Empowering Opportunity Youth To Dream Big And Prepare For Their Futures

Forbes06-05-2025

American Student Assistance (ASA) CEO Jean Eddy with award-winning artist, actor, author, and ... More activist Common American Student Assistance (ASA)
During this time of year when many young people are looking forward to their high school graduation and what comes next, it's important to remember that for some teens and young adults, thinking about and preparing for future success may seem like a luxury they cannot afford.
There is an urgent need to engage this population to activate their strengths and interests and dream big about their futures.
For this population of over five million opportunity youth who are neither working nor in school, and more than 700,000 justice-involved young people currently or formerly incarcerated, there is an urgent need to engage these underestimated youth to activate their strengths and interests and help them to dream big about their futures.
May 4-June 4 is National Returning Youth Month. It's imperative that we bring awareness to young people transitioning into society after incarceration, and ensuring they have the support and resources to successfully reintegrate is a critical step in this process.
For all these reasons and more, the national nonprofit American Student Assistance (ASA) partnered with FREE TO DREAM—a newly founded nonprofit by award-winning artist, actor, author, and activist Common—to launch the #IAMFREETODREAM campaign, providing tools and resources to help young people turn their dreams into reality.
Harnessing the Power of Dreams
While all young people need to be encouraged to dream big, this is critically important to underestimated youth who are facing challenges relevant to education, recidivism reduction, and reentry for those who are or were recently incarcerated.
That's why FREE TO DREAM is focused on harnessing the power of proximity, storytelling, and collaboration. We offer programs and pathways in creative arts & self-expression to activate the dreams of people from high potential communities. As Common puts it, 'We know dreams have the power to change life outcomes, yet so many people don't feel they even have permission to dream, or remember the dreams they once had. In some of the most difficult times in my life, it was holding on to my dreams that made the difference in my decisions, and ultimately those decisions made the difference in my life- that's how important it is. I know people who were incarcerated but held on to their dreams, and now they are home and living out those dreams and they are amazing examples of hope.'
Dreaming Big In Action
At ASA, we are on a mission to help all young people prepare for their futures, including those from rural areas, teens with disabilities, and young people who are opportunity youth. We need to find meaningful ways to help young people tap into their strengths and interests, explore, test and try, discover and transition into their dream careers. For all of us as caring adults or DREAMKEEPERS who support youth, we can start by asking a simple question of what do they love to do? What brings them joy? And as Common would say, what makes their eyes light up? Starting with kids' dreams and their highest aspirations, we can help them map out a successful future.
Another powerful way to create an environment where youth are encouraged to dream big about their futures, is through a process FREE TO DREAM calls "DREAMSCAPING." During national and regional activation events as part of the campaign, students were broken out into small groups led by adult facilitators. Young people worked through journaling prompts, brainstorming their own dreams and goals for the future. It was a chance for the kids to step back and think without limitation about where they wanted to go, how to get there, and who in their lives might be able to help them achieve their dreams. The facilitators encouraged the kids to share aloud and provided advice and guidance along the way.
Let us all, individually and collectively do all we can to ensure that all kids know they are not only free to dream, but have access to the environments, experiences, tools, and resources, critical in attaining those dreams. It starts with an adult who cares, who can help illuminate the path.

I shop for a living — trust me when I say these 9 new Lululemon bags will sell out

There's just something about a Lululemon bag — maybe it's the practicality, the trendiness or the way they somehow go with virtually everything. Each one I own has become a staple in my daily rotation. The retailer drops new styles and colours every week (very bad news for my wallet), and I'm always on the lookout for the next must-have. I'm happy to report that this week's new arrivals did not disappoint. Just in time for summer, I browsed all the latest bags, and these 11 instantly made my wish list. However, I'm trying to show some restraint, so I figured I'd share them with you instead. But I suggest acting fast because, as you know, the good ones don't hang around for long. Already know what you're looking for? You can check out the best new arrivals by category: Shop new Lululemon women's styles Shop new Lululemon men's styles Shop new Lululemon accessories Shop new Lululemon bags Lululemon new arrivals: Shop all This roomy tote is utterly chic and, honestly, this is the bag I'm having the hardest time resisting. It's made of a light-coloured canvas, and the chestnut brown trim gives off a "summer in the Hamptons" energy. It comes with a handy removable zippered pouch to keep your small essentials secure. The belt bag we all know and love is available in fun new summer colours. One standout is the "Citra Lime" shade. This vibrant lime green will add the perfect pop of colour to your warm-weather wardrobe and is sure to brighten up any casual outing. Lululemon is clearly having a moment with their canvas pieces — and quite frankly, so am I. I'm loving the elevated, high-end vibe they're leaning into, especially with the addition of gold hardware. This bag also comes with a detachable nano pouch, perfect for keeping earbuds or a bit of cash within reach. It's June — a.k.a. Pride Month — and this carry-all tote immediately caught my eye. It's roomy, casual and perfect for everything from beach days to running errands. What makes it special? It's adorned with Lululemon's "4ever Love" graphic, which is part of their Pride collection celebrating love and inclusion. Whether you're showing your support or just looking for a stylish tote, this one fits the bill either way. Continuing with the Pride collection, the beloved Everywhere Belt Bag is now available in a new pixelated rainbow print. It's a fun, vibrant twist that will literally go with everything, thanks to the full spectrum of colours. As always, it will hold all your essentials, making it the ultimate grab-and-go bag for errands, travel, concerts and everyday duties. How chic is this knit tote bag? I'm not going to lie, I might just have to add this one to my cart. It's spacious and trendy, and it even comes with a little pouch (similar to a designer tote). The knit material gives it a flexible yet substantial feel that'll definitely stand out from the rest of your bag collection. If the knit tote feels a bit too big but you love the look, I have good news for you: a smaller version is available! This one comes with a detachable crossbody strap, so you can go hands-free whenever you want. It's perfectly sized to carry your essentials (and then some), making it a great everyday bag. Now, if you're on the hunt for a versatile backpack that can be used for travelling, the office or school, this Everywhere Backpack is a great contender. Not only is it very roomy, but it also boasts an internal laptop sleeve, side water bottle pockets and a trolley sleeve to make things extra convenient. Here's another Pride collection piece — the bestselling Multi-Pocket Crossbody is available in a fun purple hue with an eye-catching Pride graphic. If you want more colour in your bag collection, this one's for you.

2025 Tony Awards: ‘Maybe Happy Ending' dominates with 6 wins, Nicole Scherzinger shocks with Best Actress win over Audra McDonald

Edge-of-seat drama. Stunning twists. Musical performances that brought down the house. The 2025 Tony Awards followed a script that any Broadway aficionado would appreciate. While the crowd-pleasing Maybe Happy Ending dominated the night with six wins — including Best Musical, Best Musical Actor (Darren Criss), Best Musical Director, Best Book of a Musical, Best Original Score, and Best Scenic Design for a Musical — there were some shocking moments. More from GoldDerby 'Every beat is meticulously crafted': An oral history of the Pulitzer Prize- and Tony-winning play 'Purpose' Paul Tazewell makes awards history again, becomes only 2nd costume designer to win Oscar and Tony in same year 'We need to be gayer than ever before': 'RuPaul's Drag Race' queens and producers get political at FYC pool party In one of the night's most highly anticipated matchups, Nicole Scherzinger took home the Tony Award for Best Actress in a Musical for her performance in Sunset Boulevard, edging out Broadway's most celebrated star, Audra McDonald. McDonald, earning her record-extending 11th nomination for her portrayal of Mama Rose in Gypsy, had been favored to win following her recent Drama Desk Award victory and surveys of Tony voters that showed her holding a narrow lead (likely due to the recent Patti LuPone controversy). In the other major surprise of the night, Purpose triumphed over Oh, Mary! to win Best Play, even though its director, Phylicia Rashad, was notably absent from the list of nominees. The Best Director of a Play award went to Sam Pinkleton for Oh, Mary!, which also picked up a win for its star, Cole Escola, who won Best Actor in a Play for their hilarious portrayal of Mary Todd Lincoln reimagined as a wannabe cabaret performer. Best Actress in a Play went to Sarah Snook for her Broadway debut in The Picture of Dorian Gray. She played 26 different characters in the production directed by Kip Williams. The Picture of Dorian Gray also prevailed for Best Costume Design earlier in the day. SEE 'Every beat is meticulously crafted': 6 'Purpose' Tony nominees offer an oral history of the Pulitzer Prize-winning drama Both Featured Actor winners were first-time nominees: Francis Jue, who won for his performance in the play Yellow Face, and Jak Malone, who took home the musical prize for Operation Mincemeat: A New Musical. The Tony for Best Featured Actress in a Play went to Kara Young for Purpose. This marks her fourth consecutive year as a nominee; she previously won in the same category last year for Purlie Victorious. Best Featured Actress in a Musical went to Natalie Venetia Belcon for Buena Vista Social Club, making her a first-time nominee and winner. Performances featuring many of this year's nominees also dazzled. Tony winner and three-time Oscar nominee Cynthia Erivo, who hosted the event from Radio City Music Hall in New York City, set the stage with a jaw-dropping performance of "Sometimes All You Need Is a Song" to open the festivies. The nominated productions sounded off, with Buena Vista Social Club, Dead Outlaw, Death Becomes Her, Floyd Collins, Gypsy, Maybe Happy Ending, Operation Mincemeat: A New Musical, Pirates! The Penzance Musical, Sunset Boulevard, Just in Time, and Real Women Have Curves all providing standout musical moments. And 10 years after it dominated the Tonys, Hamilton brought back its original cast and stole the show with a quick-fire "mixtape" of its greatest hits. The 78th Tonys aired live on CBS and streamed on Paramount+ with Showtime. Early winners were announced during the Tony Awards: Act One, hosted by Darren Criss and Renée Elise Goldsberry on Pluto TV.
