India reported 276 new COVID-19 cases and seven deaths in the past 24 hours, bringing the total number of active cases to 4,302 and the overall death toll to 44.
At least 276 Covid-19 cases were reported in India during the last 24 hours, taking the total number of active Covid-19 cases to 4,302, with Kerala accounting for the highest number of infections at 1,373. Maharashtra has logged 510 cases, Gujarat 461 and West Bengal 432.
The national capital has recorded at least 457 Covid-19 infections. A total of 44 Covid-related deaths have been reported in the country so far, the highest being in Maharashtra with 14 fatalities.
At least seven deaths were reported in the last 24 hours, with Maharashtra accounting for four of them. Gujarat and Delhi also reported one Covid-related death in this time period.
Five deaths have been reported in Delhi, while Kerala logged 9 fatalities. Four deaths were reported each in Tamil Nadu and Karnataka. So far, Arunachal Pradesh remains the only state which has not reported a single Covid-19 case so far.

6 new Covid-19 cases in Nellore puts officials on high alert
Tirupati: The medical and health department is on a high alert following a sudden spike in Covid-19 cases in Nellore district. About six new Covid-19 cases were reported in the district, prompting the health department to enhance precautionary measures and hospital preparedness. Two nursing students, who came from Kerala and exhibited symptoms of cold, cough and fever, tested Covid positive on Thursday and were admitted to a local hospital. Four others from different parts of Nellore district, including a 65-year-old patient, also tested positive for Covid-19. All six patients were treated initially and then discharged with strict instructions to remain in home isolation until fully recovered. District medical and health officer Dr V Sujatha confirmed the cases and said, "Precautions have been communicated to the patients, and we are monitoring the situation closely." A special 30-bed Covid ward has been set up in the pulmonology department, each bed equipped with a ventilator. Rapid antigen and RT-PCR testing kits are available for quick diagnosis. Health Minister urges vulnerable groups to wear mask amid COVID-19 spike
Though there is no need to panic over the rise in COVID-19 cases in the country, it is advisable for the elderly, people with comorbidities and pregnant women to wear masks in public places, said Health Minister Ma. Subramanian in Perundurai on Friday. The Minister, along with Minister for Housing, Prohibition, and Excise S. Muthusamy, Collector Raja Gopal Sunkara, Rajya Sabha MP Anthiyur P. Selvaraj, MPs K. Subbarayan (Tiruppur) and K.E. Prakash (Erode), and MLAs A.G. Venkatachalam and V.C. Chandhirakumar, distributed certificates to students during the 27th Graduation Day at the Government Erode Medical College and Hospital in Perundurai. He also inaugurated new hospital buildings and laid the foundation stone for additional facilities worth ₹16 crore in the district. Addressing the media, Mr. Subramanian said that while the Union Health Ministry typically issues advisories to all the State governments during a spike in cases, no such advisory has been issued, so far. He said the symptoms of the current Omicron variant include fever, throat pain, and cough. 'If symptoms persist, individuals should visit the nearest government hospital for treatment,' he advised. The Minister said 94,000 hospital beds have been kept ready across Tamil Nadu for treating COVID-19 patients, and the State's infrastructure has been upgraded to store up to 3,000 metric tonnes of oxygen. Responding to a question on the misuse of certain painkillers and sedatives as drug substitutes, he said the matter would be taken up with the Union government for necessary action. On the issue of gutka smuggling, he noted that despite the ban in Tamil Nadu, the product is being brought in from Karnataka and called for coordinated efforts to curb the menace.

Maharashtra reports 114 new COVID-19 cases; one more patient dies
As many as 114 new COVID-19 cases were reported in Maharashtra, taking the count to 1,276 since January this year, while one more patient succumbed to the infection, pushing up the toll to 18, the state health department said on Friday. Of these cases, 44 were detected in Pune (42 in civic limits in two in rural areas), 37 in Mumbai and seven each in Mira Bhayandar and Panvel Municipal Corporation areas. They were followed by civic areas of Navi Mumbai (4), Pimpri-Chinchwad (6), Kalyan (3), Thane, Satara, Kolhapur, Sangli, Chatrapati Sambhajinagar and Parbhani (one case each), a health department statement said. The department has conducted 15,510 COVID-19 tests since January, of which 1,276 were reported positive, it said.
