Gabin Kongolo: Film about dad's first Chelsea match goes on show

BBC News31-03-2025

A Welsh actor has produced a short film documenting his father's first time going to watch his football team play live.Gabin Kongolo's father Tony has supported Chelsea since 1990 and finally got to see them play in October when they drew 1-1 against Nottingham Forest at Stamford Bridge.Dear Dad is a cinepoem and pays tribute to Mr Kongolo's father, their relationship, life in Cardiff and their Congolese heritage. The Mr Loverman star told Radio Wales Breakfast: "I've always been inspired by poetry, we come from a country full of great poets, so it's embedded in me."
London-born Kongolo moved to Cardiff with his family when he was eight. He studied at the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama and has starred in TV series for the BBC and S4C. His parents came to Europe then the UK from the Democratic Republic of Congo and the journey plays an important part of the film. "In seven minutes I feel like I could cram everything I need to in this," Mr Kongolo said."And it's so important for me because I'm not just Welsh, I'm also Congolese and I'm also a black man. "And these are things I really wanted to embed in the story and I think me and my team did a pretty good job."
Despite being a fan for many years and watching matches with friends in Karibou Cafe in Cardiff, Tony had never made it to Stamford Bridge. "I think there's a lot of anxiety about going to stadiums," Mr Kongolo added."And also the club has a past that has dealt with a lot of racism, but they've made an effort to clear that up and initiatives like this help."They're quick to make statements when there's racism around the club. Also football matches are really expensive. "But it's amazing that he has his community here away from home."
Dear Dad was created as part of Chelsea Football Club's Blue Creator Fund, but Mr Kongolo is not a supporter himself."He upset me when I was a kid and that day Chelsea were playing Manchester United. So I said I was supporting Manchester. They won and since then that's my team."I couldn't lie, I told Chelsea I supported Manchester United and they said out of the short list of creators only one was actually a fan."Dear Dad has gone on display at the Saatchi Gallery in London, alongside a portrait of Tony, who got a sneak preview of the film before it went on show."The first thing he said to me was 'can I send it to my friends on WhatsApp?' I said 'that's all you've got from it dad?' But that's how I know he got joy from it."It's so nice to honour him in this way. As a creative it's hard to pay respect to your parents. "I got the perfect opportunity to do it through his football club."

Liam Neeson remembers ‘brilliant' Barbara Taylor Bradford in memorial message

The 73-year-old reflected on his role in TV drama A Woman Of Substance, adapted from one of the author's most well-known books, in the note that was read out on his behalf. Taylor Bradford died at the age of 91 on November 24 last year following a short illness, 'and was surrounded by loved ones to the very end', a spokeswoman said at the time. Actors, authors and other notable figures attended the service at St Bride's Church in Fleet Street, London, on Thursday. Neeson said in his message: 'In 1984, I had the great honour of playing Blackie O'Neill in the television adaptation of Barbara Taylor Bradford's A Woman Of Substance, and again in its sequel, Hold The Dream. 'It was a landmark moment — the first television drama series to reach more than 13.8 million viewers on Britain's Channel 4 — and something we were all incredibly proud of. 'But more than the numbers, it was Barbara's vision, her storytelling, and her fierce dedication to her characters that made the work so special. 'She was a force — elegant, brilliant and unstoppable — and I feel deeply privileged to have been part of bringing her words to life.' Human rights lawyer Cherie Blair, wife of former prime minister Sir Tony Blair, was also in attendance and reflected on her friendship with the author in a speech. 'I can hardly believe it's been over 20 years since I first met Barbara in New York,' she said. 'Tony and I were attending an event while he was UK Prime Minister. 'Although I can't recall the specifics of the event, I vividly remember meeting Barbara and, of course, her beloved husband, Bob (Robert Bradford). 'Meeting her was such a thrill — not only because I had read her books but also because she was a favourite author of both my mum and grandma. 'Barbara and I instantly connected as Northern girls who had ventured far from our roots, yet never forgot where we came from. 'At the time of our first meeting, Tony had not read any of Barbara's books, but he was so struck by her intelligence, elegance, and charm that he subsequently watched the TV show and read the book. 'Barbara and I stayed in touch, regularly meeting when I was in New York or when she was in London. 'One memory I treasure is attending the Women of Substance Awards with her at the Dorchester in London in 2009. 'The awards were so typical of Barbara — her unwavering support for other women was truly inspiring. She even offered me invaluable advice when I was establishing my own foundation for women. 'Barbara seemed ageless. Whenever we met, she was always engaged, well-informed, feisty and, of course, impeccably dressed. 'She was the epitome of a woman of substance — wise, fun and endlessly inspiring. We will deeply miss her warmth, wisdom and friendship.' The service began with the theme music from A Woman Of Substance and included an address from actress Jenny Seagrove, who played a young Emma Harte in the TV mini-series. In April it was announced that Vera actress Brenda Blethyn will lead a new Channel 4 adaptation of A Woman Of Substance, playing protagonist Emma. The book is a rags-to-riches tale set in the 1900s that follows the life of Yorkshire servant Emma who later heads up a business empire. Taylor Bradford was often labelled 'the grand dame of blockbusters', with her books selling more than 91 million copies and having been published in more than 40 languages and in 90 countries. Other TV adaptations of her books included ITV's Act Of Will starring Elizabeth Hurley and Victoria Tennant, and To Be The Best, a sequel to A Woman Of Substance with Lindsay Wagner and Sir Anthony Hopkins.

Abergavenny Boxing club could have a new venue soon

Abergavenny Boxing Club, formerly located at Hatherleigh Place, was forced to shut its doors back in September 2024 after a spree of arson attacks broke out across the South Wales area. The club was established in 2022 and interacted with at least a hundred members of the community. Since the fire it has been operating at A & J Future Fitness but may be starting afresh in a new venue. We are on the verge of agreeing a venue which would be sustainable for the long term and in a fantastic setting, for the boxers as well as the coaches. 'We will hope to reopen the other classes run previously too, and we will be looking to expand our outreach as a voluntary organisation.' Abergavenny Boxing Club owner and pro boxer 31-year-old Kieran Gething shared this latest development with the Argus. Speaking of the fire he said: 'It was one of the worst days I've had in a long time I was really emotional and I'm still quite sore that there's been no resolution. Hopefully we can get this venue. 'We were shocked when it happened there was no prosecution, but it was confirmed to be arson. We don't know who was behind it.' 31-year-old Kieran Gething of Abergavenny Boxing Club in the ring (Image: Kieran Gething) Despite still feeling upset about the previous venue Kieran's got big plans for the new one. He said: 'I'm a lead tutor in a Welsh education coaching programme, and I'm hoping to start a free provision for children under 16 and if successful classes of up to twenty. 'So, a completely free service to all under 16s in Monmouthshire, in association with a local institution.' Kieran said anyone interested in volunteering at the new club should get in touch via email at gething123@ or contact the club on social media.

In a change from last season the iconic Adidas stripes on the arms are black instead of white, as are the cuffs of the sleeves. For some the shirt is strikingly similar to last season, although the 2023/24 kit is perhaps a better comparison given that also bore black stripes. Adidas state the "home kits are crafted with the best of sporting technology, with AEROREADY materials that leave you feeling cool, dry, and comfortable on matchday, whether you're on the pitch or in the stands".
