Overdose deaths decrease nationwide, and here in the Upstate

SPARTANBURG COUNTY, S.C. (WSPA) – According to the Center for Disease Control (CDC), overdose deaths have decreased nationwide by almost 27% in the past year, and are projected to reach their lowest level since 2019. 'You realize you have a problem, you know true leadership is dealing with the problem and then putting the plan in place, and I believe that's probably what's happening nationwide,' said Spartanburg Co. coroner Rusty Clevenger. Clevenger's data showed overdose deaths in Spartanburg Co. skyrocketed during Covid. He said it was then that he and state officials knew they not only needed to track the deaths, but exactly where these drugs were coming from and which ones were the cause. 'We had to figure out where the hotspots were at so we could put you know, measures in place to try, whether it be education or whatever, and it seems to be working as well,' he said. Data showed Spartanburg County saw a marked decrease in overdose deaths in 2024. 'The numbers are holding steady about last year's levels, maybe a little bit less right now,' Clevenger explained. However Keith Blanton, the Pastor and Superintendent at Faith Home, a non-profit Christian recovery center, said beds in their facilities across the Upstate stay full. He told us between their four locations, there are 135 beds. 'I think more people are getting help,' said Blanton. 'I just do. I think that you know, Narcan is a good thing. It saves people's lives and as long as they're alive, you know there's a chance.' Blanton said thanks to the coroner's office and law enforcement agencies tracking 'hotspots' and providing education, drugs no longer have to be the end of every user's story. 'It's tough,' Blanton said. 'It's tough at first especially, but it gets easier, and it gets better. But if I had one thing to say, you do not have to live that way, there's a way out if you want out.' Blanton told 7NEWS over the years that the people they serve have become significantly younger. Algal bloom found in Anderson County lake: SCDES

ANDERSON COUNTY, S.C. (WSPA) — State environment officials issued a recreational watch after detecting a harmful algal bloom (HAB) in Broadway Lake on Wednesday. According to the South Carolina Department of Environmental Services (SCDES), samples were found to contain cyanobacteria, which can produce cyanotoxins like cylindrospermopsin and microcystins. HABS are common in the Palmetto States. They often occur during warmer and drier months, and can stick around for weeks. Cooler temperatures, heavy wind and rain can help break up and kill off the HAB. Blooms, officials added, look like green spilled paint or a bluish-green coloration to the water. State leaders said that people should not make direct contact with lake waters in areas where the HAB is present. Pets and animals should not swim or drink the lake water in impacted areas. Common symptoms associated with algae blooms include stomach pain, skin rash, headache, coughing and watery eyes. SCDES said that if a pet is showing symptoms after coming into contact with a HAB, please consult your veterinarian. Need more information? Contact the SCDES's Bureau of Water at (803) 898-8374. Ask the Expert: Is CBD oil safe and effective?

GREENVILLE, S.C. (WSPA)— Products containing CBD are growing in popularity and availability. As part of our 'Ask the Expert' series, in partnership with Bon Secours St. Francis, 7NEWS spoke with a family medicine physician about CBD oil and whether it's safe and effective. CBD oil is a product made from cannabidiol found in the cannabis plant, the same plant that produces marijuana, but doctors say it will not get you high. 'Unlike THC, which is tetrahydrocannabinol, a psychoactive compound in cannabis, CBD is non-psychoactive, meaning it does not cause a high sensation,' said Dr. Ryan Paulson. Family medicine physician Dr. Ryan Paulson said once CBD is extracted from the cannabis plant, it is usually diluted with a carrier oil such as coconut oil or hempseed oil before being used in most commercial products. He says doctors may recommend it for a variety of ailments. 'Common conditions where CBD oil can be recommended include chronic pain, anxiety, stress, sleep disorders, epilepsy or seizure disorders, inflammatory or autoimmune conditions such as Crohn's disease, ulcerative colitis, and skin conditions such as acne, eczema, or psoriasis,' said Dr. Ryan Paulson. Generally, Dr. Paulson says CBD oil is safe for most people when used appropriately, but it's not recommended for everyone. 'There are definitely individuals who should not be utilizing CBD oil or should be using it with great caution… it can interact with certain medications or underlying health conditions. 'We strongly urge that we avoid use with pregnant or breastfeeding women, as there is limited research on the safety of CBD during pregnancy and breastfeeding; in children under the age of 18; people with liver issues; and those on certain medications such as warfarin, antidepressants, and benzodiazepines,' said Dr. Ryan Paulson. Dr. Paulson says research on CBD oil is still evolving, and interactions with other treatments can vary. Therefore, consult your doctor before using these products. 'Your doctor can provide personalized guidance on proper dosage, potential interactions with other medications, and the best CBD products for your needs. That can also help you avoid any risk and ensure your overall treatment plan is effective and safe,' said Dr. Ryan Paulson. In some cases, a doctor may prescribe CBD oil as part of their treatment plan. 'Particularly for certain medical conditions where there's strong evidence for its effectiveness,' said Dr. Ryan Paulson. If you plan to purchase CBD oil over the counter, Dr. Paulson advises, ensure it's legitimate. 'To ensure you are purchasing a legitimate and safe CBD oil, you always want to look for third-party lab testing. Check the source and quality of the hemp and avoid brands that make unrealistic claims,' said Dr. Ryan Paulson. To submit a health topic for our 'Ask the Expert' series, click here.
