene.
These incidents come as Iraq navigates the fallout from the ongoing Iran-Israel conflict, which has previously seen drone and missile remnants land in various parts of the country.

Israel strikes Lebanon killing Hezbollah member
Beirut – The Lebanese health ministry said an Israeli strike on south Lebanon killed one person on Friday, as Israel said it killed a member of Iran-backed militant group Hezbollah. Israel has continued to carry out near-daily strikes on Lebanon despite a November ceasefire with Hezbollah and an unprecedented bombing campaign it launched on Iran last week. In a statement carried by Lebanon's state-run National News Agency, the ministry said that an Israeli drone strike on a vehicle killed one person near the southern village of Abbassiyeh. The Israeli army named its target as Mohammed Khadr al-Husseini and said he was 'commander of the Hezbollah firepower array in the Litani sector'. The military alleged that Husseini 'advanced numerous attacks toward Nahariya, Haifa and additional cities' during the war and supported efforts in rebuilding Hezbollah's arsenal since then. Israel has repeatedly bombed its northern neighbour despite a November ceasefire ending more than a year of hostilities with Hezbollah. Israel said it would continue its strikes on Lebanon until Hezbollah was fully disarmed. As Israel's war with Iran entered its eighth day, Israeli Defence Minister Israel Katz warned Hezbollah to keep out of the conflict, saying: 'If there is terrorism, there will be no Hezbollah'. Speaking in Beirut on Thursday, US special envoy for Syria Thomas Barrack said any intervention by Hezbollah would be 'a very, very, very bad decision'.

Iran arrests 16 over alleged Israeli ties
Shafaq News/ Iran's Revolutionary Guard Intelligence has detained 16 individuals in Lorestan province accused of collaborating with Israeli intelligence, Mehr News Agency reported on Friday. The suspects are also accused of circulating fabricated content, sending images to hostile media outlets, and disseminating material intended to incite unrest and erode public unity. In a statement, the Guard's public relations office warned that any activity aligned with 'enemy objectives'—whether online or offline—will be continuously monitored and firmly countered. Tehran has detained dozens on similar charges since last Friday, when Israel launched airstrikes on the Iranian capital, prompting missile and drone retaliation. Despite mounting international pressure, the conflict continues to escalate.

IRGC uncovers Israeli drone network operating inside Iran
Shafaq News/ Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) announced, on Thursday, the arrest of a network allegedly affiliated with Israel, accused of operating unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) from within Iranian territory. In a statement, the IRGC's intelligence arm said the operation was carried out in the western province of Chaharmahal and Bakhtiari by agents from the Qamar Bani Hashem Corps. The network was reportedly tracked, surveilled, and dismantled without incident. While the statement did not disclose the identities or nationalities of those detained, nor the specific missions assigned to the drones, the announcement comes amid heightened Iranian concerns over Israeli espionage and sabotage operations involving UAVs. In recent months, Iran has reported multiple incursions by unidentified drones targeting sensitive sites, including the Natanz nuclear facility and military installations in Isfahan and Tehran. These incidents have prompted Iranian intelligence services to bolster aerial surveillance and cyber defenses linked to remote drone operations. Tehran has long accused Israel's Mossad and the US Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) of orchestrating drone-based reconnaissance and sabotage missions inside Iran. Officials in the capital claim these operations aim to undermine Iran's military and nuclear infrastructure, either through direct strikes or by gathering sensitive intelligence.
