WNBA legend Diana Taurasi announces retirement

NBC News25-02-2025

Three-time WNBA champion and two-time WNBA Finals MVP Diana Taurasi announced her retirement from professional basketball Tuesday.
Taurasi, 42, played 20 years in the WNBA, spending every season of her career with the Phoenix Mercury.
'Mentally and physically, I'm just full,' Taurasi told TIME. 'That's probably the best way I can describe it. I'm full and I'm happy.'
'Diana Taurasi is one of the greatest competitors to ever play the game of basketball on any stage,' WNBA commissioner Cathy Engelbert said in a statement. 'In a record-setting career that saw her play 20 seasons, score more points and make more 3-point shots than any player in WNBA history, she earned the unquestioned respect of players around the globe, delivered electrifying moments and captivated fans again and again.'
Taurasi was the No. 1 overall pick in the 2004 WNBA draft after an incredibly accomplished collegiate career with the Connecticut Huskies. Taurasi was a three-time NCAA champion and two-time NCAA tournament Most Outstanding Player before entering the professional ranks.
In her fourth season with the Mercury, Taurasi averaged 19.9 points per game in the postseason as she helped lead Phoenix to its first WNBA championship. She led the team to two more championships in 2009 and 2014, winning Finals MVP each time.
One of the game's best offensive players, Tuarasi retires as the WNBA's all-time leader in several scoring categories, including points, field goals made, free throws made, and 3-pointers made.
In addition to her WNBA career, Taurasi played several seasons overseas, winning six EuroLeague championships, seven Russian National League championships and a Turkish National League championship.
As a member of the U.S. women's national basketball team, Taurasi won six consecutive gold medals in Olympic play. She never lost a game during the Olympics in her time representing her country.
'My scoring record or the six gold medals, someone's going to come around that has the same hunger, the same addiction to basketball, and put those records in a different way, a different name,' Taurasi told TIME. 'That's what sports is all about. That's going to be fun to watch. Hopefully not soon.'

Aces' A'ja Wilson exits in third quarter with head injury

June 12 - Three-time WNBA MVP A'ja Wilson left the Las Vegas Aces' game against the Los Angeles Sparks on Wednesday night with a head injury. Aces coach Becky Hammon said postgame that Wilson would see a doctor on Thursday, with the star's status uncertain until then. Wilson took herself out of the game with 1:17 left in the third quarter and immediately put a towel on her nose. She left the bench area a short time later and was ruled out early in the fourth quarter. Wilson took a blow to the nose earlier in the game, and gauze was put into her nose to stop the bleeding. "I think she got elbowed by (Dearica) Hamby," Hammon said. "I know she was bleeding. And I know she couldn't come back." Wilson missed a jumper shortly before leaving the game. She had 13 points but shot just 2-for-12 from the field. Wilson also had eight rebounds, five assists and four blocked shots in the Aces' 97-89 loss. --Field Level Media

Wings rookie Paige Bueckers puts up 35 in return to action

June 12 - Dallas rookie standout Paige Bueckers returned from a four-game absence on Wednesday and put up a career-high 35 points in the Wings' 93-80 road loss to the Phoenix Mercury. Bueckers missed three games due to a concussion and another because of an illness. She came back to make 13 of 19 shots from the floor, including 5 of 7 from 3-point range, while adding six rebounds and four assists. Her 22 first-half points topped her previous high for a game, 21. Bueckers was the No. 1 overall pick in the 2025 WNBA Draft after being a college star at UConn, where she was a three-time first-team All-American and also won one national championship (2025) and one national player of the year honor (2021). She was averaging 14.7 points, 6.7 assists and 4.5 rebounds in six games for Dallas before getting hurt. Before Wednesday, Bueckers last played on May 29 when the Wings lost 97-92 to the Chicago Sky. She had 15 points, eight assists, five rebounds, three steals and three blocked shots. Dallas has a 1-10 record, which ranks last in the 13-team league. --Field Level Media
