American aviation student vanishes in New Zealand; Mother joins search as investigators urge public's help

Time of India5 hours ago

Twenty-four-year-old
William Henry
'Will'
Johnson
, an American studying aviation at
Massey University
, has been missing in
New Zealand
for at least nine days, leaving family and friends deeply concerned.
Johnson was last seen between May 30 and June 1 in the Takaro area of Palmerston North, where he lived in a shared flat. His family received a single text on June 5, but since then, there's been no response to calls or messages. That silence, they say, is completely unlike him.
'William's disappearance is completely out of character. This is a young man who maintained regular contact with his family,' said private investigator Mike Gillam, leading the probe via his agency, The Investigators New Zealand.

Gillam, alongside former police officers, is conducting searches not only around Palmerston North but also in Auckland—a city Johnson was known to visit spontaneously. His 2013 silver Mazda 6 (registration MJK496) is also missing and considered a critical lead.
Johnson's mother has flown in from the US, joining authorities on the ground. Gillam notes that Johnson was generally reliable and communicative, a trait that makes his abrupt silence all the more alarming.
Live Events
Police have assigned the case number P062813346, and although their public updates are minimal, Gillam confirms they are working in coordination.
Friends describe Johnson as punctual, thoughtful, and socially engaged. One flatmate remarked,
'
He'd always tell us where he was going, even if it was just to get coffee.'
Residents and commuters in Takaro and along common routes to Auckland are urged to stay alert. Anyone spotting Johnson or his Mazda 6 should contact the
New Zealand Police
with the reference number above or reach out to Gillam directly at 027 299 7603.

Honeymoon murder: Meghalaya minister seeks apology from Raj & Sonam's kin for 'tarnishing state's image', warns of defamation case

SHILLONG: Following the arrest of Sonam Raghuvanshi and four others in connection with the murder of her husband, Raja Raghuvanshi, during their honeymoon in Meghalaya, the state's political leadership has hit back at earlier allegations that painted Meghalaya in a poor light. Meghalaya minister Alexander Laloo Hek said the families of Raja and Sonam owe an apology for remarks that, he claimed, tarnished the reputation of the state and its people. He also stated that if they don't apologise to the people of Meghalaya, a defamation case will be filed against them. "Now we are seeking an apology from the families of Raja and Sonam Raghuvanshi for tarnishing the image of Meghalaya and its people," Hek added. "The people of Meghalaya demand an apology; otherwise, we will file a defamation case against them,' Hek warned. Hek also praised the swift and efficient action taken by Meghalaya Police. 'We are thankful to the Meghalaya Police for their crackdown and complete investigation within seven days,' Hek said. He also confirmed that Sonam Raghuvanshi will be brought back to Shillong as the investigation progresses further. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like 5 Books Warren Buffett Wants You to Read In 2025 Blinkist: Warren Buffett's Reading List Undo The statement comes amid widespread public and media attention on the murder case, which unfolded during the couple's honeymoon in Meghalaya. 'She told me to withdraw complaint': Chennai woman inspector transferred after mishandling sexual assault complaints

CHENNAI: The Inspector of the Tirumangalam All Women Police Station was transferred and placed on a waiting list following serious allegations of mishandling sexual assault complaints and favouring accused individuals, prompting criticism from the public. The controversy began when a 38-year-old woman, residing on the first floor of an apartment in the Nolambur police station limits, lodged a complaint against a neighbour who allegedly attempted to rape her. The accused, identified as Mukesh (29), lived on the third floor of the same building. According to the victim, Mukesh, in an inebriated state, forcibly entered her home on the night of May 29 while she was alone and attempted to sexually assault her. When she resisted, he allegedly stabbed her in the neck and back. The woman sustained serious injuries and was treated at the Kilpauk Govt Hospital, where she received eight stitches. Following the incident, the victim approached the Tirumangalam All Women Police Station to file a complaint. However, the police allegedly delayed registering the case. Following pressure from women officers in the department, a case was eventually filed. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like 5 Books Warren Buffett Wants You to Read In 2025 Blinkist: Warren Buffett's Reading List Undo Mukesh, who absconded after the incident, later surrendered at the Ambattur Court. He was taken into custody, interrogated for a day, and then remanded to judicial custody. Despite the arrest, there were strong allegations that the investigating officers showed leniency towards the accused and failed to conduct a thorough investigation. In a separate case, another woman, a 42-year-old in Tirumangalam, filed a sexual harassment complaint at the same police station three days ago. In her complaint, she alleged that a senior officer at her workplace harassed her on a daily basis. She claimed that after reporting the harassment internally, she was transferred first to Kalambakkam and later to Nagapattinam. When she protested, the officer reportedly agreed to her request to stop the harassment, but the behaviour persisted. The woman further alleged that when she filed a formal complaint with the Tirumangalam All Women Police Station, the Inspector in charge threatened her and pressured her to withdraw the complaint. The woman subsequently approached the City Police Commissioner's office seeking justice. Following these back-to-back allegations, senior police officials launched an internal review. Based on multiple complaints that the Tirumangalam All Women Police Station failed to act impartially and was seen as protecting the accused in sensitive cases involving women, Inspector Vijayalakshmi was transferred and placed on a waiting list.

Bengaluru stampede: No interim relief for RCB exec Nikhil Sosale, Karnataka HC reserves judgment till June 11

The Karnataka High Court on Tuesday reserved its order till June 11 on a plea filed by Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) marketing executive Nikhil Sosale , who sought interim relief in connection with the stampede incident at the city's Chinnaswamy Stadium that claimed 11 lives on June 4. The stampede occurred during a public event organized to celebrate RCB's maiden Indian Premier League (IPL) title. A massive crowd had gathered at the venue, leading to a stampede-like situation. Several individuals sustained injuries as the authorities struggled to control the turnout. Sosale, a member of the RCB management team, approached the High Court seeking anticipatory bail and interim protection from coercive action after a FIR registered against the franchise, the event organisers and Karnataka State Cricket Association (KSCA) under charges related to negligence and public endangerment. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like New Container Houses Vietnam (Prices May Surprise You) Container House | Search ads Search Now Earlier last week, the HC granted protection from arrest to the KSCA office bearers in connection with the stampede case. Justice SR Krishna Kumar, while granting interim relief to KSCA office bearers, president Raghuram Bhat, secretary A Shankar and treasurer ES Jairam, asked them to cooperate with the police investigations. The court had asked the government and the police not to take any coercive action against the office-bearers till the next date of the hearing, which is now scheduled for June 12. Live Events The KSCA management swiftly moved the high court last week after chief minister Siddaramaiah ordered the arrest of its office bearers along with the senior executives of RCB Bengaluru and DNA Entertainment Networks charging them with culpable homicide not amounting to murder and other sections under Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita. Their petition prayed for the quashing of the FIR holding KSCA management accountable for the deaths and injuries to RCB fans.
