Osaka police arrest Japanese man linked to fraud group in Myanmar

Japan Times25-03-2025

Osaka police on Tuesday arrested a 29-year-old Japanese man who had been detained in Thailand for allegedly tricking a Japanese high school student into committing fraud from Myanmar.
The suspect, Tomu Fujinuma, was arrested by the Osaka Prefectural Police after being transported to Kansai International Airport from Bangkok. Fujinuma was arrested on initial charges of abducting an acquaintance in his 20s from a street in Osaka and assaulting and confining him in August last year.
The suspect allegedly stole ¥2.6 million in cash and a watch from the acquaintance and fled Japan after the incident, police said.
Japanese police are also investigating Fujinuma for allegedly tricking the high school student and kidnapping him to Myanmar.
According to Thai police and other sources, Fujinuma was held at an airport in Bangkok on Feb. 13 this year for his alleged involvement in managing a fraud scheme in Myanmar.
Fujinuma is believed to have been involved in a fraud group targeting Japanese nationals that was operating from a Chinese-affiliated crime group's base near Myawaddy, eastern Myanmar. He allegedly forced the high school student from Miyagi Prefecture, whom he met in an online gaming community, to commit fraud.
Fujinuma may have also been involved in a Japanese scam group operating from Cambodia, Thai police and other sources said.

(Chalit Saeton/via REUTERS) BANGKOK--An Air India flight from Phuket in Thailand to India's capital New Delhi received an onboard bomb threat on Friday and made an emergency landing on the island, airport authorities said. All 156 passengers on flight AI 379 had been escorted from the plane, in line with emergency plans, an Airports of Thailand official said. The aircraft took off from Phuket airport bound for the Indian capital at 9.30 a.m. (0230 GMT) on Friday but made a wide loop around the Andaman Sea and landed back on the southern Thai island, according to flight tracker Flightradar24. The incident follows the crash of an Air India flight in Ahmedabad on Thursday shortly after takeoff, in which more than 240 people were killed. AOT did not provide details on the bomb threat. Air India did not immediately respond to a request for comment. Indian airlines and airports were inundated with hoax bomb threats last year, with nearly 1,000 hoax calls and messages received in the first 10 months, nearly 10 times that of 2023.

Chinese fighter flies within 45m of Japan patrol plane over Pacific, Tokyo says

TOKYO -- Chinese fighter jets flew abnormally close to a Japanese patrol plane monitoring a Chinese aircraft carrier in the Pacific Ocean twice within the past few days, Japan's Defense Ministry said Wednesday. A Maritime Self-Defense Force P-3C plane was followed by a Chinese J-15 from the aircraft carrier Shandong for around 40 minutes on Saturday and 80 minutes on Sunday, according to the ministry. The jet, believed to have been armed with missiles, flew within 45 meters of the patrol plane at the same altitude, a short enough distance to risk a collision.
