Indian steel PSUs expanding global presence to achieve higher production by 2030

Time of India5 hours ago

In a bid to explore reserves of key minerals needed for steel making abroad, and eyeing new markets for the commodity as well, three PSUs — Steel Authority of
India
Limited (SAIL),
National Mineral Development Corporation
(NMDC), and
Metallurgical and Engineering Consultants
(MECON) — will be opening their offices in Dubai by the end of June. Eventually, Nagpur-headquartered Manganese Ore India Limited (
MOIL
) will also join with a setup in the country, Union steel secretary
Sandeep Poundrik
told TOI on Sunday.
Even though there is enough domestic output of iron ore, the country needs to increase the supplies of coking coal, manganese, limestone, and even some of the critical minerals. The idea is to explore the reserves in other countries to meet the shortfall.
Poundrik
was in the city to attend the 63rd foundation day of MOIL on Sunday.
Manganese is needed for strengthening steel in its manufacturing process. Soon, MOIL chairman-cum-managing director (CMD) AJ
SAxena
will be visiting Gabon to explore the opportunities for manganese mining in the country. The govt is also eyeing critical minerals in Brazil and Argentina, said the officer.
Poundrik said Dubai has been chosen for opening the PSUs' office because a large part of the African market is controlled from there. Among Gulf countries, Oman has a sizeable quantity of limestone reserves, which again is a key input for steel making. With the availability of gas in the Middle-Eastern countries, the govt is also eyeing scope for DRI grade of steel from India, said the officer.
Poundrik said the country is currently making 151 million tonnes of steel, with around 9.5 million tonnes being imported. The country is a net importer at present because of China dumping the commodity. A safeguard duty has been imposed, and it is expected to yield results. However, by 2030, India's production is expected to reach 300 million tonnes, with the capacity reaching around 400 million tonnes, he said.
On the recent move of the European Union (EU) tightening restrictions on steel imports, Poundrik said India would take time to bring down the carbon imprint. EU nations have to follow the norms under the carbon border adjustment mechanism on this. With predominantly blast furnace technology in India, it would still take time to meet the EU norms. However, India is not much dependent on the EU, and there is a vast global market for its steel, he said.
MOIL achieves highest quarterly production
MOIL CMD Ajit
Kumar Saxena
said this quarter the company achieved the highest ever quarterly production at 5 lakh million tonnes in this fiscal. Never before could this level be reached. He was speaking at the company's foundation day function on Sunday. The company also undertook exploration of almost 107km in last fiscal. MOIL's production in the last fiscal stands at over 18 million tonnes, and it is confident of meeting the target of 35 million tonnes by 2030, he said.
Later, Poundrik said he was confident that MOIL's contribution to the steel sector would go beyond 50%. He said that MOIL's production is expected to even cross 35 million tonnes, touching over 40 million tonnes by 2030.

Nagastra-1R suicide drone: Check the features of this Made-in-India drone

The Indian Army has placed an order for 450 Nagastra-1R loitering munitions as part of its continued drive to enhance precision-strike capabilities and modernize its artillery and infantry support systems. Developed by Nagpur-based Solar Industries , the indigenous system represents a significant step toward self-reliance in next-generation tactical weaponry under the 'Make in India' initiative. 480 drones were ordered in 2024 Under the Indian Army's Emergency Procurement Powers, an order was placed with Solar Industries' Economic Explosives Ltd (EEL) for 480 Nagastra-1R loitering munitions. Following successful pre-delivery inspections, EEL delivered 120 units to an Army Ammunition Depot. "After successful completion of pre-delivery inspections, EEL delivered 120 Loiter Munitions to an Army Ammunition Depot," defence officials told ANI. Features of Nagastra-1 'Suicide Drone' The Nagastra-1 is a UAV-based loitering munition designed to act as an aerial ambush system. Its primary function is to hover above targets and execute precision strikes with GPS-enabled accuracy, achieving a remarkable precision of 2 meters. Precision Strike Capability: In "Kamikaze mode," Nagastra-1 can neutralize hostile threats by directly striking the target and destroying itself in the process. High Altitude Operation: The drone can fly at altitudes over 4,500 meters, making it difficult to detect by radar. Surveillance Equipment: It is equipped with day-night surveillance cameras and a warhead capable of defeating soft-skin targets. Endurance and Range: The fixed-wing electric UAV can operate for 60 minutes, with a man-in-loop control range of 15 kilometers and an autonomous mode range of 30 kilometers. Recovery Mechanism: The Nagastra-1 has an abort, recover, and reuse feature. If the target is not detected or the mission is aborted, it can be called back and safely landed using a parachute system, making it superior to similar systems developed by advanced countries. Strategic Advantages The Nagastra-1 drones are designed for precision strikes on enemy training camps, launch pads, and infiltrators, reducing the risk to soldiers. These man-portable drones are silent due to their electric propulsion and low acoustic signature, making them ideal for infantry operations. Live Events 'The drones are a cost-effective solution for targeting relatively lower-end threats, such as groups of infiltrating terrorists on the border. The drones also feature a parachute recovery mechanism, allowing them to be retrieved and reused in case of an aborted mission," as reported by Manu Pubby for ET. Indigenous Development and Cost Efficiency Developed entirely in India by EEL, Nagastra-1 boasts over 75% indigenous content, reducing reliance on foreign sources. This domestic production capability has resulted in significant cost savings compared to similar systems previously acquired from foreign vendors. The drones are capable of operating in extreme temperatures and high-altitude conditions, further enhancing their strategic value.

Coffee Board preps exporters to comply with EU deforestation rules

Talks are in progress with the EU on the bloc's Deforestation Regulation (EUDR) and Indian coffee exporters are preparing for the upcoming rules, an official said Thursday. India is working on a grower-registration model and collecting geo-location data for exporters to comply with the EUDR even though the country is categorised as a low-risk country. 'We are preparing the exporters. We are engaging with them so that there are no challenges,' said M Kurma Rao, CEO, Coffee Board. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Villa For Sale in Dubai Might Surprise You Villas in Dubai | Search ads Learn More Undo The Coffee Board has been doing polygon mapping which is mandatory for plots larger than four hectares wherein companies provide the geolocation points of the plots of land where the coffee comes in their due diligence statements. The EUDR requires firms to ensure that products exported to the EU have been grown on land which has not been deforested after December 31, 2020. Live Events The regulation has implications for India's coffee, cocoa, soya, wood products, rubber and its products and leather goods exports. It prescribes fines up to 4% of a firm's annual turnover in the EU and confiscation of products and revenues gained from a transaction for non-compliance. Exports push Led by value-added goods especially instant coffee, India's coffee exports rose 40.2% on-year in FY25 to $1.8 billion. India's coffee exports grew at a CAGR of 22.52% in the last five years. 'We export 70% of our production,' Rao said, adding that India is exporting coffee to over 120 countries. The share of value added coffee exports in the total coffee exports have increaoed to 38% during FY25 with Italy, Russia, the UAE, Germany and Turkey being the major coffee export destinations. Korea and members of the Gulf Cooperation Council are the new markets. The Coffee Board has developed the India Colfee App, a one stop solution to avail all the products, services and information of its stakeholders on real time basis. Efforts are also on to increase the area under coffee cultivation, officials said.
