What Do I Wear to a Spring Outing With Co-Workers?

New York Times21-04-2025

The spring or summer office outing is the warm-weather equivalent of the end-of-the-year office holiday party: a purportedly 'fun' affair that actually causes all sorts of extra stress and worry. What to wear is a key part of that, not because it's a frivolous consideration, but because it is core.
After all, you have crafted your work identity in one environment, and now you are being forced to translate that to another. The first thing your colleagues will be looking at (literally) is how you show up.
And though the question of dress at the holiday party is complicated, the question of dress at the supposedly relaxed outing is even worse.
Once, for example, in a previous job, I was organizing a conference in Las Vegas at a fancy hotel, which involved live interviews with a lot of chief executives of companies I was covering. I arrived the day before, unpacked, changed and headed off to the pool — only to discover, to my horror, all of those executives lounging around in their trunks or bikinis on various deck chairs or wading around the shallow end.
I promptly fled back to my room and emerged only when I had to get onstage. In a suit. My relationships with those executives, and our carefully cultivated balance of power, did not involve anyone seeing anyone in a bathing suit.
So what to do? You don't want to wear exactly the same thing you would wear in the office to the office outing; the whole point of such experiences is to show colleagues in a different light. But you also don't want to look too different — unless, of course, your role in the company is to think out of the box. Then looking out of the box is fully consistent with your position.
Otherwise you have to wear something in which you can move, even potentially golf, while simultaneously not getting too hot or too dirty and looking somewhat professional at the same time.
Easy peasy!
Not. A friend who has worked at both gigantic global corporations and Silicon Valley start-ups said: 'There's a little code-switching involved. You want to look crisp and cool, but not too revealing,' either of body or, perhaps, personal idiosyncrasies. Leave the sports bras and neons at home; ditto any 'Happy Gilmore' fantasies you may secretly harbor.
This is a moment to play the game, in all meanings of that term. At least if you don't want to call in sick or surprise everyone by revealing your secret penchant for German heavy metal. That's not to say you can't surprise everyone with your authentic self at the company outing — but if you do, be prepared to be the main topic of conversation the next day. If you are not, then opt for another kind of costume.
Kathryn Minshew, a founder of The Muse, a career resources website, and an author of 'The New Rules of Work,' said that for men, the choice is pretty simple — slacks and a casual button-up or polo shirt. For women, she suggested opting for work-adjacent clothing like a pair of cotton or linen pants or a linen skirt, but in a sunny color. Wear them with a blouse, or even a white T-shirt. The 'casual' can come in the accessories: sneakers or Birks, a pair of cool shades, a fun belt.
The point being, even if the word is in the dress code, when it comes to work outings, there's nothing really 'casual' about them.

Aldi national expansion includes first Delafield store, which opens June 19

Aldi, the German discount grocer known for creating its own brands of popular processed foods, will open its first Delafield store, and only its third in Lake Country, on June 19. The company recently completed the remodeling of the former OfficeMax store at 2840 Heritage Drive, just east of state Highway 83 along the south side of the Interstate 94 corridor. It's only the second new store planned for Wisconsin in 2025, but one in more than 800 in the works in the U.S. through 2028 including a record-setting 225 stores expected to open this year alone. All rely on shoppers looking to save a few dollars, even in upscale suburban places, according to Aldi officials. Shane Williams, Aldi's regional vice president, cited an Aldi Price Leadership Report that claims Aldi shoppers save 36% on their shopping lists, averaging $4,000 annually. "As shoppers look for better ways to stretch their dollar, Aldi is providing Delafield with easier access to quality groceries at affordable prices," Williams said in a news release announcing the June 19 opening date. Company officials noted that Aldi's exclusive brands make up about 90% of the items in its stores. In addition to processed foods, such as Millville cereals that include Fruit Rounds (akin to Kellogg's Froot Loops), stores also sell organic meats, fresh produce and sustainable seafood. Their cheese and wine selections include a house wine called Winking Owl. Shoppers will find limited-time offers on seasonal foods, home goods and other items. The company also promotes its "sustainability" in product lines, which it says are important to its core shoppers, and offers gluten-free options. In addition to standard offers, the Delafield store, which will be open daily from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m., will include a June 19 promotion for the first 100 customers. Each will receive a gift bag containing exclusive product samples, a gift card and promotion materials. Aldi also has two stores in Waukesha and one store each in Brookfield, Mukwonago, Muskego, Oconomowoc and Pewaukee, along with others in the Milwaukee area. In the sequel, Gilmore needs to raise $300,000 for his daughter's (played by real life daughter Sunny Sandler) ballet school tuition, so he decides to take another swing at golf for the tournament cash. Hungarian Supreme Court rules in favour of married same-sex couple

The marriage of same-sex couples tying the knot abroad must be acknowledged in Hungary as a registered partnership, the Supreme Court ruled on Wednesday. The Budapest-based court gave parliament until October 31 this year to entrench the provision in law. It was responding to legal action brought by a Hungarian-German same-sex couple who had married in Germany. While same-sex marriage is not permitted in Hungary, the option of a registered partnership was introduced in 2009. In addition, a 2016 government regulation provided for same-sex marriages concluded abroad to be recognized as registered partnerships in Hungary. This provision has not been implemented, as the appropriate legislation has not been passed. The Supreme Court has now decided that this failure is anti-constitutional, ruling that the protection and recognition of same-sex relationships are part of human dignity and the right to self-determination. Prime Minister Viktor Orbán's Fidesz party, which has been in power since 2010, seeks to restrict the rights of people who are not heterosexual. In the spring, parliament, where the conservative nationalist Fidesz holds a majority, created the basis for banning the annual Pride Parade celebrating the rights of lesbian, gay, bisexual and trans people plus the wider queer community LGBT+ through changes to the law and the constitution. Fidesz cites the need for protecting children as the grounds for the changes. Budapest's Pride Parade has been scheduled for Saturday June 28, but whether it will take place is not yet clear, with talks proceeding between police, the government and Budapest's liberal city council. Justice Minister Bence Tuzson has proposed the city's horseracing track as a venue, as access can be restricted. The proposal drew a response from Budapest Mayor Gergely Karácsony. "I would like to inform the justice minister that the people demonstrating for freedom and love are people, and not horses," Karácsony said.
