England stunned by Senegal to put Tuchel under immediate pressure

England slumped to a 3-1 home friendly defeat by Senegal on Tuesday to ramp up the scrutiny on boss Thomas Tuchel one year out from the World Cup. Goals from Ismaila Sarr, Habib Diarra and Cheikh Sabaly inflicted England's first ever defeat against African opposition at Nottingham Forest's City Ground after Harry Kane had given the hosts an early lead. Tuchel was scathing in his criticism of his side's dreary display in beating minnows Andorra just 1-0 in World Cup qualifying on Saturday. The German, who was appointed with the task of ending England's wait since 1966 for a major tournament win, suffered his first defeat in four games in charge. "We need to see the players under these kinds of conditions against one of the top 20 teams in the world to be smarter," said Tuchel. "We don't go next week to the World Cup. We go in one year." Tuchel responded by making 10 changes, with Kane the only player to retain his place. It took just seven minutes for the Bayern Munich striker to maintain his record of scoring in every game since Tuchel took charge. Former Chelsea goalkeeper Edouard Mendy should have done better when he could only parry Anthony Gordon's shot into the path of Kane, who tapped in his 73rd international goal. Dean Henderson was given a rare chance to impress in the England goal as Jordan Pickford was relegated to the bench. The Crystal Palace stopper made impressive saves from his club team-mate Sarr and Idrissa Gana Gueye. But he was helpless when Sarr made the most of a lack of concentration from Kyle Walker to meet Nicolas Jackson's cross and fire into the bottom corner. England had never lost to African opposition in 21 previous matches but Senegal had been beaten just once from open play since losing to the Three Lions at the 2022 World Cup. "Not good enough. We had moments, but with and without the ball things aren't clicking, we're not finding the right tempo," said Kane. "We've lost that aggressive nature that we had." Diarra was afforded acres of room to run in behind the England defence and slot between the legs of Henderson to put the visitors in front just after the hour mark. Mendy made amends for his role in the opening goal with fine saves to deny Bukayo Saka and Morgan Gibbs-White a swift equaliser. England thought they had levelled late on when Jude Bellingham smashed home from a corner. But the goal was ruled out for a handball by Levi Colwill before the ball broke to the Real Madrid midfielder. Senegal made the most of that reprieve to seal a famous win in stoppage time when Sabaly rounded off a slick counter-attack. Boos rained down from the disgruntled home support to leave Tuchel with plenty to ponder before England are next in action in September.

Teen schoolgirl awestruck after winning unexpected Australian title

An emotional 16-year-old schoolgirl is being hailed as the future of Australian swimming after earning world championship selection. Sienna Toohey left seasoned campaigners including Kaylee McKeown and Cate Campbell in awe with a stunning swim at Australia's selection trials in Adelaide on Tuesday night. The Albury teen, who only started swimming because she wanted to play water polo, triumphed in the women's 100m breaststroke. Toohey's victory, in a personal best time of one minute 6.55 seconds, secured her berth at the world titles in Singapore from July 27 to August 3. 'All of these people being my idols, now I get to be on the team with them,' Toohey said. 'These are people that I was watching two years ago, saying I want to be like them.' The daughter of the relieving principal at Albury High School, Toohey initially wanted to be a water polo player. 'My parents told me that I couldn't do water polo if I didn't swim, so I started swimming,' she said. 'And then my water polo progressed and my swimming was too at the same time. I got to the point where I had to choose swimming or water polo. Obviously, I chose swimming — it was the right choice.' Cate Campbell comforts Sienna Toohey after the awesome feat. 'I was 16 when I made my first team and it really taught me a lot being with the older guys,' McKeown said after winning the 100m backstroke final on Tuesday night. 'I'm excited to see young swimmers coming through the ranks. 'The more experience that they can get leading into LA (the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics), we have a really good chance of doing Australia proud.' McKeown, who has told of the mental toll during her decorated career, offered some advice to the precocious Toohey. 'Just to enjoy yourself,' McKeown said. 'The more you be serious, the more you're harsh on yourself, you keep just digging yourself in a bit of a hole and it's quite hard to get out of.' For Toohey, she now will revise plans which had centred on the goal of swimming at the 2032 Brisbane Olympics. 'The team I was first aiming to get on was definitely that one,' she said. 'Now that I've made this one, we'll have to push up the timeline a bit more.' Also on Tuesday night, Alex Perkins threatened the national women's 50m butterfly record by clocking 25.36 seconds, 0.05 shy of Holly Barratt's benchmark set six years ago. Injury-plagued Ed Sommerville, 20, made his first senior long-course national team by winning the men's 200m freestyle in 1:44.93 ahead of Sam Short (1:45.71). Joshua Edwards-Smith prevailed in the men's 100m backstroke in 54.28 and and Matt Temple took out the men's 100m butterfly in 51.00.

Nick Kyrgios axed for Wimbledon as sad reality sets in

Nick Kyrgios has been axed by the BBC. Reports first landed on Wednesday morning the Australian tennis star has been told his services will not be required when the network begins its coverage of Wimbledon, beginning June 30. It comes after his appointment to the broadcaster's team for the event last year sparked uproar. In another body blow, The Telegraph reports Kyrgios will also not appear during ESPN's coverage of the tournament, despite working with the American broadcaster during the Australian Open in 2024 and 2025. It has been a brutal few weeks for the 30-year-old after he was last month forced to pull out of his plans to play doubles with partner Jordan Thompson at the French Open. Citing a recently flared up knee injury, Kyrgios was forced to pull out on the eve of the event and he last week confirmed he will not play at Wimbledon this year because of injuries. The Telegraph reports a person close to the former world No. 13 has explained Kyrgios' absence from the BBC by pointing out that unlike last year, Kyrgios had hopes of playing the prestigious tournament this year. Kyrgios divided opinions with his BBC commentary last year with many viewers impressed by his analysis and flare. However, others were affronted with his casual commentary and bold fashion displays at the All England Club. There was a much more serious issue Kyrgios faced at the start of the tournament after the BBC faced a backlash for hiring him. His appointment by the BBC last year was met with criticism by senior politicians and violence against women organisations. Kyrgios pleaded guilty to assaulting former girlfriend Chiara Passari in 2021, however those charges were dismissed. UK member of parliament Caroline Nokes, the women and equalities committee chair, last year said the BBC should 'hang its head in shame' for hiring Kyrgios. Nokes said last year: 'It's a disgrace and shows the utter contempt our national broadcaster has towards women. 'Not content with consistently underpaying their own female staff and forcing out women once they hit a certain age, they now bring a man who admitted assaulting a woman on board for Wimbledon.' A BBC statement at the time said: 'We are in no way condoning his cited previous actions or behaviours, on and off the court, and he is employed to share his views on tennis only. 'He has provided similar services to other major sports broadcasters in recent months. 'The legal process he was involved in has concluded, is well documented, and he has spoken about it publicly.' Kyrgios has not played the event since his run through to the final in 2022 where he lost to Novak Djokovic. Taking to Instagram last week, he said: 'Just wanted to give everyone a quick update – I've hit a small setback in my recovery and unfortunately won't make it back for grass season this year. 'I know how much you've all been looking forward to seeing me out there, and I'm genuinely sorry to disappoint. 'This is just a bump in the road though, and I'm already working hard to get back stronger than ever. 'Thank you for all your continued support – it means everything to me. See you soon!' The former couple erased each other from their social media accounts and Hatzi last month said they no longer talk. Kyrgios, who has been troubled by serious wrist and knee injuries, had been due to make his return to Paris for the first time since 2017 to partner Thompson. Kyrgios has not won a grand slam singles match since 2022.
